On a side note, I‘m beginning to doubt there will be an “event” this fall. This is yet another thing Apple would have talked about at an event but instead is doing press release.
Mac mini redesign tho... they can't do that via press release. CAn they? Would they ? Could they?

You don’t need Apple Pay to use your phone or watch for contactless payments. It works with any card that you add to Wallet.
Isn’t that what “Apple Pay” is, just having a credit card in your Wallet? (OK so there is some encryption stuff going on but for all intents and purposes, it’s just a card in a Wallet). What’s the is Walmart thing, so they not accept contactless?

They don’t call boarding passes Apple Boarding.

I understand why they call the payment by on in websites Apple Pay, though, kind of.

It’s just so super convenient. Especially because with an Apple Watch, you now don’t have to carry neither your wallet, nor your phone!

Sure they could. It’s not a huge redesign, just a smaller footprint and more ports (allegedly). Of course they could also do a surprise 30 minute video introducing new things as they’ve done in the past instead.

Tap to travel on the London Underground really is amazing. You certainly miss it when you're in a city that doesn't have it.
My city, Phoenix scans QR codes. I just got back from SF which has tap to travel.

It’s a first world problem I am sure but man, it sure is way more convenient.

At least I was able to program my action button to open up that QR code, so it’s “kinda” like tap to travel lmao.

The only problem is that if you use the tube frequently, you have to use the same card every time to get any weekly discounts. I don’t think they get it always right….. my TfL (the tube company) debits are a mess.

The QR codes probably have the discount built-in.

A press release is too little. Fly everyone over to CA again a month later to see a smaller Mac mini and some spec bumps on other products...ok maybe too much.

So we go with the video with no theatre invites. A pre-announced online only pre-recorded event.

They can't pass up the '~world's smallest computer' marketing opportunity.

Walmart losing alot of sales because they don’t take ApplePay. Once sales drop they’ll come around. Goes to show Walmart does NOT care about its customers. It’s all about $$$

Walmart hasn't been losing money, they have been gaining..and their CEO has been very vocal over the years that it has nothing to do with customers; they consider any fee for payment processing, whatsoever, to be negative, as it cuts into their revenue.

🤔

Yup. Walmart is hurting. Sales are in the toilet and have been for years. 😂

Except they still accept credit cards, so that really isn’t a valid argument.

When they were supporting MCX, part of their motivation for doing so was to reduce the fees, but also to collect far more consumer data by understanding what loyalty activities they had as it was a linked part of that flawed system.

They do accept cards because they know they have to, but they have been vocal that they hate paying CC fees.

Mike Cook (walmart treasurer) and the CEO of Visa got in a heated argument on stage a few years ago, with Mike Cook saying that swipe fees were way to high, should be zero, and his personal mission was to completely end payment processing fees paid by Walmart.

They don’t have to accept credit cards. That is fully their call. I don’t think any corporation enjoys transaction fees they can’t control. It is why so many joined MCX.

IMO that argument (from their CEO) does not justify them not accepting Apple Pay as their fees are generally lower.

They also insist on their payment method (Wal*Mart Pay) for the same reasons they liked MCX, they want to collect data on their consumers.

Financially they do have to accept them even if they technically don't, as they would lose too much business if they didn't, but they don't have to accept Apple Pay (or Google Pay, or Samsung Pay)..and yet their revenue and sales continue to grow, so they aren't concerned with changing their stance.

Yes, everyone is aware that they want the data, too, but with face recognition and other things coming online, how the customer pays might not matter much longer.

Zero is unrealistic IMO but one could argue that there's no justification for them being much higher than what the EU capped them to (i.e. 0.2-0.3% or so). Whether that would have made US merchants roll out contactless/Apple Pay more quickly had such a cap been in force a decade ago we'll never know.

As for me, it is much easier to fish my Suica from my skirt's pocket than to fish for the smartphone in my bag, when I'm using the subway in Tokyo.

They do, and they are part of the fare capping program. I guess it's much easier to implement it this way. You can tap a credit card to pay for single rides.

Apple Pay has been an incredible success story

I never even carry a physical credit card with me (pretty much everywhere I go)

When I was in New Zealand in March, every single place that I went to took Apple Pay. It was super convenient and the currency exchange on the Apple Card made it super easy to see the actual price in USD (with the real time currency conversion)
How do you start tabs at bars without a physical card? I guess we’re not quite there yet here in NY.

In London pubs (probably elsewhere also) you either pay as you go, or you make a dummy payment (like checking into a hotel), and then your group gets a card with a number that you use to run up the tab.
