Guess what - Americans with college degrees(non-liberal arts) are almost fully employed still.

It petrifies me to think of prospective college students (or their parents) not considering a liberal arts education because of the economy. I wonder how important the people at Apple feel the arts are.

Studying English Lit for four years was the best decision I ever made in my life, and changed my analytical and critical thinking processes forever. I attribute starting and running a successful small business despite a difficult economy to it.

I understand you're not belittling the course of study. I just felt I had to add my two cents.

Looking forward to the 5!

Cheers.

notice that Holland is (slightly) above the USA. In the "Quality of life index" list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality-of-life_Index) the USA is at 13 and Holland is at 16 (this is a "subjective" list).
First of all, don't believe everything you find on Wikipedia. As others have already pointed out, each country / region / continent has it's advantages and disadvantages... there are definitely good things about the USA, but we can surely find bad things as well, same goes for Europe ( or individual countries from Europe ), Asia and so on.

I believe that if you are happy with your lifestyle ( no matter the name or geographic location of the place ) and you like your surroundings, then that's the most important thing! "Happiness" is measured / perceived differently by each individual... just stick to the general idea than trying to waste time convincing others that "yeah, but my place is definitely better!" ( it won't work... you won't convince anyone, you'll only start endless and many times quite senseless debates; but if you don't believe me, then just continue on with that attitude and you'll sooner or later discover the truth yourself )

These being said, I am also looking forward to putting my hands on a possibly redesigned iPhone, but even if that won't happen, I will most likely be quite happy with the same design but with upgraded hardware ( and maybe some actual fixes for the antenna issues and not just cheap workarounds with rubber cases ). Beside the iPhone, I am really looking forward to a possible iPad 3 this year ( or in a more realistic manner: early next year ) and a Macbook Pro upgrade with the upcoming Ivy Bridge processor ( and maybe an even better graphic card and a few more things ).

Best regards from Switzerland! :)

PS: For the guys debating which profession is the best: You should seriously try spending your free time with better things that struggling to come up with a list of "the best professions". Just be happy that you can wake up each day and do the things you really love doing ( just for the record: I am a Software Engineer myself, but seemingly a somewhat more "enlightened" one than quite a few others ).

I wonder why 2-8 million people migrate to the USA every year (small sample, it only covers the past 50 years) while between 0 and 200,000 people migrate to the Netherlands annually.

Probably because everything is so much better in Holland.

Last year 100K moved to Holland, and 5 million moved to the USA.

That's a lot of people voting with their feet. The USA has a LOT of problems, but it remains one of the greatest generators of wealth and living standards in the history of the world. Holland is unlikely to ever join that list.

Yes but how many of them are your southern cousins walking over that porous border ! :D

Nice. I'm also an engineer, i just need a piece of paper to prove it.

But Engineering, Business, Medicine, Law are the top 4 careers. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I'll happily correct you even though it's only opinions at stake - I'd put anyone to do with education in that list - especially teachers.

Pretty normal do block vacations. I have my vacations blocked whenever I want to take them on the verge of a release here in The Netherlands

yeh, his argument was pretty terrible from the start; comparing immigration numbers between a country of 6 million versus 300 million.

and then you basically killed it...

Just going to point out if you look at the top 10 degrees in demand engineers dominated by a long shot and have for a while. The non engineering degrees you see that hold strong are Computer Science, Economics, and Management information systems.
It pretty much math science degrees are the most in demand and safe to bet always will be. Reason for it is those degrees are hard and have well below the college average graduations rate. I would not be surprised in the least to see the numbers at below 40% for math science degrees for the people who start in them to those who finish. Engineering has an insane attrition rate. Simple fact is relatively few people can cut it in those majors.
I also know for engineering there is a shortage of people in the programs as there are not enough people in the programs to replace the ones who are leaving the field much less account for growth.

There will be a pre ordering page on both AT&T, and Apples store page. Apple always provides it's own stores with more units just a heads up. However last year was a fiasco with preordering and it took me from 5AM-9AM just to get my preorder in with Apple.

Thank you!! :D

Have you ever considered that you're probably doing something wrong? I have never heard of so many replacements for a phone, let alone the iPhone 4. The build quality is very good and on par with previous iPhones. What, may I ask, were these 'errors'? Perhaps refurbished models aren't the best replacements either.

If they came from the Genius Bar they might not have been refurbs in the first place.

I know of several stores that are very quick to swap phones for any problems even if it could be software and nothing is wrong with the phone. They do it in part because those appointments are supposed to be no more than 10 minutes. They do their little diagnostic thing cause apparently the system freezes until they do it and then swap it. They don't restore the software, try a hard reboot or anything. Just swap. So it is possible that some of those phones were fine and it was software issues no one bothered to sort out

Move outside America, get better vacations.

Yeah... My company's employee in eastern Europe get 6 weeks, even for new hires.

So our junior devs have less responsibilities and more vacation time than our North American senior devs... on the verge of breakdowns (someone's gotta compensate)... (myself included)

The only reason I never moved to the USA. I like my vacations. :)

Apple does state that its devices are the crossroads of the liberal arts and engineering, but it is the engineering and science that deliver these wonderful devices. The liberal arts are a waste of time and money for the vast majority of students given the cost of college these days. It may be effective for a small percentage, but that percentage is much less than STEM degrees.

I have a daughter in high school, and my wife & I have put our foot down about what we will pay for when she goes to college. It must be in STEM or she's on her own. Is it cruel or mean spirited? Sure it might be, but she'll thank us later for not standing in line at the local soup kitchen.

all these hype just for an "S" ???

Why is this post getting negative? I assume it's pointing out the obvious - that it's not an S. Nobody holds a speed bump for an S release.

Ah, but when she fails at something she felt forced into, well, guess who will get blamed? It's a two way street. It's all going to be on you either way. Not the best idea in my book. It's the equivalent of saying you won't pay for her wedding unless she chooses someone you approve of.

Failing is a good thing, that is how you learn. The math based sciences have very clear quantitative bench marks. You can't move ahead in them if you fail to understand a topic. If you fail to understand a topic, you repeat again until you understand. Its that simple. If you don't know how to multiply, you learn again and over again until you understand. It takes time, but its better than being unemployed. You can't ************* your way in to a topic based on subjective evaluation as you would find in the liberal arts.

Any one else with Verizon notice this?

I have an iphone 4, right next to the image of my phone on MY VERIZON it says Upgrade available 10/15/2012 (Coincidence?)

As much as I hope it is the iPhone launch. Isn't it also possible it may just be the launch for iCloud and iOS5? I think it would be pretty smart for apple to release iOS 5 ahead of the iphone 5, even if it was just a week or 2 before.

Simply so they can sort out the first pane of bugs and problems, and have a much smoother iPhone launch. Not to mention, the more manufacturing time the better, thanks to the sprung demand, that needs to be fed before the holiday season arises.

Happy x apple employ
