Next up, moving away from AWS and hosting their own iCloud services. Good to see the economy moving in the right direction.
If Apple has so many data centers why does Apple keep having to depend on AWS for storage? Apple appears to be the only major tech company that has to rely on rivals for storage when they should be able to build as many if not more data centers than any other tech company on the planet. Apple appears too cheap to have its own undersea data cables while all the other major tech companies are getting them for their personal use.

A data center in the hottest state in America? Great news for air conditioning suppliers.

Not even the top 10, either over the course of a year or seasonally. Our mean annual temperature is around 50-degrees. California, where Apple already has significant investment, clocks in at closer to 60-degrees.

The Reno datacenter looks so antiquated already. There has to be a better way to store and forward data than to have thousands of servers in clean rooms. The FO cabling is insane along with ginormous energy needs.

Look at the Map. it is very close to California but the the land costs about 10% and the people work for 50%. The cost of the power to run the A/C cooling is covered by Apple's solar power system. Yes it is hot in NV in summer but even better is the sky is mostly always clear so the solar power works well. The clear skys, low cost and closeness to California likely outlet the added cooling cost

Always cringe when I see photos of execs lifting a single shovel full of mud as if to say, "Yeah, I'm one of you. I know what it's like to do this".

Yes can confirm, it is indeed a data center. Part of Apples long-ongoing US investment strategy.
Your appear to be implying that Apple have a "patriotic" investment strategy. Apple's strategy is no different to any other multinational. If it's cheaper here, they'll build it here. If it's cheaper there, they'll build it there. With added publicity given where it's politically expedient, hence the photocall.

Is Apple going to Upgrade the Free 5Gb plan, as Iphones start at 32Gb, you should think that 50% should be cloud by now. So the 15Gb google has, was never that bad.. And yes 0,99 cent a month for 50Gb is not bad.
But say i have my iphone 3 years, so on top of the new Iphone put $36, - and give it for free, all the BS on creditcard accounts..

„The Founder“ at work.

Don’t these shovely groundbreaking pics always look weird? Maybe just because they try to show that the person can still hold a stick, while everybody else thought phone was their thing.

Scissoring a tape would have been closer to cutting one‘s fingers with a sheet of paper in the office, btw.

As a 3rd generation Nevadan (the Reno area), it's almost constantly rumbling somewhere. The truly impressive ones happen like every 30 years or so. I'd be more worried about the seasonal fires.

Wow, as a person that experienced two extremely minor earthquakes in my life (east coast). This is crazy to me.

It's about 50 degrees here today during the warmest part of the day. Reno is not at all like Las Vegas. I am looking out my window at a 10,700' mountain in Reno.

I do like Reno. Have family in Sparks and VA City. My daughter attends UNR.
Honestly if I was planning on moving, Reno would be on my list of places to consider.

Why isn't Tim back at HQ helping the rest of the team dig itself out of the security holes they've made for themselves recently in MacOS!?

I can't quite picture Tim standing in a room with engineers and analyzing kernel logs...

I didn't notice any branding on those servers... are they custom-made Apple servers running a special version of Mac OS? Or are they by another brand? I would assume if it is another brand it's most likely IBM since they've been partners lately? And if so are they running a custom Mac OS product?
Related question; is where did the cash go for those purchased machines? I bet they were not built in Reno so the money actually went else where. The only money invested was the construction of the building and the few local construction workers. The architect and contractors were all out of state.

Why not. AWS has some killer deals on storage and a good record of being reliable. Companies, even as big as Apple, need to pick their core competencies and focus on those. Outsource the rest of the stuff, and stay focused.

Me too. Nice little town. If only it did not snow there in the winter. Coming from the SF Bay Area that might be too much of a shock. Also, Nevada has high property taxes that seem to rise ever year, and I am not used to that.

Racks and racks of Mac servers?

;-)

All the news outlets should really call out Tim and Apple on this - get them to publicly state what brands of servers and operating system Apple, the makers of Macs and Mac OS, uses in their own data centers. The only reason I see for Apple not wanting to reveal this information is to avoid public embarrassment for not using their own Mac servers and Mac operating systems in their own data centers.

Mac users get all snarky when other computer companies are caught using Macs. But when Apple is in a similar situation, they get a free pass.
