Too far Mike, too far.
I’m all ears Mrkevin…. Are you saying that in a competitive tech educational environment that iJustine would be rated highly on “Rate my Professor” .com? She is an influencer and a theatrical communicator. She is not an educator. I”m comfortable with that assertion.

Imagine all of your "private" metaverse experiences archived and for sale to advertisers and whoever else wants it.
that’s very possible. Good catch mike5000. There are so many perilous crevices that await us! As a misanthrope, a cynic and a pessimist — it’s a fantastic time to be alive!!!

Michael, I accept that she isn't a educator in the traditional sense but one simply cannot overlook the educational value of her work.

Metaverse is a scam in its infancy… and will attract the same types of people who fell for the bitcoin/crypto scams… and it will be the same con artist exploiting those who fall for it as did the crypto schemes. The con artists will insert their favorite side kicks, they call them influencers, to tell everyone how cool it is and how you can make money off it, etc… and it will cycle through batch after batch of the next greater fools… in 10 years it will be long gone and only a bad memory to those who got swindled by some form of it… get in early is the message now… looking for the biggest of suckers and wannabe con artists…. Ask someone who touts it (the meta scam) to explain exactly what it is… you’ll get the same evasive, ambiguous, non-answers as those who try to explain what crypto is - and if you’re gullible enough you will fall for it… soon buying virtual land and property that have no intrinsic value or tangible worth… but that won’t stop the smart ones from doing just as they have in the crypto scams… i am glad the U.S. doesn’t regulate these scams and just lets the smart ones get ripped off… that’s how people like zuck got to be billionaires… selling things they acquired for essentially nothing - things about you! Now, who‘s into buying that bridge thats for sale???

There are quite a few tech YouTubers whose content I wouldn’t call educational either. MKBHD and Dave2D come to mind, but I watch them anyways because they are entertaining.

And that’s what YouTube really is to me - entertainment first, education second. I find that iJustine has done an excellent job of standing out from a rather staid and formulaic format compromising of men speaking into the camera. Precisely because she’s a woman and is able to get away with antics that men otherwise couldn’t.

And that’s why I end up watching her content, if not first then eventually. Each YouTuber brings something different to the party, and I gain something from watching 5-6 different videos all covering the same product.

How high she would rank on some arbitrary scale is irrelevant to me as that’s not why I watch her content in the first place.

Variety is always nice.

I often prefer the likes of RadioTVPhononut and Shango066 given the commentary is much like my own rant on society. It mixes classic electronics repair with humerous rants and kinda reminds me of my life lately.

Also VWestlife has awesome sarcasm.

Ok Abazigal. I’m down with YouTube as a shallow information media pool, occasionally entertaining and a few are informationally useful if you can wade through the ridiculous preamble that often accompanies such. As for the notion of “Men speaking into the camera!” The Horror!!! Laughs.— Gender has little to do with how good a communicator is. the fact is most people are poor communicators. Especially in the video realm. Corporate executives said in a recent study about new college graduate hires— among their top concerns is how poorly many of them “write”! Writing is hard. Telling an interesting, compelling informative story is hard. If writing was easy, we’d all be rich! Most of the videos I watch about hardware/software or process and I’m interested in being informed. I subscribe to the Pareto principle with respect to You Tube information videos. About 80% of them are a waste of time. 2 in 10 on a similar topic I find valuable.

Guess I'm old (46). I don't want anything to do with this ar/metaverse nonsense at all. I don't want a headset. I don't want glasses. I don't want implants. And I'm super tired of being presented with for-profit visions of the future.
Same. I just don't understand all of this nonsense. People already spend too much time on tech.

Have you ever built anything from a kit? Walked somewhere to which you needed directions? Gone to the grocery store?

You do not think it would be easier if you had glasses on that identified the next piece and showed you how to move it to put it into place, and exactly where it went? Have you had Maps talk in your ear while you were walking to give you directions? How about either glasses showing you arrows to get you to the aisle and product you want? Those are all AR and there are a million more of those examples.
Something gets lost when this happens. I actually found some cool places while getting lost in the old days when we had paper maps. Sometimes putting things together less than 100% accurate adds some uniqueness to the item.

