There were follow ups to the Tim Cook email by Apple themselves. An Apple spokesman told a Forbes (and NYtimes) reporter that a new Mac Pro is coming in 2013:

Did he not actually say ;
Franz,

Thanks for your email. Our Pro customers like you are really important to us. Although we didn’t have a chance to talk about a new Mac Pro at today’s event, don’t worry as we’re working on something really great for later next year. We also updated the current model today.

We’ve been continuing to update Final Cut Pro X with revolutionary pro features like industry leading multi-cam support and we just updated Aperture with incredible new image adjustment features.

We also announced a MacBook Pro with a Retina Display that is a great solution for many pros.

Tim

It's probably just a 2TB fusion drive, maybe with a 512gb SSD as the flash part.

A 2TB SSD at apples prices would be like....$5,000

Agreed. But who could possibly need more than a fusion drive like you describe? The stuff that you would want to access from a SSD just isn't that large. A huge data file that is some sort of multi-gig item will be all saved in the same place on a spinning drive and will read nice if you want to access that in the normal course. So real world performance between the huge fusion drive you mention and a 2GB SSD shouldn't be very large.

Pretty quick indeed...particularly when one has 200GB worth of memory cards in your bag, so as to avoid running out before getting back to a computer to download. And before anyone starts suggesting "cloud" solutions, best to do the bandwidth calculations: even if we cut it down to a daily load of but 50GB, you're still looking at roughly 10 hours on a 15Mbps fiber/CATV connection ... or around 6 days on DSL.

-hh

A good example of the type of data transfer where sending the hard drive overnight through fed ex might be faster than uploading some files over the internet. How long would it take to send a 3 terabyte file stored on a hard drive over the internet?

He says 50GB daily load. It isn't necessarily one file.

4x2tb SSD´s made by apple. That´s gonna be a cheap machine. we are probably talking at least $15 000 only on the SSD´s alone.

Gee whiz. Another story on the possible Mac Pro to keep folks holding onto that last bit of hope. It's unfortunate that folks NEEDING a Mac Pro get strung along because apple doesn't have the balls to come out and say for sure if it's coming or not. Why the little quip stories. People's livelihoods are on the line. I feel sorry for those hanging on praying for a Mac Pro to keep their business afloat. I know it sucks switching as I did it in 2010. Was a Mac nut, always telling folks Mac is the best platform. I gave up after 10 years of loyalty. As much as I doubt apple will make another one, I hope they do so those who need one can keep their life style going. Good luck.

2 TB SSD?

It could be 4 512 SSDs on raid array. makes my brain hurt of how much it will cost.

What is there to "build"?
Just throw enough flash chips together and there you have it.
Anyone can do it if they think someone will shell out that much cash.

I think this is about a 2TB Fusion drive in the entry level model.

Except most controllers support only 512GB with 64Gb per die (1024GB once 128Gb die comes widely available). It's possible that e.g. Samsung MDX has the ability to support up to 2TB of NAND per controller, although it will still require firmware tweaks since you have more LBAs than before, which affects garbage collection and wear leveling.

More important than what Apple puts inside is when and how often will the next MP product refresh be? They can't wait four years for each refresh, as PCs will put out new models many times in that four - year period.

Really?

So your telling us that 4 x 2 = 8 ? Wow that's just plain genius............ Thanks for clearing that up.... ;)

Congratulations for knowing how many drive bays a Mac Pro has. However, some people don't know this and so this information is useful.

Thunderbolt is DisplayPort + bus (like PCI).

Yes, through there is no video cards currently that support thunderbolt. The new mac pros will need TB on the motherboard. You cannot use a current TB display with a PC like you could use the Mini DisplayPort ones.

Come now... don't make fun of the Samsung users' 'special needs'. ;)

Apple fan boys also need help with counting... Think of them!!! It's not just the Samsung users ;)

I believe it is an understatement to say that such a thing would cost an absolute ton of cash.

No, that's almost certainly an overstatement. Even a ton of pennies is still worth $3,628.74, and the value just increases as you go up in denomination. Even at current flash prices, it will probably only be around $3,000. :p

Anyone looking to spend $3000+ on a MacPro would have done their research (or one would hope)..

Added the fact the MacPro drive capacity for number of drives/bays hasnt changed for years, since the PowerMac G5. So unless you've been ignorant of this for over a decade, fair enough....
