Carriers already do that; no need for Apple to get in the business...that said, no one needs to be upgrading yearly.

I always hand-down my phones or sell locally when upgrading. These trade-in deals suck!

Some of us need the greatest and latest and I'm pretty sure most of those carrier deals involve bill credits, no thanks.

Samsung's trade in credits are so high that it could match what you get from a third party and almost 0 effort other than returning the "old" phone.

I already made a $ 5,- offer but unfortunate no reply yet 😜
The day my iPhone aren't valued more, I won't sell it anyway.

We can always use old iOS devices as media-player's, or something similar.
My iPad mini 5 is more or less just a meditation timer etc. today.
But that is enough valuable for me to keep it as, and loose whatever few 💰💶 I could get for it.
I will keep my iPhone mini too the day it won't serve as a phone anymore.

Other phone vendors like "here is 1k off for a 5 year old phone sitting in your drawer (exaggerating)"
A friend of mine did exactly this. They turned in his wife’s iPhone 4S that was sitting in a drawer for $1000 off a 16 Pro. I traded in a XR for my 13 Pro at Verizon for $800 off my 13 Pro a few years ago.

Now that I think of it, I’m not sure what Best Buy gets out of the deal.

As someone who upgrades every year, after looking at the trade in, I will be keeping my iPhone 16 Pro Max 512gb for at least 2-4 years. Or maybe even longer

Exactly. Phones have gotten so good that they will still be useful as computers for a long time. As long as all the software on them aren’t subscription time bombs.

They do, but Apple low-balls you. Don't trade in to Apple.
This is sort of a silly take. You're not wrong, but "Apple low-balls you" isn't it. Selling anything direct to another person generally gets you close to market value; selling to a company that is only buying so they can turn it around for a profit always gets you much less than market value. It doesn't matter if it's Apple computer or a Ford truck or a Cal Ripken Topps baseball card.

You should use the word "lowers", not "changes". No reason to withhold information like that!

But not everything was lowered. From the posted list, trade values for the Apple Watch Ultra 2, Apple Watch Series 8, and MacBook Pro were increased. It's also possible that values for some other products not posted went up. Therefore, using the word "changes" was appropriate.

Only two articles rose a bit. The rest where all lowered. So, yes he’s right by saying that 😊
Three, not two, in a list of 13 examples. It is inaccurate to say they lowered trade-in values when they did, indeed, change them in both directions.

The table MR shared has 13 devices. It looks like there are 77 total devices in the trade-in program, so we don't know the total number that have risen, fallen or stayed the same.

Would rather trade in to apple than get scammed by a buyer on ebay, after 15% selling fee and $20 shipping.

There are better options than eBay...almost any option is better. If selling online, I typically use Swappa, but generally prefer to sell locally and in-person...no taxes and no fees.

The gap between Apple’s trade-in values and eBay prices for the same items used to be small enough that I’d just take the lower Apple trade-in price to save myself the hassle of selling on eBay.

That gap is getting bigger. I’m inclined now to upgrade less often and to sell my Apple gear on eBay or similar.
Yeah but hassle and eBay fees and hassle…

Minor reductions to an already bad trade in value. Always better to sell old device somewhere else. Only benefit is the convenience Apple offers. Surprised to see that Series 9 is not in the list.

The values for Macs are just insulting. I have an M1 iMac here with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD, and the maximum they'd value it at is... $305? Good lord. I can get literally 3x that much selling it to someone. I get that the trade-ins are always a bit low, but that's absurd.
