im on ATT myself and my bill along with my wifes no data plan phone is $205/month. my buddy has 2 unlocked iPhones one for him and one for his wife and they run on our local Bell provider with unlimited everything for $125/month.

$80/month or more savings may be why some people choose to unlock.

he doesnt care about visual voicemail and although his internet is much slower all of his apps work and he is able to use MMS with no problems.

???

$160 a month gets me:
  • 4 lines
  • iPhone Data Package
  • 750 Anytime Mintues
  • Unlimited nights/weekends starting at 7 PM
  • Unlimited SMS/MMS
And that is after tax. You mean to tell me you are paying $45/mo MORE than me for less lines and no data? Strange.

That's why apple is never going to get more market share, they have a tough nonsense controlled environment. It is crazy.

You assume that Apple wants more. Stop and consider that it was lack of share that got Psystar's anti-trust claims tossed. if Apple goes after majority market power and stomps out Microsoft etc, any hardware/software tying becomes abuse and welcome back clones -- something Apple does not want. there could be similar issues in the phone realm

And you would have to buy a full-priced iPhone to do it. I don't get it.

actually you don't.

you are totally able to walk in and sign up with a brand new phone number and get the phone. the trouble is that you then have cancel and pay the ETF, the activation fee and the first month. so in the end you only save maybe $50-60.

as for who is to blame that push isn't working on unlocked phones. why not talk to the guys that created the illegal hack. maybe, just maybe, they F'd it up when they wrote the hack and Apple didn't have to do anything. such is the risk when you are playing with things you shouldn't be.

Actually, if I get an app off of Apple's App store, I am paying Apple 30%. It's not just hardware, it's a service. If Apple isn't providing that service, then I'd think that's in violation of the contract, and opening themselves up to a suit.

you would think., and certainly on a legit phone, bought at a proper retail location with a proper contract and serviced by ATT with no unlocks or jailbreaks applied, if a service didn't work, Apple would be culpable should the lack of said service be due to something they did or failed to do.

HOWEVER. if said phone was, as is the case here, tampered with in violation of the user agreement. and in fact potentially in violation of several US laws, then all bets are off if a service no longer works. including 'the bet' of getting your phone serviced or replaced should it stop working during the warranty period.

I don't get why people are so jealous of those of us who choose to Unlock/JB and use an iPhone on a different carrier to save hundreds of dollars.

I completely understand that not all features will work correctly (visual voicemail, Push, etc.) but I don't complain about it, I'm just thankful to the smart people who figure out a way to fix the "broken" features. :)

I don't think apple is doing good in this point. Many uses unlocked iphone2 because apple do not accept all networks. Then peoples from networks not supported by iphone can't use it?Thats a bad thing.Blocking push notification what is their profit?I m really disappointed.

I believe he has several iphones, not 1 iphone and 3 other dummy phones.

Hi,

I had a JB'd and unlocked phone. Push didn't work.

Now in the UK O2 have allowed people to officially unlock their phones. This process is 100% legit and done bythe network and via iTunes. I've been through the process, which involved restoring to a 'normal' iPhone OS.

However, NotifyMe is still saying that Apple's Push servers are not responding.

Doe this make any sense to anyone here?

I always though that if you Restore your phone with an unalduterated OS then it acts just like it would if you;d never gone near the whole jailbreak process...

Slightly annoying as the unlock process caused all sorts of authorisation issues with allmy apps -something that was only resolved by downloading most of them again... so that'll be 60+ levels of Geared that I'll need to get through to get me back to where I was :( And the main reason I went legit with an official unlock (at a cost of £15) was so I wouldn't have a hacktivated phone and would be able to get Puish Notifications!!!

It does not matter what they do because as much as I like Apple there will always be someone who will create a jailbreak to address what ever they try to limit. They need to drop the deal with At&t. I have an unlocked phone,2 of them and could care less about the 3G speed. They should have release with verizon first and it seems they are working in that direction now and I would consider that if it happens. But for now I will stick with tmobile cus where i live atleast it works.

Thanks for the input, but this thread is about blocked Push Notifications.

Are you able to provide knowledge (rather than opinion) on this?

Thanks

That's one way to cut down on the amount of unlocked iPhones.

Why? Not everyone lives in the US you know. In the UK, O2 are releasing unlock codes to Apple that work through iTunes, meaning I am running factory firmware, fully unlocked.

If Push notifications don't work on that I will be very annoyed with Apple and O2 as this phone is not jailbroken.

Why are you replying to my comment from six months ago? In that span of time the situation which you are describing has become possible. At the time I posted the comment it was not. I in no way am a US centric poster and am quite well aware of other countries outside the US.

I think there was a bit of Necrobump confusion. :p

@ TWHH

Why not make a new post on your issue in the iPhone Tips, Help and Troubleshooting board?

I'm sure the people here would be able to help a bit more in that forum.

All sorted. Needed to do a restore as a new phone, rather than from a backup.

All fully legit with Push working well so far (tested with Notifyme).

Although I loved the feeling of getting around the loopholes it feels good to be rid of the Cat and Mouse game played between clever hackers and restrictive Apple. PAYG phones should never be locked. I understand it for subsidized contract phones, but there is no logic to it for PAYG. O2 got zero airtime revenue from me, but I had to have a phone that I could have bricked or may have been compromised.

Arh, that's all behind me now :)

yeah but you have the lowest family plan you can get.

Chances are the guy has a higher requirement for minutes and needs more. To get unlimited minutes on ATT family it cost 200 a month. Then you have to start putting on all the extras after that.

Rodimus, it's a trap!

(In case you hadn't realised this is a really old thread and he posted that July 14th, 2009,) :D
