Apple CEO Tim Cook: Technology Doesn't Exist to do AR Smart Glasses 'In a Quality Way'

your company has $200 billion in the bank though like make the technology
A supposed supply chain info leaker did an AMA on reddit and claimed these were in development and targeting 2019. I don't trust that the leaker was legit, but I would not be surprised to see if the Kuo guy confirms it sooner than later based on Tim's quote. That is right out of Steve Jobs' playbook of saying something isn't ready/good or is dumb, until Apple made it.

Don't care about AR..just want a decent desktop computer. No iMac...New Mac Mini would be fine, but would like a mini power tower at a reasonable price.....

Oh, i'm sorry...I'll have anther cocktail.......

the technology to create a pair of augmented reality smart glasses "in a quality way" does not exist today... ...with Apple aiming to figure out the "most compelling application" for an AR headset.

So they don't know how to make them or even what they could be used for?

I agree that the tech is way off, and not a year away like the article suggests. Maybe in 3-5 years it will be different, but right now AR is still in Alpha.

Physics my dude. You can’t throw money and break the rules and limitations we have now. It takes time. Electricity needs to be researched (battery technology), transistors need to be sized adequately (we are in 10 nm in phone chips and those chips are still huge), camera tech needs to advance while shrinking (don’t think we’ve had this happen yet. We need bigger lenses for more data) etc. Lots of things need to evelove.
all of that can be sped up or achieved with $$$

How about you do it and let Apple decide what to do with their money?
i don't have $200,000,000,000 sorry

In 3 years time when they announce the product, Apple will say that they have been developing this techonlogy over the past 10 years...

Isn't that pretty obvious? Sure the technology may not exist today and he could be right but that should not suggest they are not working on it, for a release say in the next 3 to 4 years. The keyword my friend is Today

OMG, they only ship quality products? WTF is siri then? Also, dongles suck along with their new macs that priorities design over practical day-to-day features like... wait for it, wait for it..... USB port, magsafe 2, hdmi, real processor, etc..

I'm so sick of Apple products. They aren't even useful anymore, Apple is a fashion accessory company!

With all of the money in the Apple war chest, why don't they spend some of it working on something like these?

This is the Apple I remember. Can't innovate my ass?

Yeah I think so. Who cares about talking speakers and phones that are paper thin. It feels like the past 5 years have been nothing but the same stuff. ARKit is nice, but it's not creating reality, only projecting it in a 2-D space. And even the pictures I showed above are rudimentary concepts without physical characteristics.

Barring a potential iCar unveiling, I bet that by the time we go to Mars with Elon Musk, the current products Apple makes today will be their bread and butter. Even worse, I'm only 21 now. I hoe when I'm 61, smart glasses will not be all the rage. I want to see holograms become ancient technology by then!!!

My point exactly!!!

magsafe 2
heh, that's gotta be the single worst Apple product i've ever spent money on.. and i spend money on it about once per year.

likewise, i bet it's the worst reviewed/rated product at Apple's store:

idk, i'll be glad when i'm no longer dealing with magsafe..
just my personal experience with the product.. it might be good in a highly controlled environment (house or occasional office use)..
it doesn't fare so well in other settings..

They could just copy it if someone else gets close but then make a better version.

Same. I'm bored of this stuff. Smartphones were exciting from 2007-2010, with somewhat interesting improvements from 2010-2012. Smartphone accessories were of some interest last year. Now everyone makes the same stuff, and you just pick whichever has the nicest UI. But I don't even care enough to bother buying anything.

in 40 years, there will be core technology that very few people can even imagine today.

for example, go back 40 years to 1977..
maybe 6 people in the world foresaw the internet.. smartphones? ha!

in 1977, the future in many people's mind was flying cars.. way off.

Come on now, first gen of any Apple stuff isn't the fully evolved version. iPhone, iPad, Watch, all needed 2 more iterations to really stand completely on their own. BUT, they were a baseline of quality above any other smartphone, tablet, or watch at the time they were released.
First gen iPhone and iPad were great. The watch was a piece of garbage, though. Way more GUI lag than I ever thought an Apple product could have, and that took away whatever small amount of slick factor it had.

You're right. 50 years ago computers were as big as the kitchen refrigerator too.

I wish I chose a more challenging STEM major 4 years ago to capitalize on the R&D. The silver lining is that I have the chance to do that in graduate school.

That aside the hologram stuff might even be too current for the future and we'll get technology that's even more powerful. If you're a designer, or a product/mechanical engineer or even a kid who wants to see concepts in 3D, which you really can't do today, this would be the tool to do it.

The connector itself, the magnetic thing that prevents tripping, is great, just not the cable. Like the Lightning cable, it's so fragile that you have to think they're making them break on purpose. And also the connector's license sucks; you end up having to pay a ton to buy from Apple.

Money does not give one magical powers. If it did, why does Apple not make all the OLED panels (and flash memory for that matter) in their own factories but have to rely on Samsung?

I’m pretty sure Apple would do it in a heartbeat if it were feasible.
basically you are saying apple will wait till other companies come out with the technology. Wait a few years and improve the quality of it to a really good level.
So does apple not innovate anymore?

yep, i’ve been wanting this stuff (in your pictures) for quite some time.

i’ve tried a few of my projects/designs (3d models) on an app called Sketchfab which is hooked up to ARkit.
it’s really cool but nowhere near what we want it to be or need it to be. (not meaning this app in particular.. meaning AR in general)

someone earlier in the thread said AR is currently in alpha. i would agree with that.

I think ALL of Apple's cords suck. I would save 100 dollars a year and get some of the puddy or some of the silicone covers that stop the fray. Google some alternatives, I started buying them about 4 years back, and now my cords NEVER break! Honestly, if Apple spent 50 cents, those ratings could be 4/5. But Apple goes cheap, and goes design over function.. AGAIN!

hmm. for me, it’s the connector.

there are tiny spring loaded contacts inside of it. once those start wearing out, or get dust in them, the connection can get real finicky and you start propping up the cable to particular angles just to get a charge. a few months of that then it’s done.

So who decides when something is best?

Why did they release iPhone one, when if they waited 10 years they could have released iPhone 10 ?

Why did anyone ever develop a car to sell, until they could make electric hover cars?

At any point in history, you develop/make/sell what you can make at that point in time, given the technology/knowledge at that point in time.

He really does talk some bull.

It's the future but we can't do it now.
We can make a smartwatch now and you dummies will buy it. So voila.

You're true motives are crystal clear to anyone that's not an idiot.
Don't tell me the first gen watch, rMB. we're quality.

my first gen rMB still works perfectly and i see no reason to upgrade.

Is it realistically possible to have them as contact glasses instead as the screen and an external device as the engine? Perhaps, as a watch?
Yes they just need to use EPGL patented Smart Lenses!
Don't tell me the first gen watch, rMB. we're quality.
Have had 0 issue with my 1st gen watch and still rocking it today, could be faster, but 0 issue, the rMB had its issue like ANY product, nothing more, I do not get your point.

Innovation is hard, Timmy is only good at iteration.

Didn't know he was engineering them?

Jokes aside, technology takes time, no matter who you are. They created the iPad back in 2002, but put it aside, because technology and the market wasn't ready. 8 years later, it was out - and that was under steve.

If they release something half arsed, people will bitch as well, you can never win :p
