Our China offices (I work for a Chinese company) are not opening fully, people are still stuck, but more importantly people are scared and most are aware they are being lied too but they can’t state it publicly.

The rest of the world is just starting to take action and will hunker down.

Of course, the Chinese government neglected the initial threat for weeks, and the only way to get it under control at that point was to scare people into isolation. Thanks to China taking the hit, the rest of the world is primed to react quicker. I don't believe it will have the same impact anywhere else.

I mean, i don't care about Tim, but he is just doing his job. If you wanna blame someone, blame the stock market. Pleasing all the pople investing in your firm is not an easy job to do...

In the meantime, in the real world
  • The flu remains a higher threat to U.S. public health than the new coronavirus.
  • This flu season alone has sickened at least 19 million across the U.S. and led to 10,000 deaths and 180,000 hospitalizations.
The press sells ads by causing fear about Coronavirus.

Bold, I agree....on the other side...I hope it does not affect your family, you might have a different opinion if it does.

Like anything else. Anything that affects us directly is going to be blown up of proportion from a macro level.
If my wife or kids die, it's a tragedy. For me. For the rest of the world? Not so important. Some family and friends might feel sorry for a day, but that's it. Life, and the world goes, on. Me dying (a sure thing), it will affect my family big time, you won't even feel it.

How is it media hysteria when its the governments that are putting measures in place?

Because that's the government's job, to calm people down and to make sure that things don't get worse than they could be. Since this started in a very localized area, it's relatively easy to take some basic precautions while a vaccine is in the works. Thing will go away with the season and hopefully next year we'll have a good vaccine. The truth is that the government - any government - has very limited power on air transmitted viruses.

Wow, lot of criticism from people with even less information. All of you know no more than Tim and probably far less since he and Apple have a very close relationship with China.

At some point, containment is not going to happen and everyone has to go back to work anyway. Either way, this can’t last forever. The flu isn’t great and we deal with it constantly. This may just become a new reality.

This too shall pass.

Get out of here with facts and logic.

Indonesia is tropical, viruses like the flu/corona spread less easily in warm/hot climates.
(There's no flu in summertime in the U.S./Europe)
Indonesia isn't really capable of tracking this.
(I lived there for a decade, my girl is Indonesian)

So that's like saying that Italy isn't tropical or in Summer right now, but with South Korea, they've got a massive outbreak of Coranavirus.

In the meantime. The concern is what happens if this is left unchecked and becomes as prevalent as influenza. The risk of death from this Corona virus is 66 times higher than the flu! Only 0.053% (less than 1 percent) of those infected by the flu died. 3.5% of those infected with Corona virus died.

I agree, though, that the media does more harm than good when it reports.

Thanks, Tim. I feel comfortable now. I'll keep buying your stuff like a good boy. (His behaviour reminds me of the Black Hole Sun film clip)

The case complete mortality rate of COVID-19 is around 7.5% so far. There is no cure and no vaccine yet. It does affect all age group and leaves permanent damage (fibrosis) to lungs even after you recover.

As someone who lives closer to the epic center, the attitude in this thread feels exactly what it feels like a month ago.
"It can't be that bad."
"It is just fear-mongering."
"It just affects old people. I'm not old, so..."
"Flu is worse."

My country was estimated to be the 2nd riskiest to COVID-19 spread by John Hopkins U. However due to our gov't early measure, we suffer much less deaths comparing to other deemed less risky country. I believe everyone's altitude makes a difference. I would urge everyone at least not dismiss it like a distant foreign war.

It’s not 7.5%.

All the sentiment from a month ago is still pretty much true. This is definitely fear mongering. Young, healthy people aren’t dying at any rate close to 7.5%. That’s ridiculous. China’s numbers have improved. There are some new cases, but the flu is still way worse with what we know today.

You’re extrapolating.

Yep, there was some research repentantly the general influenza virus (the study was not about the coronavirus) has above 70% air transmission when the humidity is below 42% and drops to about 15% above 42% humidity. As simple thing like keeping the humidity at 50% in stores, common areas, and transportation areas would go a long way to keeping viruses in check. Unfortunately, most places don't have the ability to control the humidity or they set it low for cost reasons.

I don’t like Tim Hollywood but the comments here are insane.
I mean stores and stuff are slowly opening again there, so what’s wrong with his feeling?

about a 1000 dead people? 10s of thousand seriously ill people? probably many, many more to come?

ask the first Chinese physician who discovered the virus, who was arrested, kept quiet, jailed, fined.. and now dead. Chinese marketing at its best, I do see some similarities in Tim’s company; keep secret, deny, ‘own the message’. While Tim can be successful with it, this time he is not..

I am confused, neither Italy or SK are tropical or in summer right now. I might be misreading your post.

Its all mass media hysteria. Look at the stats of what ages are affected and the likelyhood of infection. Sure, certain age group (very old people) are at risk but if you ask them they mostly say - "I have other things to worry about at my age".
This thing will settle just like everything else. Its just another fear media frenzy to keep us busy.
Compare the numbers to things like Flu etc. and that will paint another picture.
Overall, this is getting silly.

Viewpoints like this fail to take in account how the world has continued to change over time. Mass transit, more people, denser cities... these are all factors that make this DIFFERENT from past outbreaks. Leaders know this, which is why there's been drastic measures taken to stop people from gathering and moving in and out of affected countries.

True.
We also have better healthcare, better infrastructure, better hospitals, better medical knowledge, water availability (very important), more and improved controlled environments (air conditioning, filters etc.), better medicines etc.
That's why we die much later than before.

3.5% of the known cases (who knows how many thought that it was a common cold).
Also, 95% happened in a single region, the one where it began.

China will get it under control I reckon. It's what happens around the world after which will show how good the Chinese are at containing something. We will need to compare times along with the relevant amount of people. Next week will start to tell.

It’s 7,5% from the seriously ill, it’s about 2-3% from the ‘proven’ (definition) ill, probably less because we do not know every not-serious affected.

China’s number numbers are not to be trusted, when you stop measuring, infectionrate is not. In a totalitarian state there are no checks and balances. So if Tim meant the numbers are under control in China, they usually are, and also not very often true.
