Because we ALL need an "intelligent" smoke alarm and central heating, don't we? Yeah... no... the phrase "sledgehammer to crack a nut" JUMPS into my mind. The more technology there is, the more there is to go wrong. Seriously, a "connected" smoke alarm? Listen okay, a smoke alarm DETECTS SMOKE - that's ALL it needs to do. If you need it to do more, it's going to become progressively more unlikely that it will be able to RELIABLY (kinda important for a LIFE SAVING device) do the one, SIMPLE thing it needs to do, which is to tell you "HEY! I DETECT SMOKE - TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION" - you're not going to be admiring how "cool" it is for being "intelligent", when your house is on fire.

I've been a qualified electronic engineer for 24 years, and an idiot for ZERO out of my 40 years. All these "intelligent" and "connected" gadgets just exist to validate the existence of smart phones, by dumb people.

We don't need things like the Nest, no. But it is nice having a fallback in case you forget to turn off the AC or heat while you're at work. Kind of like how no one really needs the Apple Watch either but it's awesome for the right customer.

My HVAC installer recommended the Emerson Sensi because it was from a long time manufacturer of commercial grade thermostats and I have to say I love the thermostat. It's pretty basic for a wi-fi unit, but extremely easy to use and the app is very intuitive and simple. It's been very reliable and can be tailored for cycle time, schedules, etc. Anyhow I just thought I would point this unit out for someone who is looking for something simple, inexpensive, and reliable.

Using computers to save you using your brain, is precisely why the world is becoming increasingly more lazy and stupid. A large electricity bill will soon fix the problem of forgetting to turn these things off :D :p

Buying the Nest also eventually led to me buying some smart light switches and linking them together with IFTTT. It's pretty nice not having to stumble around in the dark trying to find the light switch when I get home at night.

... and when your internet goes down, you instantly lose any way of being in control (or worse!). If you train yourself to adopt good habits, you won't need to rely on an over-engineered "solution" to simple things that people convince themselves are too much "hard work" to learn to do. Technology is great for a lot of things, but this is increasingly becoming a case of "I've got a new hammer, and everything is a nail"

The Nest and those light switches work without an Internet connection too, you just lose the "connected" features. Nest would also be pretty nice in its own right even without any Internet connectivity.

Anyway, it's perfectly fine that some people don't want it and it's also Apple's prerogative not to sell them any more. The comments about how it's great that Apple isn't selling them any more because Google are pretty silly though.

I used to say that (and agree with it) about power windows on a car. How hard is it to roll your window up? Yet these days, it is near impossible to find a car with manual windows. Sadly, the sellers take over at some point. Why provide manual windows when you can charge more for power? Its just one more, more fragile, easily broken device.

Good to see Apple dropping a Google product.

That said, I don't see HomeKit going anywhere, either. Like the Apple Watch, HomeKit is one strictly for the gadget-obsessed, lovely people though they may be.

Yes, it seems like a modern version of X10 home automation from the 80s and 90s. Cool stuff but strictly for hobbyist. Hard to see people spending hundred of $ for new light switches so they can adjust lighting with their iPad.

Is it good? Why do they have to be enemies? I support Apple and Google and if they would play nice we'd have significantly better technology in our pockets.

Apple and Google push for industry standards where they make sense. They also have worked together in the recent past to do things like support Disney's Anywhere Movies service which allows users to purchase a Disney movie on any platform and watch it on another. All the buyer had to do is register the movie and their devices.

There is nothing wrong with Apple and Google trying to out-innovate the other. It's pure speculation that we'd have better products if they were one, one I don't buy into because large alliances usually just end up acting like a monopoly because the need to compete is greatly diminished. And honestly, Apple and Google separately can each be overbearing enough at times.

It's less to do with Apple maybe introducing something, and more the fact that Google bought Nest.

No. It's everything to do with the fact Nest doesn't work with Apple's HomeKit so why would Apple want to confuse customers by selling it in stores?

this kind of thing is the same brand of stupid as when we heard Bill Gates dropped the hammer on anyone bringing Apple goods into his house. really Apple, you can't compete even in your own store. ok buddy.

