Apple CEO Tim Cook met with senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on Friday afternoon to discuss topics like technology and economy, reports BuzzFeed.

Hatch, who is a member of the Judiciary Committee and leads the Senate Republican High-Tech Task Force, has met with Cook several times in the past and participated in Apple's ongoing encryption debate with the U.S. government, calling for a private Senate briefing with Apple attorney Ted Olson following the dismissal of the San Bernardino case.

During Friday's meeting, Hatch told BuzzFeed he and Cook talked about ways to grow the economy and the technology industry. They also spoke about Cook's trip to Utah in October, where Cook took part in a privacy-related Q&A session hosted by Hatch.Cook, along with Apple's vice president of environment, policy, and social initiatives Lisa Jackson, also had dinner with Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, on Thursday evening. They dined at Italian restaurant Tosca, located near the White House, but it's not clear what was discussed.

Cook's meetings with Hatch, Trump, and Kushner follow a December tech summit that saw Cook and other leaders like Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, IBM CEO Ginny Rometty, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss topics like trade, immigration, and vocational education.

At the time, Cook told Apple employees he attended the tech summit with Trump because Apple plans to continue to focus on key areas like privacy, security, education, human rights, and combating climate change. "Personally, I've never found being on the sideline a successful place to be," he said. "The way that you influence these issues is to be in the arena."

Hatch is responsible for the deregulation of all kinds of snake oil sold on talk radio and tv that claims to cure Diabetes, Cancer...lose weight while you sleep........this has made scammer wealthy and they have contributed to his re-election...he is old and if he knew Cook was Gay...he would not touch him....

It'll be so interesting to see what having America's first imbecile president will be like.

And emoji, you forgot emoji...

No more focus in computers nor technology, just politics and ideology. If Apple was a forum, Cook would be banned for being always trolling with ideology.

I'm sorry but the more Cook gets cozy with Trump and his kids, the less I want to buy any more Apple products.

Cozing up? He's talking with policy makers as CEO of one of the largest tech companies in the world. He'd be derelict in his corporate duties if he closed off dialog because it's not the candidate he wanted to win. That is called dialogue. It's what happens in a civilized society, even when, or especially among, disagreeing parties. Grow up. Policy making in the tech field is going to continue with or with out Cook's input. Ever think maybe it will be better crafted with Cook and others in the tech field's voices?

I can think of plenty of reasons why one my look at other company's products -- based on Apple's product product line though, not because it talks with Washington on issues that face the tech industry and business in general.

Good luck finding a hardware company that doesn't accept influential policy maker's invitation to be heard. I think you'll be left chiseling your memos on slate rock because even the paper industry meets with the president's advisers, no matter which party is in power. The operative word is they want the ear of who is in power.

I hope Cook also notice the books under the stand of the iMac. As I've done the same because the stand doesn't allow an ergonomic perfect solution. Please take notice mr Cook in case you're developing a new iMac. But I'm afraid the talk will go about bean counting and you don't care about usability of your products as long as they make money o_O

Cook & Hatch....that's an odd couple. Maybe when the Apple board asks him to resign, the two of them can do a comedy series.

All the millions of people that have been watching the apple event and Tim Cook turns up in his jeans and top but when he goes and see people like trump & Orrin Hatch he gets his best suited and booted gear on but when he comes on stage to millions of people he looks like he out shopping and not doing business.

At the end of the day the Customer is priority and that provide apple with revenue to create more ideas

i think if you are Ceo of a big Company like apple you should be suited and booted all the time to give the company a good name and that applies to the other people that are working for apple and coming on the stage too

Brazilian born/American citizen, gay atheist here who voted for Trump. Don't generalize buddy. Not all of us non white, minorities are into playing the victim card.
You're just like my Medicare and social security benefitting father, voting against your best interests. No one is perfect so don't feel too bad.

Those books are copies of "Designed by Apple in California." So, no Tim is not going to redesign the iMac when they make so much on "stands."

The American people (voters or not) have allowed the government to become too powerful. Cook should (really has to) cozy up to any party in power if we wants to protect his company and employees. Cook's problem is that he went all-in for the chief crook Hilary and thats is not good and he'll have to work a lot harder to get back to balanced.

