White/Silver are seeing constraints as well. Was told while waiting in line at the Lake Grove, NY Apple Store that White and Gold models are in extremely limited supply, wouldn't be surprised if white/silver models slipped to october as well.

How does WSJ know what Apple is doing?

The WSJ is one of Apple's preferred sites for controlled leaks. Now that Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher are leaving AllThingsD and News Corp, it remains to be seen if that will continue, but since they have been there the Journal has never been wrong about an Apple "rumor."

I suspect that with Mossberg and Swisher leaving, the quality of WSJ's Apple reporting is going to take drastic turn downward.

Once the two of them can say who they are going to, I guess we'll know where to head to next for reliable Apple leaks.

I placed an order immediately after the Apple Store went live at midnight. The site said "Delivery 1-3 Business Days" when I ordered, and said that in the sidebar as I completed the order.

When the order was completed, the receipt says "Delivery 7-10 Business Days". I'm really annoyed that they're pulling this kind of nonsense. I wanted the phone for a business trip overseas (I ordered the unlocked version) and now I've been screwed by them..

Steve wouldn't let this happen. . .

and none of this is your fault for counting on a quick delivery in time for a business trip? Of course not, blame Apple.

Since you know Steve so well, why didn't he tell you to make better decisions?

How does WSJ know what Apple is doing?

Also WSJ's Walt Mossberg was a close friend of Steve. They would often go for a walk in Steve's neighbourhood.
I'm pretty sure Walt has a great connection with Tim, cause of his relationship with Steve before. ;)

A technique as old as the hills, tell you one thing to get your order, then revise it at the end of the process. Apples such a class act :)

They could also charge a premium price as well.

hey dingleberries, this has nothing to do with 'apple being class act' or some kind of anti-nerd-fanboy conspiracy. the supplies are simply limited. when you put it in your cart the numbers were one thing, when you checked out they were another. they can't pin delivery estimates to add-to-cart times otherwise people would add **** and just sit on it for hours while they made up their minds and goofed around. online commerce has always been when you pay, you have your place in line - not when you look at the shelf and tap your finger to your lip and say 'hmmmm'... that's still-thinking time. money where mouth is gets shipping estimate...

part of the game apple does play is where to ship how many units and of what color and config. it's mainly done to supply the demand, as is sensible, but also it's a bit of a gamble and a guess on their part, trying to anticipate the demand. i'm sure they shorted the orders for gold because although it was tracking well they weren't sure how it'd catch on, and having the supply be slightly short is always good for sales, creates a little frenzy. that's the technique that's as old as the hills (of madison avenue). they know what they're doing. just sit back and watch.

What Girl, Woman, Grandmother doesn't like Gold? This is no surprise!

Apples no dummy, they know by keeping supplies low they can create the fear "OMG I may not get one" that's worked for decades in retailing.

People keep saying this until we see the report that they actually sold millions, and that they actually were constrained.

Then the people like you would shut up, and continue this when a new product is launched, and the cycle repeats.

This is a rumour as the WSJ is not Apple. It's very plausible though.
I hate it when people claim non Apple sources as 100% fact.

WSJ = Journalism
Apple = Fact (About Apple that is).

Can't spell it out any clearer than that.

I am a woman and I don´t particularly like gold at all and especially not on my iPhone. My favorite one is the white one. Matter of fact I have yet to upgrade to iPhone 5 because I don´t like the two-toned colours and because I don´t like the larger screen :)

So yeah not all girls go gaga for gold :p

I wonder if Apple might have started production on this color very late in order to avoid leaks. Thereby being alone on the market with this color for a couple of extra months before Samsung, HTC and the likes jump in.

Apple could make an iPhone in **** brown and the masses would still drool

I think it's more a case of the sad bastard few that inhabit forums (myself included) and queue up outside stores (not me!) that get over excited about these things and will accept whatever is thrown at them by their brand of choice.

I saw some people over recent days here dare do as much as say the Photos and Game Centre icons in iOS 7 are a bit crap (which they are), mostly met with replies along the lines of "GO TO HELL YOU PIECE OF **** SCUM, JONY I'VE IS A DESIGN GOD!!!". Funny thing is that if those same icons were mentioned on an Android device the laughter and ridicule here would be immense... :)

It took me a while to find game centre in iOS 7. It really does have absolutely no correlation to what the app is!

In this part of the world, ie. Asia, Africa, Mid East, Gold is highly coveted by everyone. Nokia has had gold (err Champagne) colored phones for a long time, they are incredibly popular.

And it's not "flat" like all the other icons, there's a lot of inconsistency for a new release operating system from one of the biggest and supposedly the best (at this kind of thing) companies - also note the paper background texture in Notes, so they removed skeumorphism to replace it with... more skeumorphism.

The old pictures before release showing the Gold as true Gold was definitely too much bling for me, but after seeing the actual dulled down color it started to grow on me.

I especially like the look of the trim on the front & sides, the back is still just a bit too 'blingy' but i'll most likely have a case hiding it.

Besides I've had black phones for about a decade now. I thought it was time for a change. :)

Yes, it's a cultural thing. I travel to your region of the world. It's incredibly beautiful and people are not as shallow as American consumers can be.

My hunch is they had fractured teams working on things and not the single people managing it to bring the vision all together. I figure it will get tweaked and improved in 7.1.

I admit it seems sloppy at the edges but by and large I'm not unhappy with iOS 7, it just feels a touch rushed.
