Read: In 1970, under company president Charles Peter McColough, Xerox opened the Xerox PARC (Xerox Palo Alto Research Center) research facility. The facility developed many modern computing technologies such as the graphical user interface (GUI), Laser printing, WYSIWYG text editors and Ethernet. From these inventions, Xerox PARC created the Xerox Alto in 1973, a small minicomputer similar to a modern workstation or personal computer. This machine can be considered the first true Personal Computer, given its versatile combination of a cathode-ray-type screen, mouse-type pointing device, and a QWERTY-type alphanumeric keyboard. But the Alto was never commercially sold, as Xerox itself could not see the sales potential of it. It was, however, installed in Xerox's own offices, worldwide and those of the US Government and military, who could see the potential. Within these sites the individual workstations were connected together by Xerox's own unique LAN, The Ethernet. Data was sent around this system of heavy, yellow, low loss coaxial cable using the packet data system. In addition, PARC also developed one of the earliest internetworking protocol suites, the PARC Universal Packet.

In 1979, Steve Jobs made a deal with Xerox's venture capital division: He would let them invest $1 million in exchange for a look at the technology they were working on. Jobs and the others saw the commercial potential of the WIMP (Window, Icon, Menu, and Pointing device) system and redirected development of the Apple Lisa to incorporate these technologies. Jobs is quoted as saying, "They just had no idea what they had." In 1980, Jobs invited several key PARC researchers to join his company so that they could fully develop and implement their ideas.

The Xerox Alto workstation was developed at Xerox PARC In 1981 Xerox released a system similar to the Alto, the Xerox 8010 Star. It was the first commercial system to incorporate technologies that have subsequently become commonplace in personal computers, such as a bitmapped display, window-based GUI, mouse, Ethernet networking, file servers, print servers and e-mail. The Xerox 6085 Star, despite its technological breakthroughs, did not sell well due to its high price, costing $16,000 per unit. A typical Xerox Star-based office, complete with network and printers, would have cost $100,000.

In the mid 1980s, Apple considered buying Xerox; however, a deal was never reached. Apple instead bought rights to the Alto GUI and adapted it into to a more affordable personal computer, aimed towards the business and education markets. The Apple Macintosh was released in 1984, and was the first personal computer to popularize the GUI and mouse amongst the public.

Like I said Apple paid for use there technology. They didn't pull a Samsung (stealing there technology without asking)

What about when Apple did "steal technology" ?

- Visual Voice mail settlement with Klausner
- Multiple PMP UI concepts settlement with Creative Labs

Seriously, it's not "stealing". Patent infringement is not theft, it's patent infringement. It doesn't require direct or indirect copying either. You can infringe a patent without even knowing about it or the product built from that patent.

No again, you really need to rethink how all of this works. Apple is neither ahead nor behind. They have different priorities than other players. Pretty much all of them move at the same pace on average.

Exactly! This!

And what about all the features Apple stole from Windows ? Filesystem ACLs, pre-emptive multi-tasking, multi-user preferences/accounts, privilege seperation, multi-threading, asynchronous operations, distributed single sign-on, etc.. etc..

(I know... I know... none of that crap actually comes from Windows, just trying to humor the guy's positiion...).

Apple is also leading they way in where the personal computer goes such as abandoning CD/DVD drive in there laptops. Just like how they abandoned the floppy drive in late 90s.

The same its predesessors could. It works. Something most (90%+) of Android devices can not do. And people pay for that. And stay loyal by the product.

If 90% of Android devices did not work, Android would have disappeared ages ago from the market. Android devices work just fine, hyperbole is not really a useful debating tactic, it just makes your argument sound too weak to stand on their own.

Err... no, they aren't. Apple aren't the first company to ship a laptop without an optical drive. They won't be the last either.

Why do you refuse to see the whole industry is basically pretty much neck and neck ? What is so wrong with simply admitting is running in the pack ? It changes nothing to their successes and failures, why do you refuse to see reality and try to keep making up bland excuses ?

I just don't understand what you would lose from facing up to reality here...

This one made me laugh, and at the same time cry as I have to get adapters.

Actually - I've bought iPhone 3 -> 4S (every model) on day #1.

The only reason I'm going to wait this year is to wait until all the funky new (camera, DVI, charger etc) connectors are in stock.

Not being able to buy third party adapters may have me waiting a long time :(

Please, people: There / their / they're. Some of you make decent points, but you literally sound like illiterate morons in the process.

nevermind

Nit picking tech specs is pointless.

Which one is better: the Galaxy S3 or the iPhone 5? it’s really all about personal preference! Two Great phones, roll with the one that puts a smile on your face

What I'm trying to say is whatever Apple does the industry tends to follow Apple. They might be up there with Apple par for par but you got to remember Apple paid the way for the online music store industry. Then portable MP3 player(ipod) Then the portable tablet (iPad) and I can go on and on. It's this simple, before the iPad did Samsung, Asus have a tablet? No. When iPad came out it change the whole game for computer makers. Now everyone has a tablet. And you can say I like the Asus tablet over the iPad but you gotta remember if the iPad never came out Asus would of never came out with a tablet

I know it's an attempt at a humor but Samsung Android phones are actually the ones less alike to the iPhone 5's longer display than other Android makers'. It's because Samsung's Android phones tend to be less oblong than others in the aspect ratio. HTC and Motorola have many qHD phones that are 16:9 in ratio. Sometimes the fact gets in the way of (bad) humor.

Now imagine if only Apple and AT&T's sites weren't unresponsive for the first 10 minutes or so.

The shipping times on Apple's site got pushed back to 2 weeks within the 1st hour - not after a few hours as some have suggested. I was up and was going to pre-order two that would have been "guaranteed" to receive on the 21st, but when the in-store pickup option was greyed out and unavailable, I canceled the order. I hate getting stuff shipped to me, I'm either never home for the shipments and constantly miss them, or the item never comes on time (I have the worst luck).

I am not going to be waiting on lines, that's just ridiculous. Why can't any tech company get their sh:apple:t together and actually have a decent supply whenever there is a release to at least come close to meeting demand... Xbox360, every single iPhone release, etc. I just hope that because I want a 64GB black model, that the demand is low enough for me to snag one launch day without camping out.

I agree, if it were not for Apple people would still be using Motorola Razr flip phones.

I will never buy android because as the doctor says "using an apple device every day keeps the robots at bay" or something like that

Ironically, the new cable is one of the features I anticipate the most. Plugging in your iPhone to a car USB adapter while driving was so difficult to do. Now this problem is solved.

Hang on, one end is lightning and the other end is USB. How it that easier? of did you mean plugging your phone into the old 30 pin connector? Then yeah the lighting would be easier.

Either way, I would recommend not plugging in anything, easy or hard while driving. Do it at the lights :)

Oh, bull. If this is true, then Apple marketing is totally inept at sales forecasting.

This is an intentional marketing ploy, intended to build the buzz and get more media space about how great the iPhone5 is. It's all geared toward making people salivate over this phone and instilling a sense of urgency in them to go buy it. Marketing 101, people.

This nonsense from Apple about underestimating initial demand for products is REAL tiresome.

Yeah no product has ever far exceeded sale demands expectations
