Honestly, what do we expect? This isn't just a problem for Apple. It's universal, and relating to all tech companies at the moment. But that doesn't mean innovation is dead and that it's up to any one company to revive it.

People expect too much.

There comes a point where there's a standstill for innovation until the rest of the world catches up. I think there are more important things to focus on than just revolutionary new products that aren't ready for their time.

I agree. Why does everybody need a new world changing tech gadget every 3 months. I've been so happy with my Apple products that yearly upgrades are perfect. Apple just taking near perfect items and making them better. That keeps me happy.

I agree with the Board of Directors. There has been nothing *phenomenal* from Apple recently, at least not at the pace other smartphone and PC manufacturers have put out groundbreaking products.

You are talking about the super cool IR blasters that come with Android now, aren't you. Can't wait to not use that.

Cook is a CEO, a maintenance guy. He keeps things moving forward. Jobs was the inspiration for the innovation. Apple needs to find that again but not immediately. Cook can consolidate. He has the teams that can get products to the peak of robustness. iPhones that are real world tough. MacOS and iOS union so there is just one AppleOS which will run all legacy software - we need compatibility to support access to our data, our iLife, to do our work.

Later Apple can make great leaps of innovation, which was all really evolution, not revolution. What they need to do is stop wasting time on glimmer.

You can't discount the fact that part of the expectation and anticipation about new products form Apple are fed right here one the rumor sites. There's so much disappointment with every new Apple announcement that it didn't live up to the expectations of the rumor mill. This is an extension of that. Now, if you will excuse me, I have some more rumors to read. :)

"sources are telling the Fox Business Network, about the pace of innovation over at Apple."

I'm gonna call shenanigans on this rumour.

Yes a bit too convenient that the wording basically mimics what all these financial analysts and tech pundits have been saying. Certainly wouldn't be difficult for someone in the analyst community to start a rumor like this. Lets not forget the rumors earlier this year that Tim Cook's job was allegedly on the line.

But I've no doubt most of the post here will be Apple can't innovate, Apple is doomed, Cook needs to be fired, etc.

Asking Tim Cook to innovate is like asking Steve Jobs to run Worldwide Operations.

Yup. Steve Jobs was truly a jack of all trades but not necessarily a master of finances and operations. This is why Tim Cook could have been the only successor for him. You'll find more people like Tim Cook in the world then you will Steve Jobs, but thankfully Cook understands Apple and has kept it going strong.

I'm sure Bob Mansfield is collaborating and focusing on the next great Apple product now and we'll have this question answered by the end of 2014. After iOS 7 though, it's hard not to give Jony and co. the benefit of the doubt.

I agree that innovation takes time. However remember when the iPod, iPhone and iPad came out they completely redefined the categories and everyone struggled to keep up.

Now there is competition that meets or exceeds Apple in many areas. Sure it took android years but its now a very very viable competitor. Apple had the luxury of virtually zero competition for the first couple years of both "modern" smart phones and tablets.

So yeah there is cause for some minor concern but that's all at this point.

What other tech companies are revolutionizing the world with their products?

Was about to say, what groundbreaking products have been released in the past couple of years?

- better camera, nice but not world beating
- bigger screen? Ooh, innovative, not
- tile based interface? Lol
- glasses? Interesting idea, but not a must have

The BOD may correctly be worried that it might not be Apple that puts out the next great thing, but it hasn't happened yet.

iPhone 2007

iPad 2010

Where was all the screaming and gnashing of teeth between those years?

No one had any clue about the iPhone and iPad before release date so all of you haven't a clue of what Apple has up it's sleeve.

But I'm assuming the Board of Directors know what they have up their sleeve. So if they're worried, then it's probably bad...

Sadly no compelling new products (that we know of) are in the pipeline. Nothing that will have a huge impact like the iPhone and iPad did.
Yeah because everyone knew about the iPhone and iPad in 2004.

True. And it was almost six years between the iPod and the iPhone. We have no idea what's in the pipeline. This story seems like a fantasy made up by a bored blogger.

unfortunately for people looking for something bigger than iPhone or iPad, it's just not going to happen for a while. For crying out loud the iPhone and iPad (or iPhone and iPad like devices) is slowly replace replacing traditional consumer level computers. If you think innovations like that comes along every 3 years, then you are crazy.

the problem with Apple is that they always wanted to release a product and make a fortune with it as long as possible

but nowadays, customers are no longer willing to purchase the same stuff during a long period of time

apple has now the pressure to keep up with new and better technologies arriving every year

just having a minor speed bump of the processor every 9 month is not just enough now

they did that with the MBP during a few years before the retina display arrived

IF is a pretty big word. What track record does this guy or Fox Business have when it comes to Apple rumors?

One reason I dislike publicly traded companies. Armchair CEO's? Sounds accurate.

"We need to meet our numbers so we can pay the shareholders who care only about profit. If not, we cut, cut, CUT!! Faster, cheaper, better, more, now!"
-- Said a privately held company NEVER.

Don't think private companies are lazy that's not what I'm saying. Rather, private companies don't have to listen to anyone but their customers and employees.

they havent put out anything truly "new" since the ipad... just product updates and refreshes with updated internals. we've got the mac pro coming up, but its a niche product.

meanwhile, we continue to see multiple gaffes, outages, and legal letdowns or defeats, and news report after news report of their eroding market share in the mobile space. its understandable that the board is asking Cook and his team to demonstrate what exactly they have been doing with themselves.

not saying apple is doing anything wrong per se, but its a logical reaction from a business standpoint.

They mustn't rush. Innovation takes time. I feel like there's a bit of a lack of innovation in the technology industry as a whole right now, but if hey think about it long and hard they'll come up with something decent.

We're being told that Google's more innovative because they have Google Glass and encourages Samsung to create phones with 10" screens.

IMO Apple is still on top of innovation, but it is a fear that they could run out of awesome ideas.
