Apple has added sixth-generation 9.7-inch iPad models to its refurbished store in the United States for the first time since their release in March 2018. Prices are discounted by 14 to 15 percent compared to the equivalent brand new models.

The following configurations are available in Space Gray, Silver, or Gold:32GB / Wi-Fi is $279 refurbished ($50 off - $329 brand new)
128GB / Wi-Fi is $369 refurbished ($60 off - $429 brand new)
32GB / Wi-Fi + Cellular is $389 refurbished ($70 off - $459 brand new)
128GB / Wi-Fi + Cellular is $479 refurbished ($80 off - $559 brand new)Orders placed today are estimated to be delivered in the first week of December. Quantities are limited, however, so we recommend acting fast or using Refurb Tracker to monitor when inventory is replenished.

Apple says certified refurbished iPad models are thoroughly inspected, tested, cleaned, and repackaged in a new white box, with all accessories and documentation included. Every refurbished iPad receives a new battery and a new outer shell, making it virtually indistinguishable from a brand new iPad.

Every refurbished iPad is covered by Apple's standard one-year warranty effective on the date the tablet is delivered. The coverage can be extended to two years from the refurbished purchase date with AppleCare+ for iPad, which costs $69 or $3.49 per month for the the 9.7-inch iPad in the United States.

While certified refurbished iPads represent a decent opportunity for savings, better deals were offered on the sixth-generation 9.7-inch iPad on Black Friday last week. Walmart and Target, for example, offered the Wi-Fi model with 32GB of storage for just $249 brand new, less than Apple's refurbished price of $279.

Those interested in a better deal on the sixth-generation iPad can monitor the price charts in our continuously updated Apple Deals roundup.

I got my 128GB for $329 brand new.

Does everything an iPad Pro does for less. I can even add a pencil and keyboard and still spend less than an iPad Pro.

Apple still hasn't give me reason to spend 2x for a device that does the exact same thing. TruTone displays and bigger speakers isn't going to cut it.

People complain that Apple is making entry-level iPads prohibitively expensive with the most recent release, but these refurbished devices are good options!

If you need/want an iPad for media consumption and creative work, you can pick up one that is practically new for $279—less than an Apple Watch, HomePod, or mid-range iPod touch (when those received more focus) and more capable than each.

OMG it MUST mean they are struggling to sell the new iPad Pros.

They didn't say anything about iPad pros. Those are a different category, and my guess is that they are selling pretty well, at least for now, because it is an expensive, but awesome product.

Regular iPads on the other hand, are being sold for quite a long time, first with an A9 and now with an A10 SoC

I have purchased refurbished iPads directly from Apple and they are literally indistinguishable from new. The only way to tell it's refurbished is that the box it comes in says it's refurbished. They come with a full Apple warranty and the option to purchase AppleCare.

If you buy a refurbished iPad from some other seller, it is probably a used product (e.g. an iPad that someone sells to Gazelle when they upgrade to a different model) that is wiped with a cloth and minimally tested or inspected. It usually comes with a warranty backed by the seller, not Apple, and is not eligible for AppleCare. You're taking a chance, and it might work out great or might be disappointing.

Still a really good deal when compared to full retail prices.

I will consider picking one up, although I really want a new iPad Mini to replace my aging iPad Mini 2.

Target last weekend had the 32GB WiFi for $249. I was not sure at the time if that was the best deal but so far, even with all the sales announcements, I have not seen a better price.

I have purchased many refurbished products from Apple, and they have all been great. You are correct, out of the box, you would never know that they are refurbished.

In many ways, Apple's refurbished devices are better than buying new due to extensive testing that is done.

You'll start seeing better prices once the shopping season is over. All these on sale stuff right now will be the same price or even cheaper next year.

You really have to be careful with Target on items like that. I saw them advertised at that price and went to get one, but what they actually had in stock was the previous generation iPad with A9. They also pulled a similar stunt with the Series 2 watch when the Series 3 had just been released. I would assume the majority of consumers would never know the difference.

I think it's great Apple is offering a range of iPads.

I picked up a 6th gen iPad for my wife who will use it primarily for note taking. I grabbed an 11 inch iPad Pro for myself since I need a little more horsepower for photo editing.

They're selling REALLY well, considering mine has been on backorder for almost a month now...

Truetone displays, bigger speakers, considerably faster CPU, considerably faster GPU, neural engine, Tru Motion screen, now USB-C with high quality video out, better cameras, more RAM.

Just because your needs are met by the iPad (which is great! What a value considering what you used to get for $499!) doesn't mean everyone else's are.
Your definition of "exact" may need a little work...

I am still quite happy with this iPad mini 4
These things really retain their value since another Mini was never released. I did consider getting one, but they still cost to much when the 9.7 is so cheap now.

I think what end up happening was the iPad Mini sold really well, it was cannibalizing iPad sales and the Mini's margins are probably not as good. That is one reason why the iPad Mini 3 didn't even get a spec bump from the iPad Mini 2.

It is a shame, as own a full size and mini iPad, I much prefer the smaller size.

While I did pick up a new Pro 10.5 256GB, I’m still looking to replace my old 128GB Air 2 which has the button sticking and the screen popping up with a similar model (since I still have the Smart Case and a bunch of screen protectors). Since they told me a replacement would be $300, I might look into replacing it with one of these instead somewhere down the line.

I am still quite happy with this iPad mini 4 - which I picked up off the refurbished store a few years ago.

Apple Refurb is almost always the best way to go, in my opinion.
My wife still uses her iPad Mini 4 all the time because she prefers the smaller size, but we picked up a 6th gen 9.7 inch iPad because she wanted to use it for note taking at work.

I was waiting to see if Apple updated the Mini with Pencil support at the October iPad event before buying the 9.7 inch iPad for her.

The 6th gen 9.7 inch iPad is a little thicker that the iPad Air 2, so it won't fit in the same case (unless maybe if the case is soft and has broken in a little).

$390 for 32GB is still too high
$279 refurbished
$329 MSRP new
$250-ish on Amazon and elsewhere.

**** it is? Thanks for letting me know, that makes me glad now I ended up picking the Pro because I assumed this would fit. I may just go for the replacement through Apple then, I definitely want to hang onto another iPad for media consumption and as much as I like my new Pro I’m not ready to let go of the classic iPad size, haha.

It’s the leather Smart Case which probably is broken in a bit but probably not enough to accommodate a thicker device.
