I'll probably be sending my 4S to Gazelle next month when my 5S comes. I've done eBay, but I feel like going the recycle route this year.

Gazelle offered me $210 for my 16GB iPhone 4s but only $220 for my 64GB. I might have to go eBay for that one :(

You can get $385 right now on orangeoffer.com for a 16 GB iPhone 5.

They've got GREAT prices, but they're giving quotes for something that needs to be shipped in 5 days. I need my iPhone a few more weeks than that.

I'll be sure to check them after I order my 5s.

Gazelle is offering a deal to send in your phone by Octboer 15th if you lock in a price now. I've been checking the past few weeks waiting for this deal.

More power to ya. I'll take the extra $185 and wait 10 days.

It's not JUST a wait of 10 days. It's extra work to use the web site, package up the phone, hope it's not stolen in the mail, make sure the phone is wiped, move my personal data over....

It's the convenience of knowing that will all be done for me, and correctly.

It all depends on how much your time is worth. For an extreme example, would you think Donald Trump would 'save' $185 by doing this himself? No way! His time is worth much more than that! I'm no Donald Trump, but the $185 or so is still not worth it to me.

Now can you trade in phones when your still under contract with verizon? can I trade in my 5 for a 5S if i'm still under contract? (2 years)

If this is true then maybe. We have no details about what models can be traded in. It might be only pre iPhone 5

but you will be paying full price for that 5s as price is set by your contract. And Apple will not necessarily be paying based on the full price of the unit but rather perhaps what you paid.

I know AT&T will give you an early upgrade price of $449 for the latest iPhone, one year into contract. If you can trade in a 5 for about $300, net $149 is not too bad to be able to upgrade to the 5S.

I don't think that is true anymore. That option disappeared for me shortly before they released AT&T Next, their new service that lets you upgrade yearly, for an additional monthly cost. My current only option per my plan, is paying full price for phones.

.
Nice way for Apple to help their revenue and pad their numbers.

Not sure why someone would be all excited to trade in their 5 for a 5S when it is practically the exact same phone. Must not have much else to get excited about in life. :(

Not exactly. If you read the fine print this is done by an outside company. With apple's blessing and thus why they do it as an apple gift card (likely part of the terms for getting that blessing)

Rumor is that they are ditching that and doing it directly

Ahh… OK. In Spain they give you cash. It's also managed by an external company though.

not sure if this counts as "trade-in". But they've always offered 10% off a new iPod if you recycled your existing iPod (good or damaged)

You can generally get 10% off iPods if you try your luck at the right time. I did this at a London Apple store last Christmas when they attempted to price match a special offer with some iPod Nano's with John Lewis.

I would never give anything away for a 10% rebate, as this is the most common discount margin for retailers to give and still turn a profit.

It's true for me...I have the option currently to do an early upgrade at a reduced discount.

There's an additional note when I check on my upgrade eligibility that states I'm not currently eligible for Next on the line. Maybe it has something to do with the timing of the last upgrade on the on line...

It was true for me as of last week.

Yeah, that is so great, I think I'll do that instead of getting $530 on ebay.

Just pointing out how much more they're offering versus gazelle and others.

More like $400. The 64 GB might be closer to $530 on eBay, but not the 16. Unless you find a sucker.

That is so much more inconvenient than going to the Apple Store and trading it in. I would take $200 at the Apple Store for the convenience alone.

I love this convenience! and would take $50 and a bowl of fresh fruit for a trade in on a new model, at least that's what I get when I trade in my BMW yearly. The salesmen are so nice and happy too, always pleased to see me.

I love convenience!

Too bad they won't have it in Canada
why do you think they won't do this in Canada? they might start this program in US but I expect it will eventually be expanded to other countries including Canada.
It's convenient but a lot less than what you can sell it for on craigslist.
this is true but is mostly irrelevant. Most people will not know of/consider other options when offered to trade in their old phone while shopping for a new one. It takes some effort to sell stuff on CL or Ebay and by and large people will not bother even if the savings can be considerable. This worked for ages with used cars and it will work here too. It's quite amazing how much people are willing to pay for convenience (often because of ignorance of alternatives to be sure).
Apple is well aware of this as they have been selling RAM and hard drives at huge markups compared to independent retailers. So I expect they'll offer up to 200$ for old iphones and most people will take it.

great trick to increase the sales of the iphone, i hope the next iphone isnt too expensive, it'll be great to see the iphone completely destroy the note3's sales

Why would you beliieve the new iPhone will suddenly be more expensive than its always been, $199 on contract?

Why the odd comparison with the Note 3 in particular, suggesting that it's "sales" are somehow impressive?

Makes me think. If I trade in my iPhone to buy one, then apple sells mine across the planet...
Does that count as 2 iPhones sold?

Basically, they can skyrocket iPhones sales numbers with the potential double sale of each phone.
