What else could they possibly think they're going to contribute other than AI?Who says it will be self-driving? I suspect it won’t be, at least not in 2024.

Also, the car doesn't have an off switch. you gotta put it in a special car cover every nightApple Car Mini: $24,000
Apple Car: $29,000
Apple Car Pro: $38,000
Apple Car Pro Plus: $52,000
Mag Safe Charger for Apple Car sold separately: $25,000
Dongle for Apple Car Charger to work with the global universal standard: $20,000
Have to admit this has been one of the most entertaining threads on MR in a long time. A knee-slapper supreme.
It reminds me when Apple announced the iPhone and the reactions of the breathless, making sure everyone knew how stupid it would be competing against the telecom and handset industry giants of the time, Motorola, Ericsson, and Nokia, collectively known as MEN. Where are they now? Waiting for the reflexive yeah-buts...
Déjà vu all over again!
You spell poorly and you're still wrong.Let me spell it out nice and simple for those who aren't getting my statement that the car industry is now a software industry (which is why TSLA is valued so high).
There's an old saying in software development - "9 women can't make a baby in 1 month".
Apple had been doing software for decades when they got into the phone business.
The market leaders hadn't. They'd just been making phones that were just phones.
They couldn't catch up with Apple because software development is a long and slow process.
Nokia sold its phone business to Microsoft.
Same in the car industry, the market leaders have for nearly a century been kings of mechanical engineering.
Now cars are changing. Engines replaced with batteries and electric motors.
For the likes of GM,Ford,BMW,Merc to catch up with Tesla they'd need to have started developing software 10+ years ago. That's why TSLA is valued ridiculously high on the stock market.
Software is Apple's bread and butter. They've now earned their chops in silicon and have a respected design team.
The other thing you should remember/know about the car industry is that everyone in it buys each others parts.
Tesla's original roadster had a Lotus Elise chassis.
So not having a chassis, wheels etc isn't a block to entry for the likes of Apple.
In fact Apple could just licence its software to the incumbents who Tesla has let behind, I don't think they will, but it is an option.
You remind me of the Blackberry lovers who said "I need a keyboard!"You spell poorly and you're still wrong.
What does the average consumer want in a car?
1) It gets me where I need to go
2) It doesn't break
...
4,983,123) software
It's actually more reasonable to say "we shouldn't touch the software once the car runs"
Your view of the car industry is completely myopic.
Because the iPhone doesn't have a keyboard? You remind me of the Blackberry lovers who said "I need a keyboard!"
BILL GATES designed this NEW BATTERY TECHNOLOGY.
NOT APPLE. Apple is using Bill Gates Battery TECH

Of course it will. Electric cars don’t have engines. The car will come without an engine
Wrong. According to Apple, AirPower was cancelled because it was supposedly too technically difficult to achieve an acceptable product:Of course they could make AirPower. Apple chose not to, likely because of rapid commoditization and downward pricing.
People will buy it for the same reason they buy Tesla's... proof that you have more money than you know what to do with.

Driving to the supermarket gets kind of dull after a while.A self-driving car. Precisely what I have zero interest in.
Wow. You’ve owned a lot of cars for a 34-year old.I used to be excited about the prospect of an Apple Car. As a huge apple fanboy since the late-90s, anything with an apple logo on it I wanted to buy even the market-duds that really weren't sold at a good price or features to penetrate the sector.
But as I get older (34 now) and I have owned more vehicles (400 horsepower hot hatch (Golf R), Corolla, Camry, Faux-UV (ford escape) Wagon (golf estate), maxima and now a Hyundai Ioniq fully electric, I don't think Apple is capable of making a car that will really solve any issues or appeal to the general public.
This car will need to be sub-50K, will need to best Tesla at design, service, support, buying experience and it'll never have Tesla's super charger network and it will need to be flexible enough to not require apple service stations and repairs. Sort of like how I'm glad Apple never tried the MVNO route with iPhone, I'd like / prefer Apple to make a platform and license that to others struggling to compete with Tesla. AppleCar becomes a platform other companies can build on top of with self-driving AI technology and infotainment along with crash test scores & range that better Tesla then we can get the Bolt EV, Ioniq and E-Golf, aka sub-standard RVs onto a platform that allows them to compete with Tesla and for Apple to get their experience in more customer hands without apple having to do any of the 'car things' that they'd have to do.
if Apple can make a platform (hardware & software) and license it out, then they don't have to worry about warranties, support, service, financing, leasing, charging networks. They basically become like Bosch or Denso in that regard.