Do you remember and understand the mess the USA and World was in when Obama took office? Obama did great work and the country's economy recovered far faster and better than Europe. I honestly don't get how folks can't see that. Is it that you don't remember the recession? Or do you just think it really wasn't so bad? I'm honestly curious.
They can't see it because Fox "News" and Breitbart told them a continuous stream of lies - oh, sorry, "alternative facts" - for the last 8 years (at least), and they lapped it up, because it fit into their world view, where "everything is horrible because it isn't the 50's any more." They bought into Trump, hook, line, and sinker, because he said, "everything is horrible here in the USA, and I'm your savior who will get rid of all those terrible things you've had to suffer through for the past 8 years." And it didn't hurt (Trump's campaign) that he waited until after the votes were cast to disavow the support of all the white supremacists. He didn't have the guts to do that before the election, because he wanted all their votes.

The Republican political machine had an avowed strategy for the past 8 years to block every single thing that President Obama tried to do - because he wasn't their guy, thus he was the enemy - even when what President Obama was proposing was the Republican's idea in the first place! And now they're rushing to undo everything he did manage to get done. They'd like to erase him from history.

So you end up with low information voters like the one seen on twitter a while back saying "yeah, they're gonna repeal Obamacare, that's great, gotta get rid of that - it won't affect me, because I have insurance through the ACA!" They're in a huge hurry to repeal the ACA (because it's tainted, because Obama touched it), and they'll... definitely replace it with something "way better" that they haven't figured out yet. Sigh.

Like everything else apple seems
to be doing these days, they design the stand to look good on the showroom floor, with usability be a secondary thought ... or no thought at alll

Obama cut food stamps. Bill Clinton threw a million Americans onto the sidewalks and left them there to die.

Social spending in the USA reached its peak under Richard Nixon. Jimmy Carter began the cutting.

Google: Obama cut food stamps

Take note of the iMac in the back standing on top of several "pizza boxes". Nice to see that Apple products (and not just iPhones) have become far more prevalent in today's world.
Ah...is that the "Pizzagate" I've been hearing about?

I agree with the post saying they are probably discussing Steve's Reality Distortion Field. Kellyanne Conway apparently still needs it. Hers was made by Samsung around the time the Note 7 came out so there's some question about it exploding at an inopportune time.

There...I took a swipe at Samsung and Trump. I'm so proud. I fit right in here. And just to clarify, I'm having a bit of lunch fun. I had a Note 7 I liked and I'm actually neutral on Trump. I've been pleasantly surprised by some things and utterly aghast at others...so that works out to neutral with a hint of flummoxed. ;)

Now...switching my brain to actually engage in meaningful conversation, I do think it's very smart for Tim to get on good terms with the Republican dominated power structure before there's another showdown like the San Bernadino one.

He likely realized he needs to strengthen communication when there is NOT an immediate crisis situation with the government. I don't know if that tactic will work or not, when and if another direct showdown occurs.

Oddly enough it might work better under Trump's administration than it would have under Hillary. I voted for her, but I know her through friends and family who have worked in DC and they have said she does not like to listen once she's made up her mind. Trump is reported to listen to those he's called in for meetings. Unless it's advice to stop tweeting, and then even Melania and Ivanka and Kellyanne can't stop him. ;)

Yes, just take my one sentence out of context and don't quote the information I used to make my case.

He's a Fake News guy. They make up stories and then accuse their victim of using "Alternative Facts" until they come up with another retort that forwards their campaign of lies and slander.

What does a Progressive say to those who want high paying manufacturing jobs? "It's a service economy", which means we're here to be their low paid servants.

You're eight years old?

Google: George W. Bush

Errr, Bush wasnt nearly the idiot that this guy is. Even Jon Stewart said (in all seriousness) that he now feels bad about all the abuse they gave george w, since that contibuted to the polorizing vitriol. And now that we truly do have an uninformed idiot as president, any attempt to explain that is discounted, since we've been using the most damming rhetoric possible against much more competent politicians whom we didnt agree wiith. In other words:We cried wolf so much when Bush was president, that we've devalued any attempt to call out trump

Not sure what the video is supposed to convey. There have been always bad slums and some abandoned neighborhoods in the US for the past century at least. Are you somehow saying that those 8 blocks covered by that video are somehow the specific fault of one politician or president in particular?

Hatch is one of the worst senators in the US. He is against public lands, which is a HUUUGE deal to many people. after all it is almost a $7billion business. i know this has nothing to do with the story, but there should be an age limit on politicians.
