This story about selling in 3rd world countries is bull.
umm ok, not sure what story you read, but no mentions about 3rd world countries here...

That is so much more inconvenient than going to the Apple Store and trading it in. I would take $200 at the Apple Store for the convenience alone.
I'll probably be sending my 4S to Gazelle next month when my 5S comes. I've done eBay, but I feel like going the recycle route this year.
You can get $385 right now on orangeoffer.com for a 16 GB iPhone 5.
So which possibility on doing business does this leave?

Isn't apple doing this already? http://store.apple.com/us/browse/reuse_and_recycle
More power to ya. I'll take the extra $185 and wait 10 days.
Now can you trade in phones when your still under contract with verizon? can I trade in my 5 for a 5S if i'm still under contract? (2 years)
Except you know they dont recycle it right.... They list it on ebay for sale within hours of inspection....
Oh, who knew?
Well that's fine then.
I know AT&T will give you an early upgrade price of $449 for the latest iPhone, one year into contract. If you can trade in a 5 for about $300, net $149 is not too bad to be able to upgrade to the 5S.
In person, all cash transaction in a public place inside a bank or coffee shop.
Not exactly. If you read the fine print this is done by an outside company. With apple's blessing and thus why they do it as an apple gift card (likely part of the terms for getting that blessing)
Rumor is that they are ditching that and doing it directly
not sure if this counts as "trade-in". But they've always offered 10% off a new iPod if you recycled your existing iPod (good or damaged)

I don't think that is true anymore. That option disappeared for me shortly before they released AT&T Next, their new service that lets you upgrade yearly, for an additional monthly cost. My current only option per my plan, is paying full price for phones.

Yeah, that is so great, I think I'll do that instead of getting $530 on ebay.

why do you think they won't do this in Canada? they might start this program in US but I expect it will eventually be expanded to other countries including Canada.Too bad they won't have it in Canada
this is true but is mostly irrelevant. Most people will not know of/consider other options when offered to trade in their old phone while shopping for a new one. It takes some effort to sell stuff on CL or Ebay and by and large people will not bother even if the savings can be considerable. This worked for ages with used cars and it will work here too. It's quite amazing how much people are willing to pay for convenience (often because of ignorance of alternatives to be sure). It's convenient but a lot less than what you can sell it for on craigslist.
great trick to increase the sales of the iphone, i hope the next iphone isnt too expensive, it'll be great to see the iphone completely destroy the note3's sales
.
Nice way for Apple to help their revenue and pad their numbers.
Not sure why someone would be all excited to trade in their 5 for a 5S when it is practically the exact same phone. Must not have much else to get excited about in life.
