In the end, I probably will purchase the AC, but as of right now, I want to exercise all my options and find out why I was told I could keep it, only to have it removed later on.

I'm not sure why you're missing this point - you have no options. Let's think about this 2 ways.

Practically, imagine this full story is on the front page of the Wall Street Journal or Yahoo so your family, friends, co-workers and colleagues read it. Would you still pursue this matter? Or would you realize that you look cheap and ungrateful?

Legally, you are SOL as well. There were 2 mistakes made (whoever activated AC on your serial and Apple agent saying keep it), so Apple's only obligation is to return everything to its condition before the errors. You are there today, i.e. a computer without AC. You suffered no harm from the mistake - this is key - instead, you received unjust benefit. You should be glad they offered you $100 for your trouble, because legally $0 is all they need to offer you. You're not entitled to benefit from a mistake, you're only entitled to be returned to your condition before the mistake.

Here's probably why it took 4 months - 2-3 months after you called, the original person realized his computer did not show AC coverage, called Apple and Apple eventually figures out that while he did buy AC, it is on another machine whose serial is probably 1 character different than yours. He has to send them receipts, UPC code, etc to verify that he actually purchased the product, and it takes Apple time to verify everything before taking AC away from you and onto the rightful machine.

In my defense, when I wrote he should threaten to call his congressman and the better business bureau, I failed to see that he didn't pay for his apple care. I was under the assumption that he had bought it and they cancelled it.

AC absolutely transfers. It's tied to the machine, not the owner.

I sold a mbp with 2 years of apple care left, I called Apple and told them I was selling it and to transfer the coverage to the new owner. I was informed that it wasn't on "me" it was on the machine.

The new owner has already made a claim (I know because my email was still somehow affiliated with the account) and has had it for 2 years now. He made his claim 7 or 8 months after buying it.

I don't know what this "proof of coverage" or "certificate of coverage" is, but I've never gotten one. Maybe the rules are different at Apple Canada vs. Apple America?

My guess is that the actual owner of the AppleCare discovered that they had mis-registered it to a MBP belonging to someone else, and using the AppleCare serial number got Apple to put it on their own MacBook Pro as it should have been from the beginning. Now if Best Buy had given the OP a copy of AppleCare as a buying incentive, etc. that would be a different story. If the OP wants AppleCare they need to purchase it themselves.

OP, ignore all the people on this thread that are calling you names. Basically, you are bummed because an Apple employee told you one thing, and then Apple did another. I don't blame you for that.

You probably won't ever get the answers you seek, but I have a feeling you already know that. Worth a try, anyway.

No one is calling anybody names. We help those who come to this site when there is help to be given. In this case we're telling OP, who understands the situation clearly, that there's really not much he can do.

That makes sense, And I fully understand that. I Think it was handled wrongly though. If I never called in, they would not have notified me. Thats a BIG mistake on their part.

This is not applicable to me since the machine I purchased was Brand New.

No one was calling me names lol. But thanks for coming to my defense!!

Yeah, I know no one was calling you names (at least not with their keyboards). It was just a shortcut way of saying ignore the people who are implying that to be upset about this is wrong, etc. blah, blah, blah, blah.

You bet! :D

Big time agree.

I was about to get into where we would be if you noticed this AFTER your 1 year to buy AC was up, but thankfully we're not there. If that happened and Apple said sorry your year is up no AC soup for you - then you would have suffered damages - and that's a whole new can of worms.

By the way, kudos for seeing this logically and rationally. You can tell there's some posters here that would be doing everything they could to get the free AC back.

Hi, i wasnt hinting that you wouldnt be speaking nicely to them :D

yeah my boss bought a 13" mbp and a 27" imac and im pretty sure with his edu discount on the mac and the AC it worked out about £50 for the AC in the end...

hope you get what you want!

I was never MacBoobsPro, and apparently the 100.00 Off is just the educational discount. Thats what the lady I talked to today said. I was never aware of an EDU discount on apple care though.

how do you know for sure that it was brand new? maybe someone bought the MBP and applecare and then decided they didnt want it and returned to bestbuy and it was really an open box.....

i'm surprised you didn't verify with bestbuy at all in this process.

Big time agree.

It was brand new, I know for sure. First and foremost, the Box was completely sealed. Secondly, the macbook was still in its plastic wrap. And thirdly, I was sold the mac by a friend of mine.

Keep reading the thread, and you'll see he's gone from trying to get the full AC back to where he's ok with anything less given he should be entitled to $0.

Even from the beginning it wasn't about getting the AC back for free. I just want to know why they told me I could keep it, and Id also like to know why I wasn't notified of it being removed until I called in.

I think the simple answer to that is they messed up - especially the first rep. Even with a company like Apple, it happens. At least they acknowledged their error by offering you $100 off. I feel for you, but I'm not sure what else needs to be done/said.

Fair enough, but the discount their offering me isnt anything substantial anyway. Not that I'm trying to get more, but the rep I talked to jsut recently, said that that was the EDU discount cost of AC. So technically anyone can get that. And if thats the case, than I am already entitled to that discount seeing as I am a student.

opps

I misread this. I would just pay for applecare its worth it...You cant loose what you never had :)

No one thinks you're wrong. You were 100 percent right in notifying Apple that there was an error. All we're saying is that you shouldn't be mad or feel ripped off because they took something away that wasn't yours to begin with. If this was a case where you're past being eligible and now you're out of AppleCare then I would be mad but you said you were planning to purchase AppleCare anyway.

This is dumb. Why would you try to argue for something that isn't yours? There is no point in e-mailing Apple and complaining about this unless you really want something for free. If OP was affected in some way, I could understand but this situation has ZERO affect on OP. The computer works and is still eligible for AppleCare that he or she was going to purchase anyway. I can't see any rational person making a big fuss over this. Only a petty person would complain to Apple because there was an error and misinformation given that does not affect them negatively.

just a thought ... maybe they cannot confirm anyone actually said you could keep the AC? ... and their policy is to only offer a discount to keep it on there or remove it totally.

seems like this may be the logic ... not to just take your word that someone promised

I know its worth it, it saved me last time my first mac was quoted at 1600.00 for repairs.

That sounds like it could be right. Again, they should of let me know though. I shouldn't call in, and than be told they removed it.

I haven't checked lately or it might have changed but from what I remember, you're getting a little bit more than the educational discount? AppleCare for the 15-inch is $379.00, $279.00 for the 13-inch and with the discount, it's $299.00 for the 15-inch and $219.00 for the 13-inch. Those are the basic discounts and your college/university might give more but that's usually on rare or is specific to that school and it's programs.

I actually had sympathy for you earlier, but I retract my conclusion ... "not that I'm trying to get more" & "the discount they are offering me isn't substantial" ... oxymoron, please be at least honest with yourself.

I hope Apple keeps their stance in $100 off, and if I were Apple and read this thread, I'd pull the $100 back as well.

About this guy, yeah he probably bought a 2nd hand or refurbed mac with AC registered for it. Or it is even possible that some poor soul mis-registered this mac with their Applecare. The serials are almost exactly consecutive. After I've punched in 10 in a row I can almost makeup the next one off the to of my head and be right! Pretty easy to typo your way into registering someone elses mac.
