I tried this with my 3GS when I bought my 4S but they said they couldn't do anything with it.

Glad to hear they finally fixed it... it seems like a no brainer and I'm surprised it took them 7 generations* to do it.

*Plus all those generations of iPod before the iPhone

umm I should try fix things that never existed before a company even announces it

great trick to increase the sales of the iphone, i hope the next iphone isnt too expensive, it'll be great to see the iphone completely destroy the note3's sales

The Note 3 is not iPhone 5s primary competition. These are 2 very different animals and are geared towards different crowds. Your basically comparing a Honda Accord to a Chevy Suburban. I don't believe Samsung makes the Note devices to compete with their "S" devices or the iPhone directly. All Samsung is doing is offering choice; something Apple is afraid to do. It has flagship specs but it will never beat the Galaxy S4 or iPhone in sales because those phones appeal to more people.
The only phones that can compete with the Note 3 would be the 6.44" Sony Xperia X ultra, the 5.5" LG Optimus G, the 6.3" Samsung Mega and the upcoming 6" HTC One. The 4" iphone is not in the same league. The bottom line is that Android has too many weapons to choose from. I would find it embarrassing if Apple gets beat by one model because Android users have better selection compared to last year.

Makes me think. If I trade in my iPhone to buy one, then apple sells mine across the planet...
Does that count as 2 iPhones sold?

Basically, they can skyrocket iPhones sales numbers with the potential double sale of each phone.

It would make sense for it to count as two phones sold, as two phones were produced...and sold. One would have a higher total cost (warranty, shipping, customer service, etc) to the company than the other though, and this would reflect in the accounting.

This is no different than going out and buying a refurbished Acer laptop or Canon camera for cheaper. The company makes less money than if it was sold brand new, but more than if it was thrown in the trash.

If they match Gazelle, I would much rather just trade it in at the Apple Store versus sending it in and going through all that.

Ooooh! Aaaaah!

the old iPhones would be refurbished and sold in emerging markets, lowering the cost of entry in those countries

So I guess the problem is not that you misread, but that you just don't know that there is a difference between "emerging markets" and "3rd world countries".
so you're one of those people...

Will Apple reduce price for iPhones that came with scratches and dents when new?

I'd like to know whether Apple will reduce the price it will pay me for my iPhone 5 with the nicks and scratches it came with new if I trade it in. Guess I know the answer to that one.

Excellent point. I am sure that is how it will be counted on the books. And when asked if this is the case on their earnings call, we will get the usual evasive answer.

although the note 3 isn't meant to directly compete with the iphone, but, it's release will affect the note3's sales just like the iphone will affect the note 3's sales.

Why would you beliieve the new iPhone will suddenly be more expensive than its always been, $199 on contract?

Why the odd comparison with the Note 3 in particular, suggesting that it's "sales" are somehow impressive?

1) i was talking about the full price (because i buy the unlocked version)
2) note series is one of the most successful line in the android world (and i compared it to the iphone because a new note is coming on 4th Sep)

If the price is fair, I can avoid the 2-year ritual of selling my phone(s) to nervous teens in the Ukraine. Yeah!

How much do you guys think Apple will offer for a 32gig 4S iPhone in excellent condition?
On eBay some are selling for more than $300.
That sounds like a good price but my experience with Apple is that they might not offer more than $100 for it. :(

I went to the apple store today and asked about the trade-in program. He said that the trade-in was only toward the purchase of a full price iPhone. ($649+ version)

Was this common knowledge? Or maybe this guy had it wrong? (I hope)

What happened to the good ol' days when Apple released a new iPhone to mile-long lines of buyers, and stores with barely enough phones on hand to the meet demand?

Now, apparently, they need to dangle the "trade-in carrot" to entice you to buy the "upgraded" model?

This trade-in offer speaks volumes.

If the prev-gen phone has enough value to knock the price of a 5S down by a couple or three hundred bucks, it seems people would be just as likely to do a free swap for the functionally equivalent 5C.
