How hard is it to keep thing update with new tech while working on a future, redesign? Car makers constantly do it, why can't Apple?

Agreed. Apple is a perplexing entity on this matter. I wanted to go with a MacPro and refreshed Apple display, and waited years to see an update since my MBP/30" ACD combo was failing. I got a 27" iMac, which wasn't my first choice. At the end of all this, my general excitement for Apple desktop products is at a 30-year low.

Meaningless, really.

Everyone is excited, but maybe what he meant is that Mac mini will be an important part of the product line because when Tim is done "wowing" the world with his latest innovations, the Mac mini will be the only product not yet completely screwed up. :D:D:D

Just kidding... It's nice to know they have something in the pipeline. I say wait, if you can. I got tired of waiting for an updated iMac and ended up eating my words and buying a new one when did finally refresh the line.

Not sure or not to be worried that he didn’t use the “pipeline” in his response...

Apparently there’s quite a blockage in the Mac oriented product pipeline coming out of Apple.

You need an understanding of the PC industry in general right now to understand why Apple isn't releasing new machines in the way they use to.

The entire industry has seen a big slowdown in sales. There are less and less desktops and laptops being sold. Because of this, it doesn't make financial sense to invest heavily in releasing a steady stream of new machines as they've all done in the past. They'd be wasting their money trying to capture buyers from a smaller and smaller market. You don't invest where the market is drying up.

Instead, they've put their resources where the money and sales growth is. Smartphones and even tablets.

There's a reason Apple is the richest company in the world and you're not a CEO. They understand where to invest their resources for the best return.

So, with such words, Mac mini sales will only go down close(r) to 0, and then as it's not selling at all anymore, it will justify so remove it from the Mac line :D

Or, knowing that, such announcement from Cook means it's gonna move soon.

I could see a new Mac mini being an aluminum version of the Apple TV with intel 8th gen quad core processors and thunderbolt 3 for external expandablity like EGPUs. That would be a nice setup IMO as long as it stays in the $500 range....

If the next Mini is half decent, it may be a potential replacement for my aging MacBook Pro!

There is one and only one thing that prevents me from buying one right now (aside from the current model being a museum exhibit) and that is the lack fo Apple branded stand-alone display.

Apple should really deliver a Retina display that we could use with our MacBooks and minis.

As I said in a post the other day and many times in the past.

I hope this is the evidence needed for the countless people that are insistent on the idea that Apple have axed it.

Anyway, the shock here is the fact that Tim Cook said it to a customer, which is unexpected.

2018 will be an exciting year for Macs.

I agree, it looks like 2018 is shaping up to be a big year for Mac users; especially the pros.

The release cycle on Mac Mini shows that Apple does not want to sell a device that could get us MacOS platform cheaply.

The truth is - a Mac Mini is a perfect device for the school desk of an 8 years old rascal. Orange juice spilled into an USB keyboard ? No biggy.....the same juice spilled into an Macbook ? Tragedy. :) The same for a cheap monitor knocked over vs. an iMac knocked over.

Even I would love to replace my 2014 Macbook Retina 13 with an 4k compatible Mac Mini. And yes, I would get a cheap 2-in-1 Windows device for travel around the world as well as from the office to the bedroom.

For the last 3 years it’s been people like me saying it (realistically for 1-2 years given the refresh cycle), now you have the news from the CEO of Apple and you still don’t believe it?

If it were an important part of their lineup why leave it years out of date with the current version a huge step down from what they sold 5 years ago? The 2012 mini is worth more used on eBay than it cost brand new, because it's better than the "current" version.

Important part of Apple's lineup Phil Shiller's ass.

The fact is Apple is now a phone company that does computers on the side. Sure they'll update products like the mini every 3-4 years or so to give the illusion of remaining relevant in this sector, but it's more of an afterthought than a core focus.

Why in the world does it matter what the Mac mini looks like? It's far far more about the capabilities.

What most here don't seem to understand is that even the current Mac mini appeals wonderfully to its target audience. It's not about being a high-end machine. It's about being able to browse the web, go on social media, do a little iTunes, some word processing, maybe a tiny bit of photo stuff in iPhoto, and that's about it. It still sells well to that audience.

I didn't mention how it looks. I was referring to a form factor that people like, but has become woefully outdated for too long. The Mac mini was, and should be comparable to a current laptop in capability, but it is no longer. I know many graphic designer types that like the lower cost form factor combined w/ the display of their choice, but no one wants a computer that's three years old even if they just need it for web browsing and office-type apps.

I’m almost beginning to think Tim Cook has started to frequent MacRumors lately.

First with the Mac Pro “announcement” earlier this spring.
Later WWDC with a new focus on the Mac, clearly stating it’s the heart of Apple and simultaneously releasing updated MacBooks, MacBook Pros, iMacs and the iMac Pro.

Now if they can only do something about EU pricing that would be great!
