Looking at the trade in offerings from Apple one thing is clear:

Apple gear doesn’t hold value longer than the competition and their own list proofs it.
Uhh, no. Go to eBay, search for the device, and filter your search for Sold Items only. That will give you a real-world look at what people have recently paid for a given piece of hardware. Prices vary, obviously, but you will get a pretty good idea.

The trade in values Apple offers prove nothing, except that they're charging you a hefty fee for the convenience of not having to sell it yourself.

What are the trade in values from Samsung, Huawei, Xiamoi etc? Do you have data that proves they are better?
My guess is no, you don’t have data.

… so if Apple sold you an iPhone for 5k and takes it back for 5 bucks, it’s only worth 5 bucks, right?
The only thing proven here is that you don’t understand perceived value is what actually matters.
5 bucks from Apple is as much an insult as 300 for a MBP. Look at real world prices or discounts by the manufacturer/brand and you’ll see how well Apples devices keep their value compared to, for example, Samsung.

You should use the word "lowers", not "changes". No reason to withhold information like that!
Ooooonly that that would be a lie, because a whooping two items increased basically insignificantly.
Still, that would be a factually wrong title compared to now.

What does that have to do with those poor offerings from Apple?
Just because the company you bought a thing from would buy it back for far less doesn’t make that thing worth less… were is the logic behind that?

I could for example trade in my iPhone 13 Pro for a pixel 9 pro from Google and get three times as much as I get from Apple.

Don’t believe me? Try it with your iPhone at Apple and do the same at Google and see the difference yourself 😊

but how much does Google does Google give you for a Pixel? that is the real comparison aka Apples to Apples

Could that be because Apple doesn’t really care but Google is very happy to not just sell you their phone, but also throw you a bone and make it easier AND take a potential second hand iPhone off the market?
The reason isn’t the value of the device but the incentive of each company to do what they do. Google desperately wants to have more of their android phones in the world AND they don’t really care about Pixel profits (because they really don’t need to), but they do care about market share and iOS users switching, so they make it more appealing to do so.
Apple, not so much. They offer what they do because they know people will take it, Google does what they do because they hope people get hooked by the offer. Being more „generous“ than Apple is a tactical decision and says absolutely 0 about device value.

Also, by saying Google gives you x3 as much, didn’t you just prove that Apples offers are artificially low? So, what’s your point?

They asked you for data to compare these prices to.
You say this proves something, then do it. Provide the data and prove that iPhones and other Apple products don’t hold their value as well as other brands products.

The gap between Apple’s trade-in values and eBay prices for the same items used to be small enough that I’d just take the lower Apple trade-in price to save myself the hassle of selling on eBay.

That gap is getting bigger. I’m inclined now to upgrade less often and to sell my Apple gear on eBay or similar.
Watch out, eBay is going to send 1099s this year. Huge pain.

I always sell my old Apple devices second hand or give them to a family member. The trade-in value is always lower than what I can sell it for. Let someone else get the joy I did out of the product.

Still surprised at how well the 15ProMax battery is doing after more than two years. Sad to see the trade-in go down by $20, tho. It should go _up_ to keep up with inflation, right? 🍸😸 plus I have a blue one and you can't get that now.

My launch day 15PM battery capacity is at 85% and will probably need a battery replacement before the 2 year mark. I’m holding onto mine for another year, so I’m looking forward to a battery replacement in the next few months. Also the 15 series wasn’t released 2 years ago (September 2023).
