Tim Cook is deluded if he thinks a single $600 phone design per year is enough to keep Apple relevant. Apple needs a phone with a larger screen and a phone at the $300 price point. Their current trajectory is plummeting towards single digit market share like a rock. Apple has the largest valuation of any corporation, gobs of cash, and they can only design one phone per year? Ridiculous.

Most "innovation" is beta testing stupid ideas

Seriously.

Apple has executed, for the most part, finished products. They do not innovate for innovation's sake. What has put Apple apart from others is the ability to slog through with iterations until something truly innovative does happen.

Innovation for innovation's sake sounds like a board room of business executives, not innovators.

I agree it is past time for Apple to have a range of phones, not just two older models discounted. They need to do to iPhone what they did with iPod and fast.

Again – most innovation out there is features for features sake. Not features that are truly innovative or truly needed or understood by consumers.

To lead in the Apple way is frustrating and always on the brink of failure.

true story or not, i somewhat agree with it. apple isn't "doing well". apple is heading in the same direction that it was after the first time they fired jobs. they've not released anything new in years. just minor tweaks/updates to their current products.

Anyone here complaining about innovation and crying because Apple has not yet created a phenomenal phone that could shave your *-* while you sleep or project hologram videos that will impress your girlfriend should take a moment to go out and live more like a human. Not only it's ridiculous to demand innovative and super wow products but also indicates that you are like desperate spoiled children who just want pass their time with some more impressive toys.

Our life is already flooded with unnecessary needs and apps and all you do is ask for more. I am not saying it s not nice to have devices like the ones we have now, but asking for more innovate my *-* gadgets tends to be paranoid.

I agree....

"sources are telling the Fox Business Network, about the pace of innovation over at Apple."

I'm gonna call shenanigans on this rumour.

As a fan of both Fox News and Apple (I know, it's kind of like dividing by zero), I do have to admit it seems Fox reports a lot of negative Apple news. Such as this: http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2013/08/08/iphone-sinks-as-android-seizes-market-share/

Which we here know is crap reporting because Apple still maintains a very good share in developed (i.e. profitable) contries.

I wish I knew why Fox takes this route with Apple.

I wouldn't be certain of that at all, especially certain secret projects. Possible, but certainly this type of behavior would not be appropriate at all by a board member. I serve on a board and if I publicly disclosed something like this I would be ousted immediately.

If whoever outed this story is working on dumping his portfolio and run, that should not be a problem.

iRadio? Hasn't even launched, already irrelevant because there are far better services out there which offer more control + social capabilities.

Mavericks isn't really amazing. Missed opportunity there.

rMBP? Underpowered and not ready for prime-time.

Real AppleTV? That's Bigfoot.

I agree on some points, but others are a bit dramatic. I personally own a rMBP (13") and could never move to another (lower resolution) laptop. Being able to switch from 1280x800 while browsing to 1680x1050 for working and still have everything be pin sharp is amazing. Do note I write code most of the day, but I also use it for light video editing and Photoshop.

Mavericks is also a huge step up if you use multiple monitors like me. Also finder tabs (I end up having 5-6 finder windows open at all times, super cluttered for expose.) The behind the scenes features are quite amazing as well and should provide even better battery life/efficiency for older hardware (That supports it, of course )

iRadio is actually quite good, and will be putting Pandora out of business. Sure it doesn't compete with Rdio/Spotify but it is way cheaper for those who just want to put on a radio station and not mess around with playlists all day (Disclaimer: I subscribe to Rdio.)

The Apple TV is so close to being a really great product - the hardware has everything it needs, but it will require a huge software overhaul. Keep airplay as it is the primary selling point of the device right now. Integrate controls with iOS - I don't want to have to search for the Remote app on my phone.

The biggest feature they need: Allow Siri on people's iOS devices to interface with the living room apple TV. I should be able to search all available content on the device just using my iPhone's siri implementation, and then be able to play it without touching a device.

I think the main issue is that the board/analysts are looking for the next big hardware advance from Apple and they have been stagnant there. The iPad was introduced just 3 years ago, so judging on their past product launches they are coming due for a new category. The question is whether it will be another iPad level success or a Rokr level failure.

Competition
The Nexus 7 is getting good reviews and has forced a Retina iPad mini update. Android itself is getting "good enough" and Google is starting to take a more active role which will make the platform stronger.

They still haven't cracked online in any meaningful way. And forget about social.

Incremental innovation
The move to subscription music pricing is something Apple is missing the boat on - I went Spotify and just can't even imagine going back to buying music.

