Yes, if the problems are barely noticeable, it could be a keeper. I just hope it doesn't degrade over time, as also seems to happen. I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but, these displays have caused me and lots of others so much grief! I'm glad yours is much better. I wish I felt confident enough to try another 23", but, been there done that.

No issue here..

Just got my new 23inch display delivered..

No noticable pink colour mentioned by others, no dead pixels, in fact.. its..

Woooooow ! :D
Nice.. basically.

(The box was open when I go it though..strange.. although everything was still sealed etc.. the delivery guy said I better check it while he was there since he did't think there was anything in the box.. since even though the box is huge the display is really light.)

That was a lucky thing that happened in that instance. Think it would have given me a sinking feeling in the stomach at first.

Something that has been mentioned many times of the forum, is those that tend to post more often about products are those with a complaint. So it makes it very difficult t know the actual magnitude of the 23" problem. Apple has statistics, but chances are they won't release them.

I just got an ACD 23" after evaluating other alternatives. I ended up with this model as I was not able to resist the design and display quality an ACD 23" provides. I am pleased to say there is no pink tint, no dead pixels, no stuck pixels, and no defects as far as I inspect closely. I think Apple has fixed those problems. My 15" PB is now connected to this 23" ACD in the clam shell mode and my 20" ACD is coupled with my 12" PB in the display spanning mode.

does the 12" do a good job with the 20" and have you tried it with the 23"?
i have couple of thousand dollars coming my way soon and since my overseas plans fell though i'm going to blow it on a display. only i can't decide which one.

The Al 12" PB supports 20" and 23" ACD equally well as long as it has a mini DVI port. I think the recent 12" model will come with Nvidia 5200 card which is decent for a portable notebook computer and have an ample power to support native resolutions for 20" and 23" models. The reason I am using 23" with my 15" is I am using 15" mostly at home as a desk top (even though it is sitting on iCurve off the desk). As a desktop replace, it deserves a larger screen.

My 12" model will come with me when I travel (usually 2 to 4 nights per trip); so, it will stay less time than my 15" at home. That is the only reason for coupling 12" with 20" ACD. I don't want to plug in and out too many times as I want to prevent wear and tear.

Now my desk is full and no space and I had to move my Ti PB to the next desk which is also full with 2 notebooks with all those accessories such as LaCie external hard drives. At this moment, I have reached the point I cannot buy anthing else for now unless I open up the desktop real estate.

excellent, i was only asking because i've heard a few reports that the 12" runs the 23" a bit choppy.
thanks for giving me such a detailed answer :)

With most specifications between the Apple 23" and the Dell 24" being
relatively equal, I must be objective about one major design issue that is not
merely cosmetic.

The passive venting slots in the back of the Dell display may eventually cause
dust accumulation issues inside the display housing while the Apple displays
are virtually a sealed system.

There will be some tradeoffs between these two displays given the $600
price difference, but this is something you must decide for yourself.

Those of you who just got 23" ACDs and say there are no noticeable defects, can you post the first six characters from the serial number here? I'm curious to see when they were manufactured. But, it seems like a lot of people who claim there are no problems actually do have defective monitors and just can't see it.

I just bought a 23" ACD. It is perfect. Now I can enjoy clear and crisp images on 20" and 23" for my PBs. My 23" does not have any dead pixel nor any tint. The first six digit of the serious # is 2A5042. I got it at CompUSA because of its return policy and that chain only carry a few ACDs so you can bet they have a fresh supply from Apple. You can see my both ACDs in the Picture form on this board (under PowerBook set up thread).

I also considered that when I picked an Apple 23" ACD. I was leaning toward Dell 24" because it is cheaper. But, after comparing 23" ACD with Dell 24", I came to the conclusion I want the best design/package for my LCD. I totally agree those vents on the Dell will take a toll on the unit longevity, unless you have 10 air cleaners running in your room (I am running 3 air cleaners in my room and there is still some dust on my desk).

Because of this, you would think that the Apple displays would get very warm, but I do not find this to be the case. I used mine for about 8 hours straight yesterday without turning it off or putting it to sleep. I felt of it right before going to bed and it was cool to the touch. Apple has definitely done something right.

That is good news to hear. Again Apple represents quality.

