The bad thing is that Apple themselves actually 'love' the glossy screens. I remember when the unibody 17" MacBook Pro was released, he said they will have an anti-glare option, showed a picture for a few seconds and then went back to pictures of the regular glossy version saying that this was "his favourite". Glossy (or.. to be more acurate.. the glass) makes people believe the screen is better than it actually is, which I think is great for viewing films etc., but crap for serious editing :(

It's not that Apple loves it. The consumer does with the exception being the tech. This is the same reason why there is so much white on iTunes even though many in this forum complained. Even though light text on a dark background is easier to read and looks more elegant, tests have shown consumers actually like a white background.

Stupid move, as is becoming common with them lately. I love the excuses people are making just to somehow agree with them.

You don't need a screen protector, so sayeth the Apple.

Stores have finite space.

The real world isn't like the internet. Every shelf that has iPhone screens DOESN'T have an Apple product on it.

People act like these stores are infinitely huge. When you put a screen protector in, you take something else out. They've clearly found things that are more valuable than a screen protector. (Shocking, I know.)

Steved

When there's a move like this that doesn't make sense, it's most likely because it's been Steved.

Personally I've never seen the need for one of these covers, but I also find nothing wrong with them. If I had used one, it probably would have protected my screen from some of the light scratches it has, but made the touch sensors a little less responsive.

Reason for screen

When I dropped my iPhone and the glass cracked, the screen protector did keep the glass together and the phone continued to perform as normal. I think without the protector I would have been screwed and probably would have compromised the lcd. I only had to replace the glass and while I was waiting for my replacement glass order I was still able to use my phone, I think that is reason enough to have a screen protector. I also have had two put on by Apple employees with no trouble, no bubbles or anything.

Wouldn't surprise me if apple introduced an "offical" version costing twice as much.

I have had the 2G iPhone, the 3G iPhone and now the 3GS iPhone. In each case I have never used a screen protector. I've never felt the need for such a thing. I do use the back "shell" to protect the back of the iPhone when I'm going out, but that's it. The glass on all three of my iPhones is still as pristine and nice as the day I first bought them.

Not going to happen! Apple have never got into accessories than can be produced by other companies for a a fraction of the price.

They are really hard to put on without getting dust or bubbles under them. I always use one after seeing my co-worker managed to scratch her iPod Touch's screen. I don't know how she managed it but I know she had it in her purse. She must have had loose diamonds in her purse:eek:

Maybe Apple doesn't want to spend hours dealing with an even more difficult support issue for the iPad's huge screen ;)

Yes, this is a no brainer. They can't get the money from you to replace a screen for $200, if it's protected.
And with the Otter cases, the water detector probably won't change, so there goes another $200. Money, Money, Money.

I guess "Apple chooses not to sell screen protectors" is not as good of a headline. Throw in the word banning for maximum sensationalist effect.
Why not just go all out with, "Apple strips customers of their right to purchase screen protectors"

Screens don't break? BS!

Fine by me!

I hate these filter screens. They are completely pointless! The glass screens don't scratch anyway, they offer no protection against breaking or dropping, they interfere with the multi-touch experience and cause friction with swiping and gestures, they ruin the oleophobic coating. I say AMEN Apple! Thanks for doing us a favor. People who want these will still be able to naively fork over $30-$50 at a kiosk in the mall or other places to get them.

The plastic screen reduces the probability that the impact of a hard object will cause a crack -- I've tested this to my satisfaction using my wife's old iPhone. Why was it available for such testing, I hear you ask? Because the screen cracked from hitting some object in her purse, and Apple wanted $300 to fix it. We did what most people do in this situation, we upgraded to a new phone and signed a new 2 year contract with scumbucket AT&T.

If cracking the glass is so unlikely, then why doesn't Apple stand behind their product and offer to fix broken glass for $25 (or something reasonable)?

On the other hand, if Apple is making assloads of money from replacing cracked iPhones and getting people to sign new contracts, and they also want to destroy the secondary market in used iPhones, then banning screen protectors from their stores makes a lot of sense.

Steve Jobs doesn't do anything by accident. This decision was made to increase their profits, nothing more.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/7D11)

I love my zagg cover. Have one on the face and the back. The one on the back has my son's picture on it and the zagg skin makes it slip resistant. I find it necessary for the front because my keys were always scratching the glass. Maybe Masarati keys are diamond coated. :)

Hmm ok. I use a screen protector for basically 3 reasons.

