McCain doesn't understand the answers?

Anyway Cook is incredibly cool under the circumstances.

I was imagining some big reveal but it all seems pretty logical.
Why would Apple pay US taxes on products sold in foreign countries where they already paid taxes.

You know very little of history.

McCain never thought Palin would be a good VP. Do read much?

Um, then why did he pick her (or have his goons pick her?) I'm not interested in McCain's revisionist history after the election.

Just remember: McCain thought Sarah Palin would be a good V.P. His intelligence is very much in question.

Intelligence and independent thought isn't a factor with any one in Congress, regardless of party affiliation, or no party at all. All of them have their brain on their finger figuring out which way the wind is blowing, or their lips on an ass that can further their career or bank acct. But, yeah, McCain is probably one of the top mediawhores on the Hill.

These dirty liberals are just drooling at the thought of getting a chunk of that 100 billion. What a shame. This isn't what our founding fathers wanted when they formed this government.

Really? You're blaming liberals? You know that McCain is a Republican, right? Quoting from the article, which is quoting McCain: "It's completely outrageous that Apple has avoided paying US taxes and indeed avoided paying taxes around the world with its convoluted and pernicious strategies."

Stop trying to troll. Or...if you're going to attribute blame, then attribute it fairly.

I don't think Tim can answer it any other way. True or not. Who would expect him to say on record that Apple has a clear advantage over smaller or domestic businesses.

First of all - Duh. Of course they do.

Man... McCain is either really thick, or more likely, was trying as hard as he could to make what he was saying true even though it wasn't.

Apple pays the same tax rate as other U.S. companies on products that it sells inside the U.S.

For products that it sells outside the U.S., it pays a different tax rate as that money never had anything to do with the U.S.

There is no logical way to conclude that this is an advantage to Apple with respect to competing with U.S. only companies.

Again - you clearly aren't well read enough on this subject to discuss it. And I'm not going to derail this topic on a discussion on a past election.

haha.

Its annonying when you're trying to get your point across and the guy isn't getting it.

Worse, the guy is choosing not to get it. McCain's not stupid. He's trying to get political bonus points by talking down the big evil companies.

The most difficult thing about holding an opinion in politics is coming to terms with the fact that there are slimeballs on both sides, including the one you agree with.

How?

On products in the U.S., they pay just like any other U.S. company. On products outside the U.S., they pay the taxes due in reach respective company, and then hold the rest in Ireland. Why would they pay U.S. taxes on that money if they haven't repatriated it?

They don't put money made in the U.S. into Ireland. This by definition cannot be an advantage.

Like the old saying goes; "How do you know a politician is lying? His/Her lips are moving..."

I honestly believe that Tim Cook could announce in the hearing that for every $1 more in tax they are forced to pay, Apple will kill a puppy, and some people on these forums would say "Apple's really doing us a favor because puppies are a problem".
Puppies, no... but I wouldn't have a problem with cats. They can start in my neighborhood. There's about 7 or 8 cats, that use my yard as a litter box, that need to go now.

Well, interesting so far. Paul was pretty to the point with his feedback. Cook is pretty calm and cool, so glad McCain wasn't elected as US President. Maybe back in 1930 he would have been good.

Would be funny to hear "okay, Apple is picking up and moving out of the US if you guys keep this up". Haha

Over many, many iterations, the monstrosity of a tax code has been crafted by those on the right an the left to give their friends and donors special privileges and a means of avoidance. Yet, when another company utilizes that very same code who isn't a perennial donor or buddy to the congressperson, it suddenly becomes a problem.

Often, but I think in this case it's just that Apple is vulnerable now and Congress needs someone or thing to blame for their own failures. Apple has lots of $$, and it's had a bad PR year, so the knives are out. But much of this was going on when Jobs was alive, and Congress didn't have the cajones to call Jobs up to the Hill b/c it knew he'd eviserate each and every one of them. Cook and Opperheimer are easier prey.

Suddenly all these powerful, millionaire political frauds are populists.
The irony is almost painful.
It's a political circus.
Nobody is fooled.

Well, maybe a few brain dead zombies maybe.

McCain reminds me of Sen. Ted Steven's comments on the internet in the 2006 "Net Neutrality" hearings:

[…] They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the Internet. And again, the Internet is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.[5]
