First of all the phone is not new are we forgetting what refurbish means second of all anything cheap is definitely not good or up to standards

I would absolutely buy an Apple refurb. In addition to being cheaper, it's probably been fully refurbished by Apple who has a great process… and it's likely been tested more than a new device.

Unfortunately, it often takes too long for the refurbs to appear.

Not really that great of a deal. Best Buy is always discounting these things by $100 or more. Only reason I see to get one is if you need a 256gb model.

“Refurbs” are literally as good as new, when it comes to Apple.

Don’t make the mistake of interpreting the term as ‘second-hand’ or somehow ‘used’.

It’s as good as new, but technically has to be called a refurb; so Apple reduce the price, but preserve the quality and warranty.

I bought a refurbished 2016 MacBook Pro a few months ago. The only difference was the box, other wise it's exactly the same. I'm happy with the savings. I wouldn't hesitate buying another refurb Apple product.

The 7+ is the sweet spot. Hopefully these models still have iOS 10.3.3 installed or it's no deal.

I'm not saying call them "new", I'm saying if Apple believes that, why dont they just sell them refurbished but with a $10 discount.

Since it is not a $10 discount but a larger one, Apple believes them to be not the same.
I'm not really of the opinion that their refurbished pricing is drastically lower than the next option up. I've never personally felt incentivized to buy refurbished vs. new even in the case of savings several hundred dollars...that's just me of course.

"Refurbished" carries a negative connotation. No one's going to pay $10 less for an item marked "refurbished" vs. "new".

It's a win-win for Apple - they still make money and they establish goodwill with customers by having options. It's also well known that Apple-refurbished carries much more significance than basically any other company offering the refurbishment.

Apple's refurbs are just as good, if not better, than new. You just don't get a fancy box.

So you've not seen the refurb Apple products with internal water damage and poor quality repairs then?
Just because it looks new on the outside, does not mean it's as good as new on the inside.

Nope.
Apple refurbished is just another word for NEW. 10% off is a deal.

It's not new therefor secondhand, you/others can twist it all you want.

There was a case in the Netherlands, an iPhone broke down within the warranty period, she got a refurbished one, sued Apple, got a new one.
In Holland you get a new item by law within the warranty period which is 2 years if it can't be fixed.

That video says nothing.

serious people buy refurbish phones or other tech not wise decision

Buying refurbished saves you some cash especially when we start talking Macs. You can get AppleCare+ on them too. Honestly, if you aren't buying refurb on Apple products, you could be wasting money....

I think that the sale means that 7 is nearing end of production.
Apple may clear 7 inventories with that sale.
Now there is 8, SE and X, and new models coming in 6 months.

I disagree. Used prices for iPhone 7s have increased on Glyde and Gazelle. It might be Apple's best selling phone, but they'll never admit it. Apple wants to get in on the action since sales of iPhone 8 and X have been disappointing.

If Apple is going to discontinue any phone, first it will be the iPhone 6s, not the iPhone 7.

Not true at all in what you posted. Apples replacement iPhones have a new aluminim casing, new battery and new display. Essentially the only thing that is used is the logic board. And they have a one-year warranty.
You sure about Apple's refurb/replacement iPhones having a new display? I have not seen that mentioned in Apple's own statements about their Certified Refurbs. Unless the display is considered part of the outer shell?

Apple Certified Refurbished

Free shipping and free returns
on all refurbished products.

We test and certify all Apple refurbished products and include a 1-year warranty.
All refurbished iPhone models also include a brand new battery, new outer shell and a new white box.
Supply is limited and availability is guaranteed once we receive your full payment.

100% positive The refurbish/replacement iPhone receives an all new display. ALL replacement iPhones receive a new aluminum casing (In this case, an iPhone 7), battery and display. Apple doesn't use 'Old' displays even if they look like they're in 'Good condition'. They replace the displays as part of their refurbished process.

I have had multiple replacement devices in the past, and they indeed replace the displays. Also, for what it's worth, there are multiple threads in the iPhone forum with others having exact same experiences with the display being replaced.

