Apple today added MacBook Pro and Mac mini models with M4 series chips to its certified refurbished store in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland for the first time since the computers were introduced in October 2024.

Some refurbished MacBook Pro models with M4 chips are also available in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and select other European countries.

As usual for refurbished Macs, prices are discounted by approximately 15% compared to the equivalent new models on Apple's online store. Note that Apple's refurbished inventory changes often, and the order button is still grayed out for some configurations in some countries, so keep checking back if you are eyeing a particular model.

Apple has yet to make refurbished iMac models with the M4 chip available in any countries.

All of the usual accessories are included in the box with refurbished Macs. For the MacBook Pro, this includes a USB-C power adapter and a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. For the Mac mini, this includes the power cord.

Apple says it puts refurbished Macs through "full functionality testing" and a "thorough cleaning process and inspection," and they are covered by Apple's one-year limited warranty and eligible for extended AppleCare+ coverage.

In our view, Apple's refurbished Macs are virtually indistinguishable from brand new ones, providing a good opportunity for savings directly from Apple. But, you can often find better deals on Macs through resellers like Amazon.

Ive returned more than 30 units cause they all had dents in the screen. Why is nobody reporting about this manufacturing QC issue?
You have returned more than 30 MacBook Pros? I'm honestly struggling to wrap my head around this comment. I feel like the odds of getting that many MacBook Pros with a dent in the screen would indicate there is a massive, widespread defect affecting a huge percentage of units, and even if that is true, I feel like I would have given up long before 30 returns. All the power to you, though!

The $509 price of refurb M4 Mac mini is silly. A brand new one direct from Apple is $499.

Only if you buy from the education store. Otherwise they start at $599.

I will always refer people to the Apple Refurbished store when looking at a new computer. I've bought both of my MacBooks refurbished, and a few other family members have gotten Macs and iPods refurbished from them too, they've all been great deals and arrive just like a new one would (minus the fancy box).

hardly any discount

That’s the 48GB model, not the 24GB which normally is 2,399. The 48GB is normally 2,799.

Just looked at some of the MacBook Pro's? If I buy refurb am I unable to do a trade in on my current M1 Mini (like you can with the regular or education store?

There's no reason not to buy from the edu store. Any parent or homeschool teacher is eligible. Since Apple doesn't provide a definition, virtually everyone is eligible.

That is not quite true. Here is their definition:

Save on Mac, iPad, and more with special pricing.

Available to current and newly accepted university students and their parents, as well as faculty, staff and homeschool teachers at all levels

So for example, public high school students or their parents are not eligible. However, this ease of purchase only applies in certain countries like the US and Canada anyway. In many other countries, it's not as easy to buy from the edu store, because you have to provide credentials.

That said, in Canada and the US I recommend everyone buy from the edu store, eligible or not. The other advantage is that some credit cards won't provide extended warranties on Apple refurbs, but will for edu.

Take your M1 Mini to a physical Apple store and do trade-in there. Once you get the Apple gift card from trade-in, use that to buy the refurbished MacBook Pro you want.

BTW, refurbished M2 8/256 GB is only US$90 less than the M4 16/256 GB, and the M2 16/256 GB is actually more expensive.

They need to update their pricing algorithm on the refurb store. It doesn't take into account the M4 baseline 16 GB spec. It's absurd to have the M2 16/256 Gigabit refurb priced higher than the M4 16/256 Gigabit refurb.

I am very serious. They appear like dust so most won't see it until they clean it.

Glossy and nano texture a like. I am not sure what is causing this, but it is definitely during assembly or production.

The spots are random.

The complaints about this is growing and most people dont know Apple is selling damaged components.

Update: Are you a real reporter? I could show you evidence and share my story even order another one and live unpack it.
