I understand that. But that is not what many have suggested in Congress and for the USA. They've suggested the marginal.

Then it's not "flat".

What you're describing is marginal tax rates (each higher tier of income taxed at a higher percentage). We have that now.

One of the dumbest things really.

Shareholders already pay taxes on their capital gains and dividends. This committee is ****ing useless. The only thing Ron Johnson will do is tax your IRAs and 401ks 2x. Once when paid dividends and again when you withdraw at retirement
And ? it's just a new way to taxe the corporation... The tax will probably be BEFORE you get your money just as a way to avoid loophole...

'Apple has always believed in the simple...'

Such a great statement...so true...it's why they are successful and exactly why the tax code needs to be simple.

Sorry to say but Tim Cook is a terrible speaker. The inflection in his voice drives me nuts.

p.s. those complaining about Apple being brought into the hearing are now forgetting one thing.

This is an amazing opportunity for Apple. Listen to Cook right now. They get to promote what they do and their products. A government sponsored keynote to the world. They don't need to rent out the Moscone center ;)

Point is - yes - there's negativity with some of the precedings. But there's also a tremendous PR aspect here for Apple.

I agree for the people actually watching the hearing. But when the media starts reporting on it, I am not so sure it will be postive.

I call that a Libertarian, which is essentially what Rand Paul is. I am glad he is on this subcommittee!

Be careful, Rand Paul (and general Libertarians) are not as socially liberal as they claim. Most have outspoken against equal rights, specifically for the LGBT community. Hate crimes against the LGBT community are seeing a rise, with recent murders in NYC Greenwich village and many other attacks. Some believe it is a backlash against the recent huge strides in equal rights across the nation. Either way, I don't view any one party as socially liberal. I am fiscally conservative and socially liberal, I base my views on the merits of each case and not towing any party line. I wish most Americans would turn off cable news, venture outside their homogeneous suburban enclaves and meet people of differing cultures, class, race, etc. It's one of the reasons coastal/global cities tend to be more liberal socially.

I love how Teabaggers and Conservatives use "liberal" like it's a dirty word. I wear it proudly as a badge of honor. At least in the end, I'll know I was on the right side of history when the books are written.

Fixed that for you. Funny how if you change just a few words, it describes an entirely different atrocity.

By fixing this quote you made a very important point - There is no real difference between teabaggers/conservatives/liberals. They only wear slightly different clothes. They are all the same beasts underneath.
So, whatever side of history you are on you will have a lot of unwelcomed company with you.

Apple's suits and fatcats are now giving their statements. And I am getting sick to my stomach.

While their propaganda writers are first rate, these suits need acting lessons.

Good point. Negative coverage is still better than no coverage. Now Apple and Mr. Cook get to discuss the merits of Apple products and how home grown they really are compared to other gadget companies. Some of this will filter down to the masses that may not know much about how Apple works behind the scenes. This could be a big win for Apple. A government sponsored infomercial.

Here. We. Go.

Image

Yep. Summary version seems to be

'We are going to imply that you shifted US earned dollars out of the country illegally to avoid taxes you should be paying because a 'reliable source' told us you did. He also told us that the next iPhone will be out in July and we think you should give us all one for free and pay our phone bills cause the government is strapped for cash.

We created these laws but we never meant for you to use them. We are ignoring every other company and some of our fellow government members that use the same laws to the same end to make you look horrible.

Even though we have no proof you haven't paid every dollar you legally owe, we want you to pay more cause we don't want to have to do it ourselves.

We would out you on trial but that would mean we would have to prove our claims and we can't.'

Did I miss anything?

Exactly. I normally don't like the guy, but he's right. "Apple is a great American company. Why are we vilifying them????"

Because what's wrong is still wrong?

Apple's accomplishments in one area shouldn't become armor against shady behavior elsewhere.

We shouldn't try to draw and quarter Tim Cook, no, but we shouldn't give Apple a pass either. The loophole they're exploiting should be brought to light (and it is), and then closed.

While I don't agree with what Apple does with taxes. They aren't doing anything wrong. If we don't like it, we should change the laws...

Levin - you just said you're not going to vilify Apple. So what's with the "gotcha" questions??? This doesn't get to the heart of the issue.
