Tap to Pay is certainly a gamechanger. Recently visited the UK, most places weren't accepting cash, and everyone insisted use Tap to Pay on your card, phone or watch on the sideways wifi symbol on the terminal. My dad misplaced his visa card, and almost lost it at a business. From that moment, I told him, give me your card, let's transfer it on to your watch... no more fumbling in your pockets. Done. A 75 year old found a new skill, and ability to use the toilets in Hyde Park that were tap to use only, then the same routine in the London Underground.

Tap to travel on the London Underground really is amazing. You certainly miss it when you're in a city that doesn't have it.

wallet has been one of the biggest apple gamechangers of all time. It’s already replaced my credit cards and house key. I look forward to a time when it can replace my car key and drivers license as well. No more wallets!

Apple Pay is table stakes for me. I’m much more likely to shop when I know the business accepts Apple Pay. With an Apple Watch, it’s so fast I feel a little delight at the lack of friction.

10 years?? How time flies.
Seriously! I figured Apple Pay was only around 5-6 years. While I was slow to personally adopt and actually use Apple Pay, I can say I basically use it everyday now. With the exception of carrying my driver’s license, I don’t have to bring my wallet everywhere.

The first 100 times I paid with that using my iPhone, cashiers always questioned me how it worked, if I felt safe using that, etc.
Same thing happened when I started using my Watch.

One of the best features IMO is that it hides your card number behind another card number.
I think with the Apple Card it even auto-generates a new card number every time if I'm not mistaken. That's totally crazy, but I don't live in the US, so never could use that.

Thanks to the sheer convenience of Apple Pay, I've spent so much money at food places for the past 10 years. 💸

I have to credit Apple here, Apple pay has made my life easier. Apple pay is so widespread in my country I haven't carried cash in years.

On a side note, I‘m beginning to doubt there will be an “event” this fall. This is yet another thing Apple would have talked about at an event but instead is doing press release.

Or…. It means the event will have something massive.

Apple Pay credit cards. Apple Pay transit cards.

These two have totally transformed the world for me.
I seldom pay by physical credit cards anymore, and my daily commute can all be done on my Apple Watch. No authorization is needed after device unlock and as long as the Watch is still on your hand.
It’s one of the most successful Apple product that many people don’t realise.

All retailers that have NFC wireless card readers automatically support Apple Pay. I don’t know how retailers in the U.S. can deny it for so long. Major fail on their part.

It’s purposeful on their part. The only holdouts left are doing so on purpose in order to capture customer data to use for marketing etc, and also for their own processing deals.

I don’t know much about the financials but I’m certain Walmart for example expects a deal from their payment processor and wants to control everything, which is why they’re going to be pushing their app payment method for the foreseeable future.

All small businesses have long ago accepted it even if they don’t know it. At this point it’s far easier to have it than to not.

Because they have to pay a terminal fee to the payment processor and that fee depends on what features they purchase. Some businesses believe that the added cost of enabling contactless payments (or especially upgrading the terminals) just isn’t worth it since it’s unlikely to result in more sales.

It's not that as much as generally disliking accepting cards in the first place. After all, this is the country with the almost 20 year long (and counting) lawsuit against the card networks because of interchange fees. Note that it took a pandemic (and the associated increased customer demand) before many of the holdouts finally conceded.

I still remember the first few times I used it and the cashiers were blown away, haha.

When will Walmart finally cave in to accepting contactless / apple pay ???

I haven't shopped at WalMart in years so don't know what they have now, but based on what I know about business model and their feelings on credit card fees, they will never support Apple Pay. They CEO has said multiple times that payment fees are their biggest enemy.

I remember how slow it took for businesses to adapt to Apple Pay. I think Covid forced the idea of contactless pay on companies whether they like it or not. Still wish Walmart stopped acting like a child and offered it as well as their own thing. They are like Garth Brooks and Itunes right now.

I actually started shopping at Walmart when our grocery chain decided to close the store closest to us and build a megastore with blackjack and hookers a massive gas station another 3 miles away.

While the shopping crowd has some interesting characters, and the store itself feels more like a warehouse, their grocery section is surprisingly good and they carry some niche foods (like gluten free bread) at better prices than other stores. Also the only place nearby where I can get a large cut of brisket, short of going to a butcher shop (which like to close at 6pm).

But I agree, they will likely never do Apple Pay.

I have rarely used it since it came out.

Outside the house, I used it once at McD when they first accepted it and they hung the terminal out the drive thru so I could tap my phone. And I used it last summer to buy a drink for the wife at the gas station after I realized I had forgot my wallet. IT was exciting as I had went to sleep on using it outside the house. Mainly because of the early growing pains. And unlike the youths, I already had much experience learning to use and keep track of credit cards. Plus felt like I still had to carry cards anyway.

And then I stayed asleep because I started ordering food and goods via apps/websites for pickup etc. And the cards/apps gave me discounts/rewards that I don't get (or at least didn't get) via Apple Pay or Apple Pay wasn't any more convenient or I didn't have a trust issue using cards.

Lately I have used it online for 'weird' sites... sites I don't shop at or smaller sites. In the past year or so I have been programmed to use it in those cases. And it's great for that.

One of the most convenient things that came into my life.
I can't remember the last time I have taken any of my cards outside my wallet, and I'm genuinely thinking of leaving them home for good.

I retrieve cash so rarely, that I can bring my cards for that special occasion.

Apple Pay is great. Buy now and pay later is extremely un-apple and should not be promoted so easily. It just encourages debt and obscene levels of interest. Save up and buy, don't make bankers richer.
