Remember folks, especially in our current political times, the more locked down your devices are, the easier it's going to be to control you.
I’ll take a locked down device over one that has been compromised by government regulations. What I see is the more regulations the more you become the product.
What you see, how you see it, when you see it ... those are all things you want to have control over.

Apple has shown they are perfectly happy to bend the knee here in the USA.
As opposed to having over the top draconian regulations?
You really think having them fully dictate your locked down experience is going to end well?
It has so far.

if Apple doesn't want to play by the rules they are welcome to leave. undercooked Tim can serve more plates to his best buddy 🤭
Certainly hope you living by your own words. Apple is playing by the rules, hence why the EU has a less complete product than the rest of the world.

Likely to continue for the foreseeable future. The future is here now.

None of Apple's main competitors, whether from Asia or the US, are currently struggling because of EU's laws.
On the other hand, having an iPhone doesn't guarantee any more privacy or safety, since we all use the same apps whatever the OS. Is Apple blocking Facebook ? Tik-tok ? or even X ? No of course not. These networks can thrive on the iPhone, stealing away your attention, personal data, and soul. All they want as long as Apple gets its share.
Apple has said it’s struggling to meet the new laws without compromising user privacy. I don’t believe Google and Facebook are concerned about that since their raison d’être is to acquire and sell that data. So it doesn’t surprise me that competitors are having an easier time with this. They just don’t care about privacy.

Apple implemented App Tracking Transparency. Facebook was furious. I don’t remember Facebook being upset about running their app on Android. So I have to believe running apps on iOS is generally safer than Android.

Sharing your password with a competitor's service or accessory product.

If Apple can seamlessly "share" all of my passwords to their smartwatch or online "cloud" services , so may someone else. So I don't have to type in my passwords all again on my non-Apple smartwatch.
So use a cross-platform app like 1Password. Apple’s own passwords manager is cross-platform, I believe?

Interesting they mentioned porn.

If there’s one industry that makes a huge effort to ensure their content is available to anyone, on any device, it’s those selling porn.

So when I hear people complain about web Apps not being good enough to meet their needs (when their own App is not much more than a web wrapper) I tell them to look at porn in your browser. These companies can make fully-featured web pages but apparently developers are unable to so they NEED access to their own store. 🙄

I’m fully with Apple on this. The App Store one I can see opposing arguments to, but when it comes to feature delays and privacy concerns the EU is overstepping. Bureaucrats have shown time and again that they don’t understand tech, so it’s concerning when they want to impose their demands while ignoring any legitimate warnings about it - especially when it comes to putting user data at risk of breach.
This is where I am at. I agree they had to try something out to see how it would work but the idea that apple should be forced to make their products work with competing devices when that's not their business model makes it so Apple has to rely on MSFT for product updates and what not. I think that's a terrible side effect.

Apple can get around this by simply warning users of the risks, having them agree to the specific terms and then allowing them to proceed anyway. Most people know it's terrible but I think Apple needs to stop infantilizing people so much. I realize it's in their business interests to infantilize people....but the EU doesn't want that.

Hello Sniffies is a great example of a well done porn/dating web app.

Most definately they are not. They were, yes. No longer. A lot this does not make the international press.

I take very little from anecdotes like this honestly.

Why?

Because my MAGA relative says this sort of stuff all the time about Seattle, even when I'm literally walking around downtown Seattle telling him basically nothing he's saying is accurate (he's just getting it from Fox News).

At some point people will stop accepting Apple being petty and will chose the one other alternative (or maybe it makes room for a competitor (we can only hope)).

However, Apple is not truly leaving and Apple will eventually bring their services because they wouldn't want to lose out on cash just because they have to share the cake with alternatives.

You're judging your quality of life by a handful of smartphone features the "evil EU" is withholding from you. I bet that 99% of the world population would like to have your problems.
I am judging what? Smart phone features do not impinge on anyone’s quality of life, mine yours or anyone else’s - that’s quite a reach there.

The EU isn’t evil, just wasteful, incompetent, does not deliver on what it has promised and is utterly useless. It’s approach is typical - telling us what is good for us, trying to protect us, blah ,blah. I’ll judge Apple on it’s merits or lacktherof - don’t need their help.

If you love the EU, great. I don’t. I’m living the dream.

Apple simply doesn't want fair competition. Under Cook, the company has become a prime example of a monopolist.

It's time to demand that no more official phones in EU politics & government agencies come from Apple... if they are financed by taxes.

“Fair competition” in EU speak means we can’t compete so let’s drag the winners down so they can’t win, either.

The EU Commission has replied Apple.

Good.

The only way to deal with behavior like Apple is displaying is to forcefully and publicly push back, especially when Apple tries to twist the narratives in their favor.

Apple has become tedious on this topic.

I appreciate this being said:

“This undermines the company’s narrative of wanting to be fully cooperative with the Commission.”

He said Apple had snubbed the Commission’s efforts to engage in positive talks to help them comply with the DMA.

“Results of this positive engagement? After two months, Apple came back and asked us to scrap everything,” he said, adding: “We of course fully get companies want to defend their profits at all costs, but that’s not what the DMA is about.”

Don’t think Apple will compromise on core principles. Once they do it sets a precedent going forward. So yeah I think Apple will forego some of the birthday cake.

The only way to deal with this is head-on like Apple is doing and showing the world the hypocrisy of the eu government and the DMA.

The predictions of the eu being a tech desert due to over-regulations are already showing.

The EU Commission has replied Apple.
And note there is zero push back on the points Apple makes at all. Because the EU can't argue them. Just "not true". Why? Because they think they know better than Apple. They don't.

If consumers want an open option they have it. The EU is taking the closed option away that millions prefer, along with Apple users's privacy, safety and security. The EU should be ashamed. I look forward to the EU blaming Apple for the results of their regulations. Remember in the EU, regulations cannot fail or be responsible for negative consequences, only the regulated can fail the regulations.

This is absolutely not what is happening here. The EU is about to introduce a powerful privacy-invading law called ChatControl that will be constantly scanning all our messages and photos ( for europeans), and they need all computing devices to have weakened privacy for that. See my message earlier here : https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ys.2467466/page-5?post=34178232#post-34178232

Exactly this. People will vote with their wallets down the line. So far, features like 'live translation' and mirroring iPhones to MacOS are missing only from Apple's devices. Nothing major that is a deal breaker, but all the small things tend to pile up and make delaying an upgrade or swapping brands a more appealing idea.

Personally I am waiting with my 14PM until I see if screen mirroring comes or not. I can't believe that my S21 had it with Windows 10, but Apple does not want to enable it for my MBP + iPhone combo. Having read the DMA quite a few times, there is absolutely nothing there to prevent them except their own fear that they may be required to expose an API or let MS' PhoneLink app to do the same.
