This was entirely uneventful today, but I will not be jumping ship (well maybe). I will most likely buy it and use my fathers upgrade next year to get the better one.

Apple haven't blown it by any means, they know exactly what they are doing.

Its just a shame for the hardcores like you and me who were expecting more.

I still think if there was a redesign they could have sold even more than the 4S will sell.

They blew it up for sure...

Show why they are the world wide leaders in the smartphone market.

By the end of this year it is likely that Apple will have the top three selling smartphones in 2011. Awesome stuff!

Yeah, Apple's been drinking their own kool-aid if they think the new software features will drive demand for this thing. I just don't understand this from a business decision. A new design would have sold so many more units. This makes no sense at all.

Did you even watch the keynote? I bet you didn't...

Lets see:
-Browsing on par with 4G speeds from a 3G phone.
-Amazing power and great battery life.
-Siri is honestly cool (which is funny because I thought I'd never use it).
-New and improved camera.
-New iOS

How is that not a good improvement? How did Apple blow it? I hope you realize technology doesn't evolve as fast as Macrumors readers think it does.

People expect too much. If you want something amazingly better go invent it.

I agree with the new hardware, Siri and ios5, I'm sold. I think they are taking what are popular features that are already out there and making them work well.

call me crazy, but i don't think Apple is too concerned with the minuscule population of cell phone geeks that are overly-concerned with having a larger screen and 4G. when everything is said and done the 4S will replace the 4 as the top-selling smartphone.

They are all spec nerds who are the target audience of android devices.

I don't even know how they ended up in the apple system unless android just sucks that much that they can not even appease their target audience.

Apple certainly will not lose any sleep over them, they know what they are doing and they know who buys their devices and why and this keynote squarely targets those people and those needs.

no other way around it

no 4g and same old boring design

hello samsung

I disagree. What else were you wanting ? LTE chips are too big to have the same design or even a slimmer design like you want. Not to mention horrible battery life. Apple is smart now they can release LtE next year and sell even more. 3Gto3Gs was a huge speed increase... I imagine this update will be even greater compared to iPhone 4. I'm excited

well, looks like this fanboy, will be waiting for the next one to come out, there is no way I am renewing a 2 year contract with att for that! They have lost their minds! I will be sticking with the 4 till the next gen is finally out. I am wondering if the wwdc next spring will finally bring the phone we were expecting.

what does it matter if you sign another contract or not? or you planning on switching carriers?

I think people are looking at other phones and seeing 4G, 4.3-4.5in screens, ect. They're looking at the hardware end of it. The software what apple brought to the 4s has been in other devices for some time, so not exactly anything new, just new to apple.

Saved $199 with this announcement. Will use the money instead to buy a Kindle Fire!

that was the most retarded keynote ever...for once i'll hold off buying an iphone...as many of you have said...siri is sweet but i don't think i'll utilize it as much...sorry apple, not this time!

Apple is following a path in the technological world similar to what Nintendo has done in the video game world.

They're leaving the hard core to focus on a wider population. It backfired on Nintendo because casual fans don't keep buying games. For apple, it will pay off because the mass population will keep buying the iPhone.

They're going to start losing the hardcore fans though. And as the hardcore continues to leave, the magic will fade.

+1

Can't Wait. A couple of weeks ago I bought a Canon ELPH 300HS to remove my dependency on a cell phone cam when out and about. So small I forget I have it.

Now I'm free to pick a phone and not base my decision on a camera.

thanks in large part to the unquestioning followers who would buy a dog turd if it had an 'i' on it and came in a lovely white box

Lets see:
-Browsing on par with 4G speeds from a 3G phone.
HSPA+ has been available on Android phones since February (maybe earlier)
-Amazing power and great battery life.
Isn't it the same battery life as before?
-Siri is honestly cool (which is funny because I thought I'd never use it).
...Google/Android has had voice actions and voice recognition for over a year
-New and improved camera.
Its still a cell phone camera, no matter how Apple tries to spin it. Physical limits on sharpness due to sensor size.
The best thing in IOS5 are the notifications that they stole from a competing OS.

How is that not a good improvement? How did Apple blow it? I hope you realize technology doesn't evolve as fast as Macrumors readers think it does.

Hey, I am no Apple fan, but I will give the company credit where it is due.

The hardcore hipsters and trend-followers that have made up Apple's core demographic have had to endure 1+ years of their phone *not* being the most advanced phone on the market. Even when it was announced, the iPhone4 was already not the most powerful phone available.

The current incremental upgrade (after ~16 months) is a letdown for people who were hoping to buy the latest, coolest device from Tim Cook & Company.

I was saying months ago (during antennagate) that the iPhone was no longer the 'cool' device to own. I guess it has taken this long for many Apple fans to begrudgingly admit that that might be the case.

Objectively, there is nothing wrong with the iPhone 4S..... but playing 'catch up' and suing their closest competitors (Samsung) are making people take a hard look at what else is available.

Just sayin

People expect too much. If you want something amazingly better go invent it.
Lol, well.... if you do manage to invent something better, then Apple will sue you over some BS patents or "community design".... so that advice won't work.

Apple's own fault. They hype up the marketing, point fun at the competition and claim that their stuff is the best in the world. It is only just that they reap the whirlwind when they don't deliver.

Huh? "Get away with this crap"?!

Can we get away from this idea that Apple somehow owes you something please? Buy it, or don't. Those are your options.
Calm down fan boy. Where did I say apple owed me anything? What I meant by saying they can "get away with it" is that they can wait 16 months to update their flagship produce with nothing but a spec bump and still sell millions.

They don't owe me a thing. But don't feel compelled to drop $200 for a iPhone 4.5 either.
