It is sad that Apple didn't make it more conventionally user upgradable and customizable. Seems like a computing appliance, albeit a damn slick one (looks like it should be sitting on Darth Vader's desk). With a translucent case, it would be even more like a sci-fi movie prop.

Not really. It's a similar demographic -- geeks and nerds.

Nah, the real nerds hate the new Star Trek, and I'm not a real nerd ;)
What I meant is that I've never heard of Apple doing theater advertising, nor have I ever seen ads for anything but movies and, one time, video games in theaters.

So, I suppose.....

the powers in Apple have a firm date in mind. Fall can fit between Mid-September to Mid-December....just in time for holiday buying season....:D

hopefully early fall. i just hope the price doesn't increase

these things will fold...? (as in Folding@home, not other uses of "fold" implicated)....:D

While I agree, I also wonder: if true, why advertise to the masses in movie theaters (95% of whom will never even consider a computer in this price range)?

Um, when movie ticket prices are either at or approaching $20 per ticket in major cities, I can assure you that more than 5% of people in the theater will consider this computer. And as other people said, it's creating buzz and desire which is an immeasurable commodity.

The astronomical fall (Northern Hemisphere) 2013 begins on Sunday, September 22 and ends on Friday, December 20.

I think the new Mac Pro will be available when Mavericks ship. So hopefully in September!

Uhm, a subset of people who go to the theater frequently are also people that might make films, especially Indie film makers. Very targeted advertising I would think.

Uhm, the percentage of a general theatre audience involved in filmmaking would be statistically insignificant. If they wanted to do targeted advertising to that demographic they'd place ads in trade magazines or websites.

They don't need to place the ad in all theatres.

It's not the same to see it at the theatre as elsewhere, it is not an utilitarian product.

I've only read the first page of this thread but...

I really think you all are missing what Apple is doing here (that or I am overrating their attention to detail). The reason I believe Apple is using this promo at the movie theatre is that more and more students are going to tech base jobs.

Most of my classes in college were roughly around 60 students for when you were first getting started for computer science. Now there is roughly 200 students in the classes. The mid level classes were roughly 30 students. Now they are 60+ students.

What I see is that there is an increase in demand for high paying, high skill technology users coming to age as they see using technology will propel them to either make lots of money to be entrepreneurs or ones that want to explore space.

Using sex appeal on a computer is different thinking as we have really never seen a computer this powerful in a shape or size like this. What I enjoy is that it is small and compact because it can fit on my desk.

I also enjoy that it is modular. That you can expand add ons in the way you see fit. I wonder if they will allow upgrades to the internals through allowing you to pull out the middle and replace one of the 3 boards.

Anyways, to the point is that this computer may not take off as fast as all the people in the business world may want but this gets people in the 12-22 range who are looking for the future.

The reason why I say this is the future is because I want to stick one in the middle of my house to run my smart house and give a nice middle finger to the cloud. Let this run all my push notifications too.

I also see this as being very fitting for some other possible products Apple can make though they will come with time and understanding of this device. Again, I don't believe Apple plays everything in the here and now. With some products they play the long game to see how things and people's mindset to certain ideas and products.

Sorry I tend to analyze things in very detailed parts of a system. Remember these products are powerful tools that may change our lives and the specs are actually pretty amazing for doing 40GB/s PCIe when 2nd gen does 16GB/s. Also 7 teraflops of graphics power is an insane amount for something in that size.

I'm sorry this post is a long one but I'll end with this, if you like this Mac Pro or not vote with your dollar. I won't be buying one anytime soon as I don't have a house. Though in the future I would like to play with one to use to reach my dreams and whether you like it or not there are more and more dorks/nerds/(WhateverYouWouldLikeToCallUs).

Those who dream about changing the world are inspired by the systems present but may only do so by seeing the correct steps.

Since I was watching an Indie Film, "The Way, Way, Back" which would not appeal to a general audience, I suspect that there would in fact be more viewers that would be film buffs and creatives. Both myself and my friend that saw this movie are future buyers of the Mac Pro; me for MCAD and photography, her for Graphics Design and photography.

But, you are correct. I don't have more than intuition that the ad would appeal to viewers that will be buyers, but it would definitely support that brand for iPhone users, who are plentiful.

Maybe the new (entry level) iMac Pro is going to be priced for a broader market than just "Pro's". I'm due for a new iMac and I'm sort of curious to see if this is a possible alternative (I already have a Cinema Display that I use as a second monitor with my current iMac).

oh they will fold. of course you can only fold with those GPUs in windows, and those processors would be good, but not great. these days you gotta have 16 cores at a minimum to get the real big points

hopefully someone is able to get one and fold with it to let us know what it can do :apple:

why would they advertise in movie theaters for what will likely be a $5000 desktop computer? They need to be targeting people who need these machines not the general public

Your post suggests pro people don't go to the movies. Perhaps you could call Apple and tell them where the pro people hangout?

wine cooler fails, Apple resurrects Cube, Dinosaurs eat man, woman inherits the Earth.

I want a white one. Apple in black don't look so good. also the cm is not as great as it should be. they should show the interior of the computer.

as for the price I think it will be very cheap, they are dropping one processor and also some upgrade options, so in my opinion the entry model will be less than 2.000$.

and they have 2 videocards but they only buy the chip and connect it to the cooling system dropping the price of the video cards

funniest thing i ever heard--i hope you're not serious. apple does not drop prices on new models when they're such an upgrade over previous models. considering that the current single-processor mac pro starts at $2500, with a consumer-level video card, there is NO WAY this will start at less than $2k.

if apple saves money by not buying fans for graphics cards, that's like $2 per machine. they'll chalk that up to higher margins.

I'd be surprised if it started at less than 3k.
