Nice pictures FFTT. The Dell not bad, but not convinced. What is the monitor next to the Dell and then the next PC?

The monitor to the right of my Dell is my 7 year old 17" Sony Multiscan200ES
The CPU to the right is my 7 year old beige 300 MHz G3 minitower.

I waited a year before my financial situation was right to purchase that ACD. Worth the wait ;)

Now that is sweet! Which LCD do you have there? I ordered the 20" Cinema display with my Power Mac. It is here, but the system will not be here until Tuesday or Wednesday. :(

Woooow! That's pretty! *drools* Now I wanna buy one... :-( I'm still saving money for one...Hopefully I'll be able to buy one by next month!

And for all you folks trying to decide between a Dell and an Apple display: if you're on a budget and want extras, go for the Dell, and if you're a "professional" and an Apple loyalist, of course go for the Apple Cinema Displays! Or just make your OWN choice; don't let anyone else tell you what to buy with your own money! This is especially important if you're talking to APPLE LOYALISTS here in MacRumors. :-D Because I happen to be one of those people... :)

That really is a beautiful Apple 23" setup, no doubt!

No one here can argue about the ACD's curb appeal.

I was honestly ready to go for a 20" Apple @ $699 education,
until I found out that I could get the 24" Dell WS with more features, 3 year warranty and better specifications for less than $900 shipped.

When I considered the Apple 23" @ $1499 education, I simply couldn't
justify the extra $600 for the design.

Please also consider that I'm POOR and I also just spent another $1941.00
on the G5 2.0 dually.

I tried here to show a somewhat straight on view to illustrate one good feature. At normal working distance, the edges nearly disapper into the background of your visable workspace.
I also can't wait to try the picture in picture and picture by picture features once I have the time.

It's a 23" ;)

Very nice. I did not have the extra money for the 23" Cinema display. That is something that I can always upgrade in the future. Since I will have the Radeon 9650 on my Power Mac, I can go for the upgrade to the 30". (as he yells to his wife about his birthday coming up Monday) :D

Maybe it shouldn't have been a yell to the wife. She might surprise you with something nice eon your birthday. A 30" would be awesome. Happy Birthday. ;)

How did you get the 24 inch Dell so cheap?

see the title, but seriously...I can't get it for less than $1000...are you applying certain coupons? Edu discount?

The 30" display reference was a joke, unfortunately, since I just ordered the Mac last week. My 20" Cinema display is already here. It would be nice to have the 30" display, but that will have to be an upgrade goal down the road. Hopefully I can get her switched in the coming months and I can order a new machine for her. Maybe I could squeeze in that 30" display or something. :D

Education, small business or corporate discounts at Dell

Your school or business must have a Dell membership ID#
to take advantage of Dell's discounts.
You won't see these discounted prices posted openly on thier
web pages. You'll have to call and speak with a rep by phone.

Luckily my wife and I came to Apple together. Actually I think she mentioned it first. Still an Apple family since 1983. Hopefully your wife will want to switch soon, can't imagine that she hasn't seen the advantages. Just think maybe the sooner she's convinced the sooner that 30" will be on the way. Good luck.

Also 37th Birthday Kerry, you are just a Spring Chicken. ;)

Wow, that Dell monitor actually looks better than I expected. Nice low-profile frame, although the base looks a bit clunky, but, otherwise, not as bad as I expected and others claim.

The "pink tint" is not the only problem with Apple's 23" displays, by the way. There are several other defects that seem to be on all of them, such as washed out edges along the left and ride sides, dingy yellow edges, color inconsistencies, banding near the center and ghosting that gets worse as time passes. It doesn't matter when the monitor was made or what the serial number is. They're all defective.

So, be wary about getting on of these monitors until Apple addresses the defects. I had two 23" ACDs. While I loved the design of the monitor itself, they do not perform as advertised at all, and I had to return both of them.

Does anyone know if the 20" cinema displays have this same problem or is this only an issue with the 23" ACD?

They're not all defective...

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, because I was in the same camp until I got my new 23". I went through two 20" ACD's (pre aluminum) with stuck and dead pixels and got a bad taste in my mouth because of it. After all the problems I read about I was VERY apprehensive about buying another. I purposefully bought my new ACD at CompUSA so that I could have 21 days to return it if there were any problems. I even spent an extra $159 for the "insurance policy".

Got it home and as I mentioned before it's perfect. No pink tint, no washed out edges, no banding, and no dead or stuck pixels. They are not all defective, but I will say that it's a crap shoot. I got lucky.

I can't say from experience, but, from what I've seen on Apple's boards, there have been a LOT more problems with the 23" displays than there have been with the 20" or even the 30" displays.

Yes, you did get VERY lucky. I bought two 23" displays and had them both replaced twice (so, I've had a total of 6 displays) and all were bad. Some worse than others, but, all had defects. I'm off Apple displays right now, I've had too much bad luck with them and think Apple is shirking their responsibility to fix it.

I have heard of these problems for a while now. Surprised that Apple hasn't fixed it by now.

It seems 23" ACD is a mixed bag, while overall consensus on 20" & 30" is very positive. Is there a way to find out if Apple's ACD manufacturer has done corrective actions to remedy the manufacturing or design flaws now? Or, is it reasonable to assume there has not been any change in manufacturing/design at the facotry for 23" ACD? I already have a 20" ACD and I am looking for a little larger wide screen ACD (so 23" ACD is a good candidate). I can go for a Dell 24"; but, I like ACD because it does not have any vent.

Do you have a CompUSA in your area? My local store said they have a 21 day return policy. Take one home and see if it works for you. If you favor the ACD, I think you owe it to yourself to give it a chance.

Not that I'm aware of. Apple has said nothing, even their tech reps in AppleCare pretend as though they've never heard of this problem before. Duh! Just read your own forums! But reports that are allowed to remain in the Apple forums indicate there are still people getting defective equipment.

Me too! They dropped the ball on this one.
Hey, I have to come clean on something here. I just calibrated my monitor and although I didn't notice it before, I did indeed notice a push toward red/pink - which I successfully adjusted. I thought it looked great before. It looks even better now :)

What about the other defects this display has -- do you see those? My 23" ACDs did not have the pink cast problem either, they both had the dingy-yellow edges (left/right) and the color fades out along the left/right, too.

How do the blue-and-white lines in iTunes Library look when you expand the window to the full width of the monitor? Is the color of the light-blue shading in the list consistent from edge to edge, or does it fade out to white or gray along the edges?

No problems on the edges with this one.

The blue lines in the iTunes playlist are already pretty light, but indeed they do get a bit lighter on the extreme left side of the display. The right side is fine. For another example though, I expanded my Quicken window which also uses blue and white lines in the register, albeit a darker blue. The change is not perceptive.

My standards are pretty high and I'm extatic about this display. I could still take it back but I won't. For my eyes it's perfect and it was worth every dime.