They spent too long treating AppleTV as a hobby and are about to have their legs cut out from under them by Google, and even if it doesn't, they basically have stiff competition in a low-margin area.

Transformational innovation
Google Glass is at least an attempt at changing the computing paradigm. Leap is also doing interesting things. Amazon has Liquavista displays in the wings which will change tablet computing again potentially.

So there is a mix of competitors catching up, incremental innovation going on, and transformational stuff waiting in the wings and Apple doesn't seem to be positioned against any of it. If I was the Board, I'd be worried too. They have enormous goodwill built up that could get them through for a bit, but they have been sitting on massive capital while having obvious areas of weakness that suggests willful blindness.

You've brought up some excellent points. Other than having their minds bogged down with all this negative energy that surrounds the law suits and related buzz, I do wonder why Apple is acting like General Motors in denial. All talk and nothing released is not a great strategy. Yet mislead by their own ego, they must be convinced they are invincible. Believing they know better than anyone else, it is fun to watch this play out. No longer the only game in town when it comes to mobile devices, at least now we have many great Android devices to enjoy while we wait for Apple to have the baby...

Look for disruption if you want to find innovation. Google is extremely good at this and is willing to disrupt industries even if they don't know how to make money off it (IE Android). All of MS's moves in different markets as of late have been all about disruption, mostly because they're now playing from behind and status quo will kill them. Amazon is very good at disruption - online retail, cloud services, budget tablets - all markets they've blown up. Meanwhile Apple hasn't done anything except maintain status quo with marginal improvements over the last couple product cycles.

Sure I can see a lot of disruption, but does it really make them money & is it really innovative?

We already know how Microsofts disruption is doing to them.

Amazon has been doing well. But I do see its Fire HD tablets as not up to expectations for the general public. Losing money off of its tablets to try to make up by services. Then try to slip in some ad's later on when that was not working.

Google was hoping to put its ad's and services on Android to make money that way. But it still makes much more money off of Apples iOS then it ever did with Android.

You think by doing anything, is good enough. Apple is not just going to do something haphazardly just to see what sticks on the wall. They have a plans that sometimes takes years to set up.

Omg.. From Fox news!
Who gives a **** about what they say!?

Macroumors hit an all time low on this one.

Last REAL innovation was the iPhone. That changed an entire industry, if not our communication habits as well. Before that - the iPod, with the same effect, entire music industry was affected. So, it takes time but I admit that I am a bit worried too, now innovation seems to be an iPhone a few units larger than before or an iPad a bit smaller then before... The Google glasses should have come from Apple...

Honestly, I don't think the iPad was so "groundbreaking". Call it what you want, but it was (and is) basically a large iPod touch. It's what the people did with it and how they used it that made it become so special.

Before Apple products would stay the same for year. Now, people expect a revolution faster than products used to get revised.

... solution is about as good as its going to get.

That's the kind of BS I hear at my job all the time. I really don't think Apple works like that.

Anyway, this "report" sounds like BS to me, and even if there is a grain of truth to it, it's still BS. It's barely been 4 years since iPad and the competition is still playing catch-up. It's going to take another 5 years for the competition to catch up to the new MacPro. Apple is chugging along just fine.

The Google glasses should have come from Apple...

I disagree, and don't think they ever would have. Apple is a very introverted company, and they make products that are very personal. Google Glass is very extroverted, public, and let's be honest, a little obnoxious. I don't see a product like that coming from Apple. But then again, I've been way wrong before.

Apple's not usually known for releasing to market products most people won't buy. Google Glass is nothing more than geek porn for guys at The Verge to get off on. And the list of places where it's being banned keeps growing.

Apple's not in trouble because they lack technological innovation. They're in trouble because they lack market innovation. They're so focused on the profitable customers they already have that they have neglected the area where the market is growing. GM is the 70's is an apt metaphor. GM was so focused on selling high margin Buicks and Caddies to old guys that they didn't want to market quality small cars that had low margins. Honda Civics and Toyota Corrolas won a lot of fans with their quality while GM build crappy "penalty boxes" so they didn't cannabalize their profitable bigger cars. 20 years later all those kids who bought the little japanese cars are drivinf Lexus and Acuras and GM goes bankrupt.

That's where Apple is sitting right now. They're afraid that fielding a $300 iPhone will cannabalize their $600 premium iPhone with crazy good margins. You know what, it will. But if they don't cannabalize themselves, somebody else will (or already has). That's the law of the jungle.

Talking about new casing for iPhone not new then all cars not new just because they redesigning the body . This is no making sense. Give us a new look. We tired same old
