Huh? "Get away with this crap"?!

Can we get away from this idea that Apple somehow owes you something please? Buy it, or don't. Those are your options.

having an opinion on something isn't feeling 'owed', though after being a loyal customer for the past 10 years does give me a sense of feeling that maybe they should reciprocate and be loyal, in some part, to me, and every other customer who built them

Having the news event at the Apple Campus was a give away that it would be just a specs upgrade.

No, they didn't.

4 is a great design. Macbook Pro design is great and hasn't changed since 08. I'm getting very sick and tired of the smartphone industry, I think I'm just gonna buy my 4s, enjoy my phone, not care about this crazy talk anymore. It's a phone. Doesn't need a 4 inch screen. Doesn't need anything. I think they did well, I can see how people are upset, but lets just enjoy it.

Calm down fan boy. Where did I say apple owed me anything? What I meant by saying they can "get away with it" is that they can wait 16 months to update their flagship produce with nothing but a spec bump and still sell millions.

They don't owe me a thing. But don't feel compelled to drop $200 for a iPhone 4.5 either.

Fanboy? How so? I'm not getting one. I don't care if you're getting one. I don't particularly care if no one buys one.

Yep, that's that for me too... now to look for an alternative...

I currently own a 3GS and my contract runs out mid-November, but I don't think I'll want the 4S. It's like a doom-loop of minor spec-bumps and I'm not going to be a part of it for another two years. It's not even that the 4S wouldn't be such a big improvement over the 3GS but - and I am aware of how silly this sounds - I think I'll be a responsible customer and show them that they can't get away with anything.

I mean, take this new promo video for instance. Apple was always pretty... generous when it came to praising their products, but this is just silly.
They "completely rethought the insight"? Who shall believe that? Or does it really count as a "complete rethink" if you go:
"Uhm... okay... how about... how about we take out the A4 Chip... and... and instead, we're going to use an A5!!" *gasps and euphoric applause from the staff*

Are we witnessing the early beginings of the downfall of Apple?

Hear me out before you flame me please. Ever since Steve Jobs came back to Apple, he has hit product after product out the park. Apple is now the 2nd most valued company in the world (right behind everyones favorite, ExxonMobil). Now that Steve is no longer at Apple to handle the day to day business, Tim Cook has that hat now. Today was suppose to be a big day for him. Sure we got a new camera, Siri and 64GB, but no new design, no LTE, no NFC, no nothing.. What a crappy way to begin as CEO.

Apple has always been cocky and arrogant but has always been able to back it up (iPad, iPhones, MacBooks.. etc..) but what they did today is just unacceptable. After 14 months they needed an iPhone 5, not this iPhone 4S crap. Android handsets are more appealing then ever before. I used to mock that ever few weeks we have a new Android handset, but when they do release them, its something different and uniquely fresh. Theirs nothing fresh about the iPhone 4S. Nothing about it makes you want to stand in line for 12 hours out in the rain and cold. Nothing about it makes it "magical".

If this is just a glimpse of how Apple is going forward with their products (Marginal updates each year) I think the Apple is going to fall from the tree harder then what people may think.

GOOD NEWS! ! ! !

Your old case will still fit the NEW iPhone! Winning!!!!!

Disappointed like the rest BUT tbh, for Apple it's all about China. That's where their growth will come from and they only officially got the iPhone a few months ago.

if thats your mentality go buy a nokia 3310, why waste money on a 4S?

thanks in large part to the unquestioning followers who would buy a dog turd if it had an 'i' on it and came in a lovely white box

Really?

So Apple will have 3 devices that probably sell at least 150% as many units as the best selling android device and it is all from blind followers who don't know what they are doing?

You are talking about 10s of millions of people. Why do android manufacturers fail to capture even a fraction of that loyalty? Instead of putting in big screens shouldn't they be copying apple's brainwashing because that is why they are successful?

At this point and time to lay the massive number of iphone sales on blind fanboys just makes you look like an imbecile.

Why not a 7" screen if a bigger screen is better?

A 7" screen with 480x240 resolution would be the bomb!

Did you even watch the keynote? I bet you didn't...

Lets see:
-Browsing on par with 4G speeds from a 3G phone.
-Amazing power and great battery life.
-Siri is honestly cool (which is funny because I thought I'd never use it).
-New and improved camera.
-New iOS

How is that not a good improvement? How did Apple blow it? I hope you realize technology doesn't evolve as fast as Macrumors readers think it does.

People expect too much. If you want something amazingly better go invent it.

I agree. Surely the most important thing is iOS 5! Software makes a device!

$15-20 BILLION in lost market capitalization since this morning tells you that yes, Apple blew it.

Four years... of only a single 3.5" screen option.

Might have been amazing THEN for a 'phone',
but today's data centric user wants a larger screen choice?

For some perspective, just about every keynote that has been given over the past few years have had the same amount of complaining, whining and people stating they're underwhelmed.

Also the product cycle are such that the 4S has been on the boards when S Jobs was in the picture so this isn't something that could be attributed to Cook as the downfall of apple either.

Yes, Apple did blow it really hard

I bet other companies wish they would blow it like you claim Apple supposedly blew it. We heard the same thing from rabbid fans when the 3GS came out. This new iPhone will sell just as well as previous iPhones. There will be lines just as before. Lots of people who are coming off 2 year contracts have the 3G or 3GS iPhone, so for them this will be a huge upgrade.

Sure, there was no big surprise and I'm not compelled to upgrade my iPhone4, but it's still better than the 3G -> 3GS upgrade. I'm kind of glad I won't be drooling over a new phone just yet. There's still a lot of good things about the 4S that are getting downplayed:

HSDPA
Photo Quality
Battery Life
Siri
A5 Chip

Mac OS vs Windows, history repeating itself all over again. Apple stops innovating, someone else catches up, Apple sues, but still becomes irrelevant.l The beginning of their 2nd decline. The writing is on the wall, all the same indicators are there. Closed ecosystem versus Open etc. etc.

They needed to push the bar up another level or two to stay ahead. It seems as though their coasting on their laurels now. Very dangerous. Poor Tim Cook gets this to deliver as his first key note. Not really a good way to set him up as the new CEO.

It's scary that there are still people who will disagree. I can't see why. Today was a joke.

I agree there wasn't much on show and it isn't a huge improvement.

However
I never owned an iPhone 4 so I'll certainly be getting the 4S. And also they invented the iPhone 4... it's hard to really improve on that with current tech. I remember buying my iPod Touch 4G last year and wondering how they can improve on that, too.

I can't believe apple didn't design this phone based on online rumor and 3rd party case designs!

:(

While i expected the 4S over a redesigned 5, the main reason I'm pissed is that there was NO reason for them to stray from the normal july release. Why make us wait 3-4 months extra just for a phone that is the same as the 3g->3gs? It's not like us Verizon guys get to upgrade early or anything. No one who got the iPhone 4 for verizon will be able to get this 4S anyway unless they use someone else's upgrade.

I said in "large part", not every single 4S customer, and lets not be silly now no one is asking for 7", but lets at least have something a little bigger, I'm not the only one asking...

I agree today was a big let down. But I like iOS too much and am too invested in it so I'll be holding on to my trusted iPhone 4 until the next release.... first time I ever skip an iphone release :(
