Ah the familiar acrid scent of Apple vapourware.

Not a good look and another pin in the self-inflated balloon of “innovation”. Then again they couldn’t even get a 3-way power charger to work consistently and safely.

Given the barriers here, wouldn’t surprise me if the next gen/non-prototype AVP goes the same way.

Fear not however, all hail the magical Wall-Mounted iPad…errr, sorry iHub.
There’s no vapourware here, because there’s no product. We just have a report* saying that a supposed* project has been cancelled.

Correct

The tech to do this type of product really well ... is quite a ways off yet
"nor was there a front-facing screen showing the wearer's eyes."

This is the and the lack of XR apps are the only road block for apple. Tim has only been showing off immersive videos, so why can't a device like the xreal one pro do that? Xreal one pro demo->

But Meta did it with Orion...so there seems to be a hole in that logic. I'm unconvinced that a Steve Jobs-era Apple would've shelved this project.
Meta’s Project Orion is not shipping, it’s an ~$10k prototype and I am unconvinced—even if they lower the FOV on Orion—Meta can ship a great product for $1-2k.

A prototype does not equal a product and product does not equal a sustainable business. So the tech to do it does exist. Road to making a great product is long.

Correct. Which dovetails into my point. I'm convinced AR smart glasses will be THE next revolutionary product and are probably the most important thing Apple can be working on right now. High product price points haven't stopped them before (see: AVP). If they stop, they will be behind competitors once the tech does exist. They placed a big bet on spatial computing and will lose that bet if they don't follow through on it. People like me won't buy an AVP but we will buy AR or mixed reality glasses.

Unless of course, this rumor is all just bad info and they've simply collapsed the project into part of the AVP team in some way, which is entirely possible.

Jobs shelved iPad in 2003 and asked them to build an iPhone instead. Some of the revisionist history on this site is funny. Jon’s shelved many projects when technology wasn’t ready.

I think "paused" ar glasses' project is more suitable than "cancelled".
They must have paused the research, waiting for suitable tech to be developed.
I bet that whenever that tech will be available to them, they'll resume ar glasses' development.

The touchscreen technology was developed and ready for iPad but the iPhone was more important so Jobs put the iPad aside. Your assertion that tech wasn’t ready for iPad seems to be the revisionist history from what I’ve read.

And remember: Jobs was also famous for pushing people to do what they thought was impossible— which, if this rumor is true, might be what we need more of here.

Glasses... So now Tim Cook is copying Google and Facebook. That's no surprise considering that Cook copied Microsoft by using flat design.

"Can't innovate anymore, my a**!"

Apple had been working on tablets from long before 2003. Jobs revived newton when he was back. Sure it had other factors but jobs didn’t think iPad was ready. And guess what the patents and research for AVp started in 2006-2008, it’s not like Tim Cook gave up. Jobs had more failures, and Tim will have his. I don’t care as long as Apple is trying and shelve if it’s not feasible.
Jon’s should have never given up on social media, or even cloud under him was meh.

We’re debating unconfirmed rumors about in development (or not) vaporware. 🤣 However…

It only took a few years for the iPad to be revived in order to use it for the iPhone. What they needed was a faster ARM chip to power the bigger screen of the tablet. Within a couple years of the 2007 release of the iPhone, because of the progress of that device, they were ready.

Perhaps Apple is relying on the development of future AVP models to develop the tech necessary for future AR glasses. On the other hand, I’m surprised (again, if this rumor is true), because they have the muscle and financial power as a company to lean into suppliers and make the breakthroughs in tech that are needed. But do they have the will?

AR glasses seems to be the most important product they could make if they indeed believe spatial computing is the future.

Time will tell.

Onward and upward!

Great to know that Apple is investing so much time and effort in AR/VR and obviously accumulating critical experience and knowledge in the process. Can’t wait to see the next products in this family!

Ho Hum...

As you well know, Jony Ives (not Cook) wanted the "Microsoft Flat Look" well before Microsoft started it, but that idiot Forstall was in charge before he f'd it up! iOS 6 looked liked trash compared to iOS 7. Thank god he has gone.

First the Apple Car, now this?

What's going to be canceled next? The upcoming Apple Polishing Cloth Pro Max? Rumors are that pro golfer Tiger Woods was spotted surreptitiously polishing his golf club with a prototype of the Polishing Cloth Pro Max, and I would be extremely disappointed if the rest of us don't get to enjoy it as well.

So by your same logic, Windows Phone 7 looks better than iOS 6; and Windows 8 looks better than Mac OS X Mountain Lion, right?

Expecting an AR glass that will work by connecting to an iPhone to be released eventually. Will take a long time. Not expecting to see it in the next 5 years at least.

I mean wireless everywhere one would wear this magical "regular glasses" device. It would need to be as "everywhere" as cell signals or radio.
Magsafe has something like 50% waste over a thin glass backpanel. The electric field gets weaker by the square of the distance. You'd need big ass coils on your thin glasses, and waste 99.99% of the energy.

Seems like a lot of tech innovation is becoming bottlenecked due to lack of battery capacity and size. When’s the next breakthrough in battery tech coming?
I know Dyson were working on a battery breakthrough but they’ve been very secretive about it.

Correct

Depends on what you want to do with it, I tried the x-Real and INMO Air glasses and current tech is not bad at all. Mainly for movie watching (HD content looks great already) but with the Air 2 also side information while driving and the tech should work as a game monitor with look-view but that is not implemented yet. The new version does not need to be wired to a phone and has a few hours of battery.
Maybe Apple stoped developing because the tech is already available.

How to flush money down the drain. This. They Should stop Reaching too far and fire the " inane dreamers". Focus on what the Consumers WANT not what they think they need. How about a NEW Game Console?

I mean, I have to agree--the Mac doesn't have the sales numbers for something like this to catch on.

Their sales numbers rose last year. The m4 has been a champ.

There’s no need to wear stupid 3D glasses anyway. There are 3D displays already which work without glasses. They can be much better though.
