**** it is? Thanks for letting me know, that makes me glad now I ended up picking the Pro because I assumed this would fit. I may just go for the replacement through Apple then, I definitely want to hang onto another iPad for media consumption and as much as I like my new Pro I’m not ready to let go of the classic iPad size, haha.

It’s the leather Smart Case which probably is broken in a bit but probably not enough to accommodate a thicker device.
It's not a huge difference, but enough to make a difference for most cases: 7.5 mm vs 6.1mm

Knowing Apple their Smart Case is probably set up so it can only take the exact dimensions of the Air 2, lol. I have no problem paying for a replacement Air 2 now that I have my Pro, but I think I’ll be that guy that takes my old case into an Apple Store one day and try cramming one of their current 2018 iPads into it just to see if it works while their security eyes me suspiciously.

I got my 128GB for $329 brand new.

Does everything an iPad Pro does for less. I can even add a pencil and keyboard and still spend less than an iPad Pro.

Apple still hasn't give me reason to spend 2x for a device that does the exact same thing. TruTone displays and bigger speakers isn't going to cut it.

The flip side, of course, is that they don't necessarily need to give you a reason -- they have given you a product that works for you at a price you are willing to pay. That said, insofar as your real point is that the iPad Pro is overpriced, I agree. This seems to be Apple's year of testing much higher price points and I hope the market rejects this.

If you missed out on the 32gb 6th gen $249 iPad everybody was selling last week, you can still go to Costco and get it for $279.

Anyone used to the thinner, less glossy display of the iPad Air 2 or Mini 4, the iPad just feels clunky and cheap and shiny. Otherwise it’s fine.

Of course, I went to Apple’s website to look through their refurbs and found with their new design, they can’t even sort low-to-high correctly (unless $369<$279).

Nice attention to detial, Apple!

Dumb question maybe: is refurb really 100% a-ok? I have a weird suspicion that I'm buying someone's broken tech that's been spitshined.

I've read that sometimes it's as simple as an open box, or a box that got a little dinged up.

They completely go over the devices, and it's actually more quality control than a new one from the factory.

I've bought several refurbished products from Apple that looked brand new: 2 MacBook Pros, an iMac, an iPad, and even an Apple Watch as a gift for my dad.

My 2011 MacBook was refurbished and I'm still using it without any trouble.

They all come with the same warranty as a new product, and you have the same 14 days to return it if you don't like it for some reason.

I only buy refurb from Apple. They are perfectly fine. Never had a problem.

One advantage of refurbs from the manufacturer is that if there’s any real problem (which occurred when it was new), that problem’s fixed and thoroughly tested. The only downside of them is that you have to wait so danged long for them to show up on Apple’s site to start with.

Since we’re on the subject of Apple refurbs, I had a ton of problems buying the Air 2 brand new when it came out. If I go back to the Genius Bar and do the $299 replacement, it’ll be an Air 2 that’s the same kind of Apple refurb that I would get from this store, right? So basically I’d be getting an Air 2 certified refurb at a discount?

It would essentially be the same as the $359 refurbished Air 2.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the warranty on replacements might be 90 days, versus one year on a refurbished model. You should ask about that.

My Air 2 is already out of AppleCare and warranty anyway, so I guess there wouldn’t be much of a change on that front. I’ll look into that, I think I’m going to do it sometime soon. Thanks!

Also I think the 128GB from the refurb store would be $449 so I’d definitely be getting a significant discount. If I want to keep the old Air 2 going alongside my Pro it seems like it’s worth it.

I have purchased refurbished iPads directly from Apple and they are literally indistinguishable from new. The only way to tell it's refurbished is that the box it comes in says it's refurbished. They come with a full Apple warranty and the option to purchase AppleCare.

If you buy a refurbished iPad from some other seller, it is probably a used product (e.g. an iPad that someone sells to Gazelle when they upgrade to a different model) that is wiped with a cloth and minimally tested or inspected. It usually comes with a warranty backed by the seller, not Apple, and is not eligible for AppleCare. You're taking a chance, and it might work out great or might be disappointing.

I still find it a lot for a second hand product. 15% isn’t that much of an offer on apple’s part. I would expect at least 40% discount...

You can get that on actual second hand Apple products sometimes depending on how old they are.

For manufacturer reconditioned products with a full warranty, not really...

If-then Cook's reseller math:
  1. Apple resells used products for 85% of original MSRP (never less)
  2. If Apple acquires trade-ins for 50 cents on the dollar, 50% of MSRP (and that valuation is way over the top.)
  3. Then Apple receives a lofty 70% gross margin. (1.70*0.5 MSRP[trade-in] = .85 MSRP[refurnished price])
And gross margin goes North from there, as one never receives 50%MSRP on trade-ins.
Just another example of Cook's math.

Slightly off topic, but man, the layout of the refub section really sucks now that they've "iOS-ified" it. So much wasted space, so much less information on the screen. Browsing through a list of refurbished MacBooks or iPads, you used to be able to see at a glance which year they were from -- that's gone now so you have to click on each gigantic tile to see what you're looking at. I'm so sick of everything being dumbed down to the level of a touch interface.

In other words: a ripoff.

Does not compute.
2018 refurbished iPads are probably not trade ins.
