The bottom line is that people who would typically be the ones sleeping in front of the store are the ones waiting for iPhone X. Wait until those lines form before writing Apple off. It will be the most hotly sought after phone Apple has made since the iPhone 4. It is true that the 8 is much more iterative in nature so it just isn’t going to get the crowds that the X will. But further to this, why would anyone be out there when Apple has plenty of supply available online for shipment to their house?

On a related note, it is interesting that all the trolls who thought the Apple Watch was doomed a few years ago are pretty much silenced.

He succeeded. The “x” doesn’t look like a generic slab.

In terms of look, yes. Some would argue though, to the worse. Hence the controversial opinions.

Looking at the bigger picture: we will find out in a few months if TC was successful in placing a product different to the generic slab. It has to sell in big numbers and the cost of production must be as such that the company must make a profit out it.

The question is: Why does anyone buy an Iphone 8 Plus knowing that in a few months he can have the best phone for not much more? I don't understand that...

Why does it bother you so much?

Should someone ask you why do you even bother getting any iPhone when Product_B with Android on it is already available? I just don't understand...

Who would buy an 8 right now? I imagine with the X around the bend, and the Pixel 2's launching in a couple weeks, anyone who follows tech is holding out.

Aunt Gertrude might buy an 8 if she had an upgrade sitting around.

Sorry but that X will be $1500+ Canadian - certainly not in many folks' price range including mine. If money is no issue for you then congrats.

People will vote with their wallets when it comes to the X - I'll be quite content with an 8 coming from a 5s.

Seriously?? Many people will go into debt for the new shiney! If that means taking out a loan, charging their credit card, or a selling a vital organ. It’s the culture we live in, sadly... look at Apple’s war chest for proof, the $$ didn’t magically appear by itself.

I agree, but even the current phone is expensive for most, so I wonder if this would put them over the top. I also wonder if they even have the credit score to lease the phone.. We'll see and I have a feeling that you are right.. but this is a terrible direction for the phone and I hope people don't buy it to send the message.

I just want a decent phone at a decent price, but it appears apple has switched to the up-sale model, putting the feature you really need in the next most expense phone. Just look what they did with the storage. now if you want the next storage option over 64gb then charge you $150 instead of the usual $100..

Drudge Report is trashing the new products saying no one is in the stores or in line to buy products from Apple store...but he has a track record of being a chronic liar....and he has NO advertisers...not one.

Doesn’t Drudge simply link to other news sources? To whom has he linked then that would be classified as the liar in this instance? The Los Angeles CBS affiliate?

As he often does on product launch days, Apple CEO Tim Cook this morning stopped by the Apple Store in Palo Alto, California as customers gathered to purchase an iPhone 8, Apple Watch Series 3, or 4K Apple TV.
[snip]
The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are in stock and available for launch day purchase in many stores around the world.

The Apple Store Knox Street (Dallas/Highland Park) was chock-a-block full when I did my investor research drive-by today. Apple will be fine. Android whiners can get bent.

I wouldn't mind so much if the iPhone maintained the same design. Look at laptops. They haven't change much for the past two decades. My issue with Apple is the way they take away features that are still useful because ... "thinness"? Or it's "old technology". Plus, I think they're taking us for idiots by naming the "iPhone 7S" the "iPhone 8". Why? What problems did this solve other than to annoy your fan base?

Smart watch is still a niche market, it isn't take off as smartphone. Pretty much whole smart watch stuff is flop, including Apple Watch.

Well, Samsung has the Galaxy 8 and Note 8 out, so Apple probably wouldn't want a lower number :p

Interestingly, Samsung has for years called their predicted folding phone by the designation: Galaxy X.

Flop by your definition or not, Apple Watch is here to stay. Apple will be doing more interesting integration with health related services in the future.

Still a niche market. Apple doesn't even put a separate category for Apple Watch on their financial report indicated that. Smart Watch market is not taking off as Apple or other OEMs wished. You don't see people wear smart watch like people carrying smartphone.

Apple “lumped” a number of categories of products into “other”, they don’t even break out iphone sales.

IMO, Apple Watch is beyond a niche market, but your definitions will vary...especially if you are comparing it to a very large category with different metrics.

The jury is out on “at the cost of the viewing” experience; until one gets their hands on one.
It was already shown at the keynote. One of the game controls was chopped off and when watching movies, you either view it in a smaller size and lose the viewable area the ears or watch it with chopped off content.

I don't have an issue with this as you can resize the screen below the notch. YMMV on how you view this.

But then you are wasting part of your screen thanks to the notch. It already has black bars at the top and bottom thanks to the aspect ratio. Cut off the notch and ears and it will view SMALLER than a 4.7 inch iPhone.

okay, but with a different resolution. To me, it's still not an issue. (Not "theoretically" at this point in time, because I'm not getting the X).

The point is that that notch compromised the viewing experience whereas a generic slab would have resulted in a bigger screen.

But it’s not an issue for me is the bottom line. If it’s an issue for you that issue goes into the equation for determination of the applicability of the iphone x to you.

There is no point factoring subjectivity into this equation as all future iPhones will come with this notch like it or not as its here to stay. So if you want an iPhone, you have to bear that notch. That notch was only implemented so that people know its an iPhone. In the process, they ruined customer experience for many. Not a single customer would have found a problem with a generic slab apart from snobs who want to brag they own a 1k smartphone to the world. So which is better?

Subjectivity is the entire essence of buying a car and phone. I can’t blame Apple for not wanting a generic slab look and the way they did it, does not ruin anything for me. Only the sales will tell for how many the notch “ruined” the experience.

Some big mistakes made on X from design to marketing. Jobs said, the user should not be aware of underlying engineering. X UI now has a top and bottom. Unfortunately, the notch is an idea Jobs would have shot down quickly but may have lasting negative consequences for Apple going forward. Delay and confusion are not something anyone wants to see with a company loaded with fast chips and addicting apps.

Not necessarily. I am buying the X despite not liking the notch. I am dying for an upgrade after over 3 years of underwhelming iPhone releases and a notch won't get in the way of that.
