it would be nice... see if my MBA runs a bit faster/cooler and free up 6 gigs on the hard drive.

Whee hee! I am so stoked and hoping that this really will happen. It'd be so convenient installing an OS before university starts - plus a friend is visiting, so we could possibly attend the grand release.

What a warped sense of reality a person must have to think that there exists only the binary choice of farting out a bug filled piece of manure or work endlessly on it because perfection is unatainable. In reality there is the choice of maybe extending development by a few weeks, maybe months to release something more polished, depending on what the software companey deems is acceptable.

And right there is the problem, that standard is pretty low in general and Apple makes point of claiming to be better than most in that regard, which is just not so if this is GM. In truth I expect better from Apple and a OS with issues easily detectable and mention many places only lowers my repect for anyone who would deem it acceptable.

I would gladly continue trying to help you get a basic grasp of my simple point, but I've come to realise I would likely make more headway discussing it wih a log.

So assuming this is correct...will those of us that have a newer machine have to wait for the new OS to ship out (end of Sept) or will it be available via a download?

there will be no download. never is (too large)

As for when you get it, well if you bought that new machine during the UpToDate dates and have ordered the disk, you'll likely get it the day of release. or perhaps a day after depending on the carrier used.

Or if you got the machine before then and have to buy the $29 upgrade you can pop into any store the day of release and with luck they won't be out of stock. Or you can order online, perhaps even preorder once Apple has announced the release date and get it on the date or within several days of your order. etc.

As for the whole "if I buy a new machine". they have in the past, and likely will this time, put a disk in the box which you can use to update your new machine. Pop it in on the first chime and hit C and if you are fast enough it will flip to the disk and not the start up assistant and you can do the update before you set up and migrate off your old machine. or you can pay them to do all of it for you.

yes, it does

So what about those people with a MacBook Air?

Unfortunately, the "blogosphere" happened - and shipping manure is a lesser evil than shipping quality a month or two later. (And an obsessive-compulsive control-freak of a CEO doesn't help...)

They're still paying for their mistake of buying one?

Hmmm.

This week I downloaded Windows 7 Home Premium / Pro / Ultimate RTM DVDs (both the x86 and x64 kits for each), plus the Win2k8R2 x64 RTM DVD.

I don't think that it's "too big" on the push side is an issue - but the majority of the users don't have a big enough "Internet tube" to pull it down.

Why not offer downloads to the people who have the bandwidth, and ship DVDs to those who don't?

Or does this touch on Apple's allergy to "choice"?

I'm curious too why people even care about what the disk looks like that the typical user uses once and rarely ever looks at again. *sigh*

I totally agree. That is why I couldn't believe the number of comments related to the appearance of the packaging and disk. It baffled me and to be honest, I truly expected a lot more comments on this thread bc of the training document (or whatever some posted earlier).

Don't get me wrong, I am thankful there wasn't a bunch of whining and I hated to even bring it up. But I just couldn't help noticing it.

Point is, we're gonna get it on the 28th and by the 29th it will be tucked away in drawer somewhere. :D

i'll wait until at least 10.6.3, not apple's guinea pig. but good luck to rest you lining up for the first day.

I'm starting to think the same way as you. I have my OS X Leopard running perfectly. Yet when I tried 10a432(GM?) I found that aside from the oddness of system preferences not saving correctly or reverting after a restart - some of my favorite apps aren't tested / certified for Snow Leopard.

I have mixed feelings about Apple shipping 10a432 as GM - if true, actually a bit disappointed. Also a :rolleyes: if the DVD art is really a snow leopard.

i don't know. i kinda don't like that it might be coming out so soon. I have been waiting since march in order to purchase my first mac. I've been waiting for snow leopard. Then i hear rumors of an iMac update and price drop in the fall, and i don't know whether to wait for that or even if it's the rumor is true.

Now that snow leopard might come out early, I'm not sure if i would want to wait for the iMac update. I've been waiting for almost 6 months, and I don't know if i can wait any longer after SL is released.

If SL was released at the end of september, that would be closer to October which would be the likely time that an iMac refresh would happen.

It's silly to base your hardware purchasing decision on a $30 piece of software. You probably should have bought an iMac 6 months ago. There are ALWAYS rumors about new Apple hardware coming out in a few more months. It is generally not that hard to know when Apple hardware is ACTUALLY coming out, because it follows a fairly regular schedule.