My guess is that the Apple displays use the casing as a heat sink to help with passive cooling.

This does not however justify nearly double the price tag between the Apple 23" and the Dell 24"

The Apple 23" simply should not have any quality control issues when you consider the premium you pay for their design.

In my situation, that price difference allows me to own a great 24" display with a standard 3 year warranty AND also purchase a good M-Audio 1814 F/W audio interface so I can actually soon begin to use my system for it's intended purpose.

The two 23" Apple displays I had did get quite warm when on for a few hours, they weren't what I would consider cool by any means. It is mostly a completely closed case, unlike the Dell.

The Dell 24" is just slightly warm on the top rear, but nothing remarkable.

Please note that I did not post in favor of the Dell 24" to put down the
Apple 23"

The Apple 23" is beautiful, but the Dell 24' offers a considerable value
as well for those on tighter budgets.

Both displays are a pleasure to use with any Apple CPU and OSX

I'm very close to buying the Dell, as Apple has done nothing about the 23" defects. Is the brightness a problem on the Dell? I've seen people say it's just VERY bright, even when turned down to the lowest level. How do you find it?

I will be buying a 20" by the end of this summer along with my newly traded 12" Powerbook!

I think Apple fixed that problem with the 23". I have a new 23" and it is a perfect LCD monitor money can buy. No dead pixel, no stuck pixel, no pink tints.

Just picked up a 23" Apple Display yesterday. $1299 edu. I'm somewhat in a state of shock, since the biggest screen I had previously owned was the 17" Apple Display (upgraded from a 15" just 1 year before). Putzing around at 1920x1200 certainly reveals the limitations of a dual 1.8 w/Radeon 9800 SE, but the HDTV 720P and 1080i content looks incredible (the latter ever so slightly shy of the broadcast 24fps). While I don't game much on a mac (have a PSP now), it was really "trippy" playing Battlefield 1942 and Halo at full resolution. Doom 3 was somewhat choppy at 1600x1200, but at least I can see now why some people consider Doom 3 "so immersive".

You know, the funny thing is that it wasn't until after owning the display for a day, when I came back from the bathroom to see Panther's built-in "cosmos" screensaver just sprawling out on my desk, that I really bonded with my new purchase.

Never thought a chump like me would get to own one of these things.

I really want to own a big screen like this one day. Sigh.

Yes indeed, it certainly is easy to feel spoiled ROTTEN with all this screen real estate coming up from my Sony 17" CRT.
I've been playing with a few fantastic display wallpapers and it just kicks butt watching a movie hooked up through my sound console.

At least we're able to help others decide with these reviews.

In my humble opinion the 5 best choices out there for price/performance

in order of affordability are:

Dell 20" 2005 FPW ( Prices vary $400 - $550)
Apple 20" cinema display $699-$799
Dell 24" 2405 FPW HD display (Prices vary ALOT! $799-$1049)
Apple 23" HD cinema display $1299-$1499
Apple 30" HD cinema display . $2699 education

Let me warn you not to watch any HDTV or h.264 clips, if you haven't done so already and plan to enjoy DVDs on your new screen. After seeing the HD movie trailers, and a 5 minute Lord of the Rings clip, I had such a headache trying to watch some DVDs. They were so blurry and pixellated. The day I bought the screen I spent the night at my gf's place since she lives near the Apple Store. The next day after I took the display home she called up complaining that something was wrong with her digital cable TV. She had only watched a handful of H.264 clips on my screen -10-15 minutes total - but I guess that was enough to recalibrate her brain to a higher definition setpoint.

As for the 23" Apple Display's value relative to competing products, I factored in Apple's high resell value (as if I would ever sell it!), due both to the name and the slick low-footprint design, into my decision to spend the extra couple hundred.

In hindsight though I probably would have been just as happy with the Apple 20" at $700 edu. 1600x1200 turns out to be where it's at for my needs. Even though I hardly ever play Doom 3, I was pleased to find out that it plays about as well at 1600x1200 on my dual 1.8/Radeon 9800se as it did at 1280x1024.

Gotta check out the "Marine Aquarium" screensaver at 1920x1200!

I saw a refurb 30" listed at the Apple Store yesterday for $2299. Suppose that as long as one purchased it will a G5 Power Mac and AppleCare, what a great deal.