Reason 1... without, the screen gets so covered in finger prints im wiping it every few mins... with the protector finger prints are never a problem.

Reason 2... anti-glare, mines an anti glare protector so the screens visible in all lights... without it it can be hard to see sometimes in bright light.

Reason 3... I dropped mine in the car once and it hit the seat runner... scratched the protector badly which I replaced and it was fine. I'm sure if it happened without it would have damaged the screen (b ear in mind this is glass falling on sharp metal)

The reason I'm a bit gutted about Apple stores not doing them now is due to my past experience. Since christmas I've had 3 or 4 iPhones all replaced under warranty for various reasons (I'm not fussy they were all faulty) every time apple have changed the protector for a new one too... if apple stores stop selling them then that means every time someone has to have one replaced they need to shell out anotuer £12 or whatever

Hi,

Just like with Apple removing applications from the App Store.

It's their store. They can chose what to sell.

Unless you are storing your iPhone in a pocket that has volcanic rocks in it , screen protectors are 100% worthless and pointless.
Not to mention that they hinder the touch interface too.

I stopped using them. They are a waste of money. Anything strong enough to scratch the iPhone screen will go right through a cheap, plastic, over-priced, screen protector.

I applaud Apple for banning them. They probably cause multitouch and heat related problems.

I suspect that a grain of sand in your pocket can scratch either a glass screen or a screen protector, but not the glass screen THROUGH a screen protector. We're really talking minor superficial cosmetic damage here, but it is somewhat annoying to put a small hairline scratch on such a beautiful display. ;) It also could affect re-sale value I guess.

This is really a non-issue overall, you're better off buying screen protectors elsewhere for cheaper (especially EBay.) It is somewhat odd that Apple is discontinuing even cases that have bundled screen protectors though.

Some peeps need to give their heads a shake

I have never, in all my iPhones, used a screen protector. They're junky and, in my view, completely unnecessary.

Though I don't know why Apple would deny them to people who find some use in them...?

Why? I think you answered the question, they are not needed. The screens are already highly scratch resistance as has been observed by many people commented in this thread.

If someone sold tinfoil hats for iPhone and Apple removed it from their store, I am sure some of you (not suggesting GeekLawyer) would complain about the "lack of choice" and "evil empire"

It appears Apple is actually DOING a service for their consumers, they are filtering out the crap. In effect with their Apple store (similar to the App store) Apple is taking the same basic approach. Like most of their products they are saying "here are some items that we (the evil, stupid, dumb dumb head Apple) believe will make your user experience better, we tested out lots of things and these we feel are the best options out of a sea of confusion."

Yes, I get it that the many of the royal entitled me's in this forum don't agree and therefore Apple must be either stupid or evil because you can't fathom why someone wouldn't want to pay $15 for a Jesus phone, er iPhone, accessory that is completely unnecessary and makes the device less usable.

I don't get why everyone is fixated on having poor quality choices. To be horrible "evil" person I will generalize and point out that this seems to be part of a bigger American cultural phenomenon where quantity must trump quality and any sort of expert opinion has to be wrong - because any expert has to be some sort of communist and part of the evil empire to overthrow individual choice.

Your choice is still unaffected. You can always buy these waste of money screen protectors in numerous online. Or horrors... jump ship to the Nexus one or Droid, or windows mobile 7 vapourware.

Oh wait... now you have nothing to bitch over incessantly ad nauseam. My bad, much apologies.

Wow, Now apple is pushing it, seriously, I don't understand why apple is banning screen protector, we already pay a premium price, and also the ipod touch/iphone screen does get scratched.. screen protection is the way to go if you plan on selling it later on or if you want to keep your ipod immaculate..

Really? Now they are pushing it? The locked down store, the secretive practices sometimes leading to the deaths of factory works? The New Jack City Carter Hotel like atmosphere? I mean really, is this the straw that broke the camels back for you?

Yep. Not so much glare for me, but I put on one of the matte screen "protectors" to essentially eliminate faceprints on the phone after talking on it. Yuck.

Second.

I don't need protection for my screen. I need to prevent fingerprints and glare! I spend waaaaaaay to much time buffing smudges as it is, I can't imagine what it would be like without the matte screen protector I have.

I've had my screen protector on for 6 months [3gs] and the i can't even tell it's there.

I had 2 iPhones (3G & 3GS). I never had one single scratch on my screen...i always used beyzacases and put it in my pocket...i find screen protectors difficult to apply, ugly when air bubbles are visible and totally useless...