Now if you told me you were waiting for an iMac with a BluRay drive, or USB 3.0 then it might make sense to wait until those hardware options are available.

Damn, we'll be waiting forever!

Especially because there is only 30 days in September.

Yup, that was part of the joke...Apple always promises things in a particular month and rarely delivers. Apple TV, anyone? Push notifications? All delayed.

As I've said before, I will be very, very surprised if it hits in August - that is VERY unlike Apple.

Agreed. I remember when 10.5 came out people were "waiting" for hardware upgrades as well, and I'm not sure if Apple delivered new iMacs at that time (can't remember!).

Hopefully just because SL is only $30 doesn't mean it won't be that much better than leopard.

How could anyone rate this a negative? Do you NOT want Apple's employees to learn to use it? Do you think the Aug 28 release date is TOO EARLY? I don't get it.

Some people like to vote negative because they're opposed to happiness.

I actually just talked to my school's computer store tech guy yesterday (Thursday) about student pricing and he said they're not expecting a shipment till the middle of September :(. But they could just be getting them latter, he doesn't know.

Build 10A432 has been great for me so I disagree:

64-bit kernel on my MBP and MP [check]
Open CL [check]
64-bit kernel extension that I actually need [check]
Smaller footprint [check]
Stable [check]

I'm sure there are a few "3rd party" kernel extensions that are not ready yet but I've had luck with the few that I actually need.

Luck? I doubt there are any 64 bit kexts yet from 3rd parties. Which ones did you have luck with?

I'm not sure if Apple delivered new iMacs at that time (can't remember!).

They didn't, at the time I worked in a store for a Premium Reseller, and the iMacs we already had in stock were part of the up2date program. The ones that came later had Leopard discs in the packaging, but not installed.

An early release actually makes sense. With the Windows 7 release on Oct 7, they would not want to wait too long and get their publicity snowed in by the Microsoft press machine. If they would release on Sep 30, everybody'd be talking about it right until about Oct 1, when the press starts anticipating the W7 release in less than a week.

The faster SL comes out, the faster we can get to 10.6.1 and .2

I was sure I would install SL the day it came out, but now I'm not so sure.

What is the status of 10A432 versus the 'hypothetical' 10A435? There are rumours of 10A435 and I'm wondering whether that it is just idiots on twitter and macrumors stirring up trouble before the release.

I've got 10A432, it has quite a number of bugs, so I am wondering whether 10A435 to tie up some loose ends or does one have to reside oneself to a buggy release.

If it ships on August 28, that would be good. If it ships in September, that will also be good. The point is that we will have it soon. Of course, with all exciting things, the sooner the better. However, Windows users waited 2-3 extra years for their follow up to XP. What is an extra month?

Probably because the demand is not that high to justify the infrastructure costs to get people to download 6 gigabyte files. Microsoft accomodated downloads for their enterprise customers mostly. Not to mention that their infrastructure is far more widespread than that of Apple.

Aidenshaw!!! wish i could say it's pleasant to see you here, but.....
so what brings you by today? i don't recall anyone mentioning Dell or Microsoft?!

interesting you use your opinion of steve's personality to assume that SL will be manure in the first place. maybe you could be more mature than that and reserve judgement until after it ships.

since you think it was a waste of money, i'm glad that you didnt by a MB Air. however, for those people that did (despite what you think to be reality) they will have no problem getting SL on their machines.

as for your download argument, i was with you on the "internet tube" (lmao) and providing a download vs dvd option, up until you vomited all over your logical thought process by then saying they actually don't provide downloads because apple is allergic to "choice".

i'm glad MS is meeting all your needs, and providing such downloads to you. along those lines, i sure am glad when i refer to my OS i only have to say OS X and not have to regurgitate things like Win2k8r2 x64 RTM. when i say things like that, i want to ask if its a friend of C3PO or R2D2.

Usually with Apple, September means "September 31". I'd be shocked if it actually shipped in August! Can't wait to try it out. It's only $30 too!

I know that Apple thinks different and all but I doubt they will try to change the calendar to give September 31 days for an OS Release (and a minor one at that).
