Hey guys. I just picked up a new 2017 Kia Sportage SX which has Apple Car Play. My main question is about Apple Maps. Is there a way to still use my iPhone as a GPS too so I can see the actual real time map, or will it only show directions? Wasn't sure if there's a way to do it on both the car and phone at the same time.

Welcome aboard! I think I know what you're talking about, and yes there's a way but it doesn't work too well for me. When CarPlay Maps tries to give you navigation tips, cancel out of it so you're just looking at the map on the screen. If you then tap in the upper left corner, a top-bar menu should appear with some icons. The first icon looks like a navigation arrow pointer thing; tap on that to toggle the "follow me" mode.

When it works, that mode keeps your position centered horizontally, about 2/3 of the way down the screen, so you can see what's coming (it even rotates the map as you make turns, etc. so that "forward" is up, as one would expect). However for me, CarPlay seems to randomly switch out of this mode every so often. I haven't found a pattern yet, as it sometimes does this even when I literally don't do anything except drive.

[Edited to add... please note that the phone screen is blanked out when doing the above; I am not sure of how to have the phone's screen show the map and the CarPlay screen show the map also. The idea with CarPlay is to enable hands-free operations, where you wouldn't need or want to use the phone when it's all on the car screen.]

Added CarPlay (JVC) to my 2001 Audi A4 a week ago and I absolutely LOVE it. I had the installers route the phone connection into the glovebox, and I think that is greatly enhancing the experience for me. My phone is (safely) tucked away and my access to it is through CarPlay. I did this for safety. Siri is reading my text messages to me, she's texting for me, I'm hearing my podcasts, the navigation is fantastic. I don't see what's not to love. The interface is dumbed down, yes, but that is intentional so the DRIVER is not DISTRACTED. Isn't that the point? Can I play Clash of Clans through CarPlay? No. Should I be able to? No. I am DRIVING.

A page or two back someone was complaining about a passenger plugging in their phone to play some music and then still using their phone to text or whatever and how horrible CarPlay handled this usecase. NOT designed for that. I don't know about ALL CarPlay units, but the JVC I purchased has BlueTooth which can be used to connect OTHER phones and then play their music. The wired connection is for the DRIVERS iPhone. The DRIVER plugs in his/her iPhone and then sets it down (closes the glovebox) and DRIVES. That is how CarPlay is designed.

The thing I love most about CarPlay is that it has allowed me to cancel my overpriced, poor sounding XM subscription. I can use Apple Music and Slacker seamlessly through my head unit and both have better sound and great selection for much less money.

my only issue is when I bring up maps it wants to direct me to my home. I sometimes use maps for just "looking around". And in direction mode shows larger area and thus not as much detail.

My car does Android Auto too and recently I was surprised to see how much better Apple Maps is where I live than Google Maps. Google is good for using on your phone to see business names, opening hours; but Apple Maps was better at routing around Canberra (albeit, a planned city so it's not too hard).

I really like CarPlay and the way it keeps me focussed on the road. I tend to use Siri only to send iMessages and make reminders and it works OK.

Have you tried Waze for driving? In my experience it has the fastest road layout updates (new roundabouts, etc.) & it you turn off its social bits (like seeing other Wazers on the map) it is really hard to beat.

I just wish that Apple Maps was better as a sat nav than it is.

Agreed 300%! Maps take about six months to update the new road layout with multiple feedback submitted to both Apple & TomTom. Waze has it right in two-three weeks or even faster due to direct users' feedback. Their advertised "relying on AI feedback" (as opposed to real people) thing does not seem to work either, as it was totally unaware of the main highway closure the other night as I was going home from the airport. Maps look pretty, but their data accuracy is still hard to rely on.

Question for anyone using a pioneer nex unit, can I choose to use just the Bluetooth connection if I want? I love waze and I'm wondering if I got the nex unit could I choose Bluetooth and use waze? I know it wouldn't show on the big screen.

I've found that its gotten significantly better that it used to be. There are times when I like its route better than Google. The great thing is that you always do have Google on the phone if you really want to double check.... but most of the time I use Apple Maps and have been fine with it.

You can tell it you aren't going home, so not sure why this would be a problem. I actually like that it prompts me for home when I get in the car because over half the time if I'm not already at home, that's where I'm going. Its just trying to save you time and you can ignore it and do what you want.

Yes, you can use Bluetooth for audio only... in fact my Pioneer seems to want to do that automatically if I don't plug in my phone.

So when i get a facetime video call while connected to carplay i dont get any notifications on Headunit. Anyone else facing this problem

I just got CarPlay in my new car and I am experiencing the same issue with incoming FaceTime video. Any solution?

nope, i submitted this issue with Apple as well but not fixed yet. I think Apple does it deliberately so that people dont FT while driving!

That probably makes sense as I cant play dvd's in my Merc when the car is moving for safety reasons. To be honest, I didn't even know that Carplay supported FaceTime. I haven't used Carplay much as it seems to be something of nothing and doesn't really offer anything that the Mercedes comand system doesn't.
I should invest more time in it.

yeah I thought that as well, but then it lets you place a FT video call... you just cant receive it so I think it is a little awkward... you would think it would go both way if it was about safety....

no i think you are misunderstanding it. You cant have the video call on the in dash screen. What we are talking here is when someone facetimes you, the phone doesnt ring and you only get a notification of msised facetime call on phone screen. As far as CarPlay is concerned, i will pick it over the manufacturer's in dash system any day!

i agree. you can make a FT call from your phone. All i want is that if someons FTs me while i am connected to CarPlay, i should be notified with a ringtone!

The better workaround for incoming Facetime video calls would be to switch them to Facetime Audio. Maybe Apple can go that route.

BTW: LOVE CarPlay in my '17 Honda Civic and my wife's '17 CR-V. The OEM interface can go *** itself. ;)

I just bought my second CarPlay enabled car and this version is different!?!? My first car had zero limitations, but my new Grand Cherokee has different features when the vehicle is in motion. For example, I can't chose any artist I want and also when I click an artist, it goes straight to a random song instead of letting me pick an album. Are there different flavors of CarPlay for each manufacturer? Very frustrating...

I always thought the point of carplay was making a uniform experience across any platform, interesting that your experience isn't going well, must be a Jeep thing.

I just purchased a 2018 Honda Accord and am experiencing something similar. However, I can't find a way to change artist or album on my vehicles main screen, at all. There is a "browse" button, but it is always grayed out, even if I am in park. The only way I can change artist or album is through my phone or by using Siri. I can only change the volume or move between tracks using my vehicle's controls.

Do you think thats it? I am just wondering if it was designed this way for some reason, especially since I can't find any reference to browsing song choices in the owner's manual. I could see them doing this as some kind of safety measure, even though it doesn't make a ton of sense since you can search through tracks using your phone.

Its a 2.0 Touring. I paid $35,600 before TTL with about $1k worth of accessories. I think I could have gotten a better deal had I waited. However, I was in a position where I needed a vehicle now and I was particular about trim/color/engine.

I will say that it is a fantastic car. I feel like I am sitting in a luxury car inside, and I came from a 2014 Honda Accord.

Yeah i am inclining towards Sport 2.0! Congrats on the purchase. Are you actually in CarPlay screen? or just the normal infotainment screen. On my Civic i usually go to CarPlay screen and then music and then i can browse all the songs and ofcourse doing this while driving!