Let's hope this goes out to other countries too.

At least in my country only third parties sell refurbished iPhones, Apple has never sold them on its refurbished store although iPad and Mac are always available.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Most of these are phones that have been bought and returned within 14 days, so they cannot be sold as new anymore. Anything that ages has been replaced, and then everything has been tested. Apple refurbished products are as good as new.
That's a lot of quality phone for $499.
And I really wonder who did the maths to figure out that from $649 to $499 is 10% difference.

If it is just as good as new, why does Apple sell them for a big discount?
Some smart guy had to ask this question. Because they are not new. They are as good as new, but not new.

Apple has put things onto the refurbished store in the past when they _stopped_ selling a product. One day they will stop selling the iPhone 7 and everything in the shops or in any warehouse or in transit will become refurbished (nay-sayers: An Apple refurbished product can actually be brand new). Since they are still selling the iPhone 7, that's not the case. It's simply that every time a phone is returned to Apple that is in good quality it turns into a refurbished phone.

$499 for a 2-year old phone that cost them $180 to build... 2-years ago. Great deal!
Would be if your numbers were correct. And I seriously would advice you to never go into business. You would go bankrupt in a minute because there is tons of cost that you are not considering.

I'll tell you a secret: In order to maximise profits, a business will not find the optimal price to sell at, but make it possible to buy the product at different prices. So even if these phones were brand new, that strategy would make Apple money. The majority still pays full price, but the minority who is too tight or can't justify the cost of replacing their phone buys it cheaper. So you don't lose on every sale as you would do by reducing the general price, but make more money by selling to more people.

That's why restaurants have early bird offers, why shops have vouchers and so on. To get money from those who are not buying at full price.

Maybe he should have said “serious people buy refurbished phones and other tech”

Have been purchasing Apple hardware since Macintosh & Apple II c days and since the G4 purchasing refurbished exclusively.

The savings is significant and all of the machines are still operational today.

If you are looking for a car may I suggest dealer fleet, certified pre-owned is the way to go. Lower price. Longer warranty. Documented service.

Unless you have money to burn go refurbished or lease if you need the latest and greatest.

Yep, I've purchased approximately 35 refurbished Apple products (for myself and clients) over the last 15 years and all worked flawlessly.*

*1 laptop arrived with a slight blemish which Apple replaced without question.

This thread is amazing. I never thought there would be such a divide between refurbished and new. Even I don't like refurbished products but Apple's refurbished is the best I've ever seen. No difference other than the box.

Refurbished is just another word for secondhand, 10% off is way too low

I think secondhand is to be purchased as-is. If the seller (in this case Apple) is placing new cases and batteries, that is slightly more than pure secondhand. Hence, refurbished, not new, but nor secondhand either.

This thread is amazing. I never thought there would be such a divide between refurbished and new...

my story:
i recently got my red 128G iPhone7 off of craigsList for a hundred+ dollars less than these refurbished prices. The lady that sold me the phone met me at the local apple store, had the original packaging and receipts, a nice black Incipio stashbabck case and with most apple products all the adapters you will ever need. The red iPhone had 6mo of use. No scratches & did a genius bar diag so sharp battery no water damage. I gave her cash and a bonus starbucks card someone gave me.

all good but this is the mac rumors forum but in posting this you know i am not an apple associate.

It takes significant personal time to setup a new iPhone just the way you want. If you use it for more than just use if for phone conversations. i had my previous iPhone 5.0 since way back late 2012. i am a medium level user but turn an iPhone over and they all look the same. Serious; give it a try.

I have an iPad Air 2 and a late 2015 MBP, both bought refurbished and I have not had a single problem with either one. Both looked mint out of the box and came with full warranties.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a refurb iPhone. I hope this offer gets extended to Canada.

I'm hoping by the time I'm eligible for an upgrade in September the 8/8+ is in the refurb store. Phones just aren't worth paying for the newest model every other year anymore. I'll be glad to finally get into the plus territory with a much better display and camera.
