I despise the electric vehicle my wife pushed us to buy. Going on a road trip with it turned 6 hours into 9 hours, having to wait in long lines at charging stations. I’m glad Apple is out of this game and reallocating resources. This vehicle would have been ridiculously expensive anyway, out of the price range for most of us mere mortals.

"But, but, but, there was never any proof Apple was building a car!"

"They hired countless engineers, bought a test track with test vehicles, and bought self-driving permits only to improve CarPlay!"

"It was only a $10 billion pet project with no product in mind."

Goes to show that even Apple can't pull such a monstrous project off with all their money. Shame, I was looking forward to a fresh design take on cars.

They could do it and were on their way. But the recently imposed 100% tariff on EV cars manufactured in China (up from the previous 25%) killed it.

Tough to make a decent business case with that hanging over you.

Creating an Apple Car may have sealed Tim Cook's legacy almost just under at the level of Steve.
Apple Watch, AirPods, Vision Pro, Apple Car.

The whole EV market is crashing, the scam is about to catch up with everyone. There are some good reasons for EV such as city pollution but they’re are not net positive environmentally and not nearly as useful as an ICE vehicle. The battery fiasco is just about to truly start. They should go back to being a niche product without subsidies or quotas.

I understand they can walk and chew gum at the same time, but I’d really wish they’d put the focus squarely on their bread and butter products. Safari is almost unusable on iOS as of late. I’d like them to bring a street view to more cities in maps. Things like that.

Does “all other players” include the auto manufacturers in your estimation.
yes.

As long as Elon believes the FSD system needs data only from cameras, others will surpass what Tesla can offer.

Nope. Lidar is stupid. Lidar requires sensor fusion with vision. Sensor fusion increases latency and noise. Ambiguity increases and when that happens, which sensor do you trust? The answer is vision. Vision is contextually much more data rich than lidar. So it doesn't make sense to add lidar when you fall back to vision anyways.

Try FSD 12.5 and you can easily see vision only is superior

Yea it is a good thing the Apple car was cancelled.

Apple would never have recovered from even a few hundred bricked cars.

Imagine the car sitting in the garage, won't start, won't power up, won't move and Apple says take it to the closest Apple store.

Everything you say almost holds only under ideal conditions for the cameras. Under many real world driving scenarios, cameras-only comes up short. That’s why additional data streams are necessary. Yes, fusion is more complex, but necessary given the implications of even partial failure in this case.

You are not going to get me to try “FSD” any time soon for one very simple reason. It still isn’t “Full Self Driving,” and it won’t be until Tesla is willing to undertake the liability while FSD is engaged. Hence my earlier “snake oil” reference. I’m not in the habit of paying extra for a feature only to be a guinea pig for a corporation.

Gotta love how they wasted billions on this but other products in their line up get completely ignored

Apple is a large company with lots of money and resources. They can be and are involved in several things at once. Spending time and money on "Apple Car" doesn't mean other things were completely ignored.

Not their style, but they should at least sell the intellectual property and research they created to another company so that some good can come out of it.

FYI: Apple cancelled the car project after realizing what Tesla was working on with the robotaxi and the robovan.

All other players in the market are headed towards extinction. Waymo too. Their only hope is to license FSD from Tesla.

Sorry, but it's just facts.
LOL. FSD has been pending forever. Meanwhile existing Tesla vehicles are long overdue for refreshes.

Musk is good at hype. I will give him that.

I am not sure a single Apple employee is a good sample size although I like Scoble. He was less flattering on the robots though.
