Well that's annoying. Seems like an example of Apple throwing a fit when a company makes a product to correct a potentially fatal problem with their devices (fragile screens).

It would be strange if the durability of the screen was some kind of "fatal problem": its not. The screens are incredibly tough. The bezel and back of my 3G certainly looks well used - plenty of scratches - but not a single noticable scratch on the screen.

you can still buy them, just not in Apple Stores.

Apple is not going to sell or stand behind a product that puts an extra layer between the finger and the screen. Apple did not intend for their devices to have protective screens, nor did they intend for them to be used with protective screens.

Apple device screens are among the most durable and scratch-resistant you'll ever find. There's no actual need for any screen protection.

As for the ban, screen protection kind of defeats the purpose of oleophobic coatings, and does send the message that Apple's screens are in need of protection.

I've stopped using plastic screen protectors for my iPhone long ago, preferring a nice, thin, plastic/transparent backing. Works great.
Further, you can get your screen protectors elsewhere, just not in Apple Stores. No big deal.

Whats up with all the negatives. This is a good thing. Those screen "protectors" were always gimmicks. Get the Snake Oil out of the Apple Store already!

My wife insisted that I install an Invisishield screen protector on her iPhone when we got them. She's had it off for a while now. The screen is made of Glass and is pretty durable. The protector did nothing but hamper the multi-touch and distort the image because of it's texture. The fact that we paid what we did for a piece of plastic really makes me believe that we were ripped off big time. Good for Apple to stand up for their customers. I've never had a screen protector on my iPhone or my old iPod Touch and neither has anything other than some microscopic little scratches that you never see unless the screen is off ad you're holding it at an angle.

Good job Apple, I commend you. These things are a huge waste of money and totally make the experience of using an iphone just like all the rest of the crap phones out there (WM, BB, android, etc) that use touchscreen.

I like this move.

Fragile screens? I have never once had a screen protector on my 3GS nor did I on my 3G. I did on my 2G but then realized it wasn't necessary and removed it. My brother uses one and I just don't see the point. The screen protector takes away from the overall performance of the touch screen imo. My wife doesn't use one either and she tosses her phone into her purse and the screen is still perfect.

Well i've had both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.
When i got my new 3GS i noted that the whole phone, but especially the screen is much more scratch-proofer than the 3G. It's also more fingerprint-resistant than the 3G. I've had my 3GS now for about 3 month and its completely scratch-proof. I used both Zagg invisible Shield and a Marware cover on my 3G, but found it unnecessary on my 3GS.

So well my guess is that Apple tried getting rid of all those screen protecters and bulky cases by making the iPhone more scratch-proof, and that they now makes another move against those screen protecters and bulky cases - which does remove the nice feel of design and quality of the iPhone.

I use the anti-glare screen protectors because they almost eliminate fingerprint smudges. Excuse me but...**** YOU APPLE !!! If I want to put a screen protector on my phone, so be it. WTF? Hell I'm a fanboy and this just irks me. I hope Google's Nexus 1 gets better and kicks the **** out of iPhone sales. SJ is starting to be one helluva Primadonna.

They're not "denying" anything. They're just removing them from the Apple stores. You can still buy them.

If something is sold in an Apple store, that tends to give it an imprimatur of approval from Apple. For whatever reason, Apple doesn't want to appear to endorse these protectors. It seems silly to me, but, OTOH, I'm not a $40 billion company.
Your points make sense to me - I can see how by merely selling the protectors, Apple was giving an implicit endorsement of their use and function.

I don't think it's a big deal. I don't know of anyone who uses a screen protector anyway. If you really wanted one, just go to the 16 different kiosk's outside an apple store and buy from them.

Not to mention, if you did go to town on the screen with a diamond studded blade, you could have the glass replaced.

I don't like using the device with a screen protector, anyway. If it was a necessity I wouldn't buy the device to begin with.

There seems to be a lot of people claiming that the iPhone doesn't require a screen protector to prevent scratches.
A word of advice - if you ever plan to resell your phone - bear in mind that the resale value is entirely dependent on the number of scratches, scuffs and hairline cracks.
Apply a screen protector and a case from day one. Be gentle when connecting the cable to the dock port - most phones develop hairline cracks in the back cover. Fact.
Some people will always say that anything Apple make is perfect and any decision Apple take is impervious to criticism. Ignore them.

Every retailer chooses what to stock and what not to stock!

Apple don't sell groceries in their stores. :(

I think it's disgraceful the way Apple try to control what we eat.

I'm slowly starving to death.

Why would they do this?!

Best thing about buying a screen protector is actually seeing in it store, same with cases.

What is there to see? It is a screen size piece of cheap plastic.

As far as the thread title, why not use something less flamboyant? How about "Apple no longer selling screen protectors in retail stores"?

You still can. Just go somewhere other than an Apple Store to get one. Plenty of places sell them.

There are several quite valid reasons as to why Apple made this decision, and frankly, I understand their position if these are indeed their reasons.

I hope Google's Nexus 1 gets better and kicks the **** out of iPhone sales.

I'm afraid this is no longer possible.

I prefer a matte finish. Every iDevice in my family goes straight from the box to under a Power Support Anti-Glare screen. I have no problem forking over $14.95 + tax in an Apple Store for one... shame they won't sell it to me anymore.

I personally don't use one on my 3G Touch, I hate that they dim the screen and make it less responsive. The coating on the screen is pretty resistant to scratches, and cleans up with a cloth. That being said this move from Apple is stupid. People pay a high price for their devices if they want to use a protector its their choice. If they "F" up the application of it well then that should be their problem not apples.

I guess we know where they'll stand on Ipad Screen Protectors.

Considering a $14.95 screen protector probably costs them a buck I'm surprised they are throwing away that profit.

these protectors are completely unnescessairy. I applaud Apple for this decision. Unless you have sapphire or diamonds hanging out in your pocket, your screen will not scratch from keys or other metal objects. If there is an impact of sufficient force to crack glass to begin with, there's not that much that a thin screen protector will do - the force of impact will likely be transferred to the glass anyway.

clearly not my experience with my iphone and some of my friends iphones. the screen got scratched by keys and/or sand grains in bags and pockets.

i use screen protectors now all the time. have no problems putting them onto the phone with almost no bubble, actually i had never bubbles but the protector is usually a bit off center.

Taking a shot at trolling toward the end there? As other said, they don't want to look like they are endorsing a product that isn't needed. Why would you need an anti-glare filter on a small screen that isn't going to suffer from glare problems? You want to reduce your contrast for no good reason? Fingerprint resistance is already built-in and probably better then any screen protector will do. Never used a protector on an iPhone, but on any plastic screened product I've owned they just fall off or get scratched easier then the screen anyway.

Cannot speak for others, however one of my iPod Touch feel only a foot from the couch onto a hardwood floor and the screen not the glass was toast. :(

Mine fell about 3 feet, onto concrete. Now I have a spiderweb of cracks across the glass. Still functional, but looks terrible.

A casing would surely have helped, but even some additional "surface tension" from a clear screen-protector sticker may have helped. Maybe make it like pseudo-laminated glass.

Let me say this. Thank God for Microsoft, IBM and Linux because who knows what computers would be now if Apple was the only captain at the helm.

But this new policy isn't a problem for me. I don't buy accessories at the Apple Store, the prices are ridiculous and you can get better ones online. But for all the "iPhone is magnificently manufactured beautiful device doesn't need a case" people, I've got a case on mine because without it I find the phone harder to grip and when I put it on a surface it doesn't move. And the anti-glare film came with the case, I put it on, I've had no problems with it.
