There’s definitely too much focus on using devices, I find. My life improved ten fold when I disabled notifications on social media apps and other apps that demand too much time. Once those restraints are gone I felt much more free and relaxed. As for my kids..... I find it best to let them experience the internet as I did growing up with limited time online per day. My router is set to give them just an hour and they have to ask my partner or myself if they can use it for longer.... and ya know even if it’s just so they can play an online game or stream a film then they can if they’ve been good. We spend most of our time together building Lego or making things with the 3D printer. Its fun building stuff with kids I don’t know why more people don’t do it.

Cook has never been a big user of his own product which explains the disconnect I have with his statement.

Our technology separates us from other animals

With respect but with Apple the dream got cancer and died

This is a thread about a guy who was recommended by Steve Jobs to take the company over when Jobs' was unable to perform CEO duties. Sometime in 2011 Apple became Tim Cooks' company and it became his job to ensure the success of Apple going forward.
His first invention, the 5s was probably in the pipeline with Jobs, but it showed how a fingerprint reader and 64 bits can be architected into a small package and be a gamechanger. His next invention the iphone 6, blew the doors off of Apple's revenue, something Jobs probably wouldn't have released. Along the way Tim also introduced other products into the mix, again probably things that Jobs wouldn't have released.
As far as Tim's view in the interview, it is possible to run a technology company and have a belief that technology shouldn't be overused. Companies that produce alchoholic products are famous for that. Companies that offer gambling/betting services are famous for that. Car companies that show their vehicles used in a racetrack also promulgate safe driving and emphasis “professional drivers” on a “closed course”. There are enough real life examples of how products can be misused or overused.
Kudos to you for telling it like it is.
Neither iPhone 5S nor 6 are Tim's inventions. They are refinements on a given path. As a real manager, Tim would have put Joni and product engineers under pressure (like Steve did) to perfect the pathetic protruding camera, battery life and some other details. He didn't. So he hardly put his stamp on it but merely let the company go.
Maybe apart from the screensize, but that was largely "inspired" by the competition...
(and contributed more to larger dimensions than the 32 => 64 bits transition btw)

Indeed, many companies sell addictive products. Their strategies are sophisticated enough to optimize their business - taking addiction as a side-effect or rather exploiting it.
I won't elaborate on many examples in food/pharma/car/fashion/tabacco industries but this one from a credible source gives you some insight:
http://www.who.int/tobacco/media/en/TobaccoExplained.pdf
The most successful multinational corporations do exploit habituation/addiction/fashion and various in-between and extended mechanisms for their business tactics. CEO's will downplay such behavior via their carefully crafted low-key or humble public image - only because gullible followers allow them to do so - when caught or forced (did you ever hear Tim about this before ? Did or will he take responsibility by e.g. limiting the number of games downloaded or FaceBook use ?)
I won't furher upset you by qualifying this corporate hypocrisy => but it comes pretty close.
Happy following.

Technology I perceive as anything outside living naturally. Even tools, bows and arrows I would class as technology.

I know the definition has changed but I feel like we should have computer technology specifically defined as what HE means by the term.

I think it's possible to overdo use of computer tech though. Connected kettles and showers being two such examples, where we just don't need to be adding in computers. Fundamental basic physics issues like plumbing don't need to be connected and if they are, require use of computers in a way that avoids them becoming obsolete.

The best way to see computer tech is as an aid in closed systems, those that Operate with computer aid but don't require linking external tech for basic function. An iPhone requires connection to many services to operate and is highly prone to obsolesce. Overusing is when items that don't require services to function are used to break it.

He makes the same amount of money whether you use your phone an hour a day, a minute a day, or twelve hours a day.

That's not quite how the internet works these days .
You don't actually believe billions can be made just by selling iPhones ?

Apple runs on iOS data mining; that's why Cooks statements are so cynical , and silly .

His skin looks so soft! I wonder if that's due to all his time living in luxury?

He just doesn't get out much, I assume .

The iPhone is Steve’s invention, the iPhone 6 is Tim’s invention.

Oh and by the way, was Steve was ever worried about such things? The rest of the post is hyperbole and I just edited it out.

But it is fair to call Apple out on corporate hypocrisy relating to addictive behaviors as long as other companies; Facebook(notably), google, Samsung, oppo, etc, companies that either manufacture/create addictive products or produce enablers of such behavior, are called out in the same sentence. Let’s acknowledge theres an issue and address the issue instead of accusing the company of corporate hypocrisy. Glass full/empty I guess.

It must be me that sincerely apologizes by upsetting you with the truth. At any rate happy trails.

If you call WHO findings on how the tabacco industry works a hyperbole, then happy smoking...
Use enough sugar and keep buying the same class car as your neighbor, because that's what they want you (and no, don't name them because others do it too)

List in post quoted was strictly technology companies whereby there was a flagrant deflection in not addressing the comment specific to technology companies.

What great timing this is! After the shareholder announcement about limiting tech. Jump on any other bandwagons lately, Tim?

And I think it's just as important, if not maybe more, to learn a different spoken language, and as early as possible. You can interact with people using language, learning code only makes you sit in front of a computer for your job.

Though he does not have children of his own, Cook says in his own personal life, he "put some boundaries" on his nephew. "There here are some things that I won't allow; I don't want them on a social network," he said.

It'd be nice to have a CEO who's hands on with his own kids. Then perhaps we'd get some really useful parental controls.

It'd be even better if it was a CEO who wasn't paid out the ying-yang, so maybe he'd understand the desire to have multiple logins on the same device for poorer families.

Now, did I say addiction wasn’t real? What I did say was that singling out Apple for corporate hypocrisy when there are other offenders such as biggest of them all, Facebook, has made it very easy to be “addicted”.

So let’s try this again, if you are going to single out Apple as a company who you believe exhibits corporate hypocrisy you need to cite them all; Facebook, Microsoft, Samsung, oppo, google, etc. all of these companies either create addictive products or are an enabler to accessing addictive products.

Nothing like goalpost moving.

So you are saying Steve jobs should never been ceo, either?

Who said they shouldn't have been CEO? I simply said it'd be nice to have one that was more family oriented. Maybe the next one, if we're lucky.

Interestingly, of course, Jobs himself did not let his own kids use technology very much. I think it's possible he helped instigate the parental controls part.

I also think he was less obsessed with making high profits than Cook.

The constant particularizing/dispersing/distracting as your statements get invalidated, gets slightly annoying. See prev. forum reaction by kdarling.

Cook/Trump alike (and yes, there are more...)
Unfortunately nothing more has been addressed in your post, except more deflection. Thanks.

That has to be the most ridiculous statement I've read in a long time and I do hope you're joking.

You did say “paid out the ying-yang”.

That Steve didn’t let his kids use technology “very much” maybe he saw the handwriting on the wall that Cook is now dealing with?

Okay so this site has it's fair share of Tim Cook haters and just as many Tim Cook apologists, but you have to admit, Cook gives the haters enough ammunition on to hate him on a weekly basis. We'd all be better off if he wasn't constantly in the public eye.

He’s not going to stay out of the public eye. And, there are those who want to hear what cook has to say.