Really silly comment. Apple has no duty to feature other companies products, much less one that doesn't align with their marketing campaign. It's part of retail.

Adopting good habits can't automatically start my dishwasher, HVAC, and washer/drier when electricity prices are low.
Adopting good habits can't let me know that my smoke alarm is off while I'm out of the house.
Adopting good habits can't guarantee that I won't forget to turn off the lights when I head out.
Adopting good habits can't allow me to send documents to my wireless printer at home and have them ready to be picked up when I arrive at home.

Your views are essentially a case of "I don't see the need for this, so anyone else that wants this must be lazy!"

As an Ecobee3 owner, I think it's far superior to the Nest. Also, they're a Canadian company which is kind of cool.

As a fellow ecobee3 owner, I love it. Bought the additional sensors for more rooms. Works great.

The Nest smoke detector is stupid because it uses your home wifi which sometimes can be unreliable to communicate with end user but Alarm.com system with a smoke detector SAVE HIS DOG LIFE! Because he receive the text notification and ran back home to save his dog and the Central Station already had the fire department on the way to his house

Must be a b*tch when you get dropped from a high traffic store like this... major blow to business.

You think a significant amount of purchases for Nest came from Apple's stores? I'd have to see the numbers.. I would guess it's a loss, but not critical in the slightest.

Makes sense if they are moving towards HomeKit enabled products and Nest doesn't have plans for that.

I currently have two Nest Thermostats and plan on swapping them out in the near future for something that does support/use HomeKit.

I have one myself... and it will be swapped out if Nest doesn't get their **** together soon. I'm giving them until Philips releases Homekit support for Hue (which, should already have been here as well... but at least they say they are working on it). If Philips can do that before Nest... then Nest is out because I want my lights and thermostat to be Homekit compatible.

Nest doesn't realize how much money they're already missing over this. I'm in the market for a home security camera too... bu there is no way in hell I would consider a Dropcam since it won't be able to integrate with Homekit.

Nest is a lot like Fitbit... they want their own ecosystem. Neither company is getting my future dollars (just got a Jawbone Up for my wife instead of a Fitbit because of HealthKit support).

Watch when the tables are turned on Apple, they'll be of to the government with a few choice pals to get it beat whoever into submission, just like they've already done.

anyone know if any of these homekit-based thermostats are "dumb" devices that can be controlled directly from an iPhone? i don't like how the nest products are always phoning home - google essentially knows when i'm home and when i'm away. i want stuff like this but i don't want it to be cloud-based.

You make absolutely no sense at all! Imagine if business didn't have connected or integrated (which ever word you like more) smoke alarm systems. I work at a hospital and when there is fire or smoke anywhere in the building, they're able to pinpoint the exact location where the smoke was detected and announce it over head on the intercom system. It could be the elevator shaft, or a network closet. It is important to know where the fire or smoke has originated from immediately so preventative measures can be taken as soon as possible. This smoke alarm system is connected but not via wifi.

Now back to the connected or integrated home. For people who live in a house that has multiple rooms, halls and floors it will be just as useful as the smoke alarm system in a hospital or other business. If you're in your bedroom sleeping on the second floor and there's a fire on the first floor kitchen or basement boiler room, you won't be able to hear the smoke alarm from one or 2 floors up if you were awake, but you're actually sleeping and won't know your house is on fire until it's almost right on you.

Having these smart smoke alarms that talk to each other would actually warn you upstairs that there is a fire on the first floor or basement. It is that simple to understand the importance of knowing when and where there is smoke or fire right away so you can extinguish the flames or escape without injury. This smoke alarm system is connected via wifi

You'd be one of my patients that come in via EMS who had a fire in their house and had to jump from the second floor window because you were sleeping, and did not know the first floor was on fire until you felt the heat of the flames upon you. People still die in fires till this date, and not because the alarm was defective but because they couldn't hear it.

I also have a nest, but don't have any specific reason to change it out - yet. It is a nice convenience and works well. That it is now a Google product is irrelevant. It makes sense for Apple to stop selling it, due to their focus on their own HomeKit tech.