Yeah. There was a hype when Oculus arrived, and competitors like HTC Vive came on the space, and then Google Cardboard and PlayStation VR and… not that much happened.
Every time VR gets shown in the gaming events/announcements I just get up and take a break. I have 0 interest in this stuff. I really don't understand this massive hype on it.

I think as a general rule of thumb, AR would benefit from scenarios where you have to hold your phone up for an extended period of time in order to consume information passively (eg: Pokémon go, reading maps, google translate). The glasses would allow you to have a much wider field of view, while resting on your face, so no extra effort is required on your hand.

It’s like how the Apple Watch lets me access certain phone functionality from my wrist directly, without having to fish for my phone (mobile payments comes to mind, as does music control).

Agreed. Just like NFTs. Why are people discussing "investing" when its a digital good? Will it even be worth it 5-10 years from now?! A digital property does no good if "Metaverse" goes down

After COVID People got the idea that humans are always 100% disease ridden and are scared of being near them without being masked or some dren. We got too comfortable during lockdown with apps such as Zoom and 'working from home' is now a new thing and hasn't slowed down. Introverts are championing this VR 'future' where every interaction is via screens. Autistic people who hate being touched won't care if they can't sense anything in VR, it's heaven to them and those like them.

It's scary and makes me hope I don't live to see 2030, because I do not want to be a Borg or be in some computer purgatory. I'm not afraid of death the way so many are these days.

Agreed, this sounds rather sad and pathetic, a sorry situation. People no longer need to problem solve or have to think since the AR will do it for them. We will create a world of people with limited skills other than reaching for the AR/VR to assist them. I already witness similar behavior with millennial coworkers who can't answer a technical question without googling it - but they don't learn this way, it's all shallow knowledge. AR/VR has the potential to create a world of permanent children living in a pseudo-real world owned by the likes of Zuckerberg - a sad very sad situation that seems closer to hell than heaven. The coming AR/VR world will require all of us to tread with open eyes and an abundance of caution.

Some futures are best left to science fiction. That said tons of sci fi even dating back to classic Asimov and Jules Verne attempted to warn us about this possible future but did we listen? nope.

This right here is why I pretty much refuse to use non Apple products when it comes to mobile devices. I will use years-old devices if that's what I have to do to avoid Android. I do have a Kindle Fire that I use for learning foreign languages, but I'm very careful not to do anything terribly personal on it.

Even with me locking down as many trackers as I can and being very wary of what I install, anything I do on the tablet still very much reflects on the ads I get from Google. They track those things like crazy, it's insane how fast it picks things up. I can't install two apps and make three searches without me getting bombarded a few hours later with ads related to it.
The obvious question is why are you getting ads from G, lol.

It’s too big for most people to understand. That’s what Tim Cook couldn’t say. Imagination matters. The gaming sector metaphor is the only reference many have. Beyond that singular reference the air heads of gaming can’t cope. “We don’t need mapping assistance”. It’s more important to get lost and have some meaningful experience. How ridiculous! You. And many others scoff at the potential. No matter. Web 3.0 and the coming AR/AI/VR space will be transformative. and brutal to those who reject it. And that is as it should be.

You're right Timmy, nobody wants that "Meta" BS, but guess what! Most average people also don't want your AR/VR drug you're trying so hard to shove into our throats.
Wait, you’ve received demands from Apple that you buy AR devices from them? Are they threatening you personally? Because that sure is what it sounds like. I wasn’t aware that they had even announced anything, much less started shipping. What is the name of this new device? Do you have any pictures and specs?

This thread reads more like a Daily Mail comment section on how video games are making children into gangsters, pornstars and drug addicts rather than something about an exciting emerging tech on a tech forum. It's just bizarre reading for the most part.
