The 23" is certainly attractive now, but the standard 1 year warranty is still a deal breaker for me, when the rest of the industry offers 3 without having to buy a warranty extension or an entire computer.

The 23" is a piece of crap, stay FAR away from it. There are literally hundereds of posts on it in the Apple support forums. There are uneven backlighting and pink cast issues. Seemingly normal 23" displays get worse over time and develop the problems. I bought one and returned it in with an hour. Everything white looked pink and everything grey look purple. There are few reports that recent builds have solved the pink cast but there are still problems with uneven backlighting. The 20" and 30" have none of these problems.

yes sadly the dell screens are still better value for money, but at least apple have lowered the price a bit, it will stop scaring away buyers.

I bought one of those Dell monitors and am quite impressed with it. I got a 20" model for under $500. I still think the Apple monitors are too much. Plus I really like how I can switch between DVI, S-Video, and Composite video on my Dell. Hate to say I bought a Dell but it is a good monitor.

Looks OK. They still are a tad overpriced. The 20" is still $300 and change more expensive then Dell's 20" And the 23" is $500 more expensive then Dell's 24"

*shrugs* I'm going to wait until I can double up on a Dell coupon Deal and get the 24" for around $800 which is a steal.

I agree, I'm buying the Dell as soon as it drops below $800. The reviews on the monitor have been amazing, and it seems to have a super low dead pixel rate. The fact that it has component inputs is just awesome.

mmmm Cinema Display goodness. Good thing I have my IT department prepped to buy a new Dual G5 and ACD in Q2. Looks like Dell has been lowering their prices on displays as well. I know Apple wants to charge a premium but from what I've been reading Dell's quality is comparable. I'll still have my company but the Apple display just on principle.

The power of Dell. At work I use the 20" wide Dell monitor with my Powermac and it's image quality is actually better than my 20" Apple Cinema (1Gen). It's enclosure is not as nice, but for the price I think it's worth it. Another nice thing about the Dell is that you can plug more than one computer into it since it has DVI and VGA; so I can have my Mac on one and my FreeBSD on the other. :) Add a USB switch and there you go.

I figured this was going to happen when they didn't offer a 17", too bad these prices weren't offered to begin with.

I have a Dell 19" LCD, and it has so many more features than the Apple monitors. The Dell pivots 90 degrees for portrait mode (XLR8YOURMAC.com reported OS 10.4 is to support portrait mode)
I tried the portrait mode as a default at work for two days (connected to an XP machine). My eyes got sore. After switching back on day 3 things were ok again. That obviously wasn't much of a decent experimental setting, but I'm pretty sure the effect was due to the rotated screen. My guess is that pixel layout is optimized for the standard landscape setting.

I haven't googled for any tests, but if anyone has any evidence at hand supporting my assumption or not, please do post it.

That's awwesome. I know what I'm buying: A dual 2 GHz and a 20 inch display.

With my Edu discount or Student Developer Discount I will be getting exactly that; 2GHz Power Mac with 20" screen!!! But I have to wait until the end of June so I can save up enough money!

My Apple 23" display has been working perfectly (had since about 1 month after initial release IIRC) and looks darn good (even lighting, etc.). It looks a lot better, cleaner, and smaller packaging then the 20" HP LCD that it replaced (cannot recall model now).

I have it attached to my HP laptop doc. The screen is better then the two prior generation 23" Apple displays I have attached to my PowerMac G5.

whoo nice price drop on the 20" I must say. The $1200+ canadian it was b4 was a bit much to swallow. But $999 is a bit closer to a realistic purchase in the future...assuming I get this job I'm interviewing for today :D

This news got me excited again as I am thinking about getting one, 20" probably. But this Dell you guys mention sounds good too!!...I may take a look!!

But these displays just look fantastic!!! Flush and simple. Many displays have USB and firewire hub in them?!

Is it possible for the 20" to become HD??...or is the pixel rate or ratio all wrong or sumit??!! You cleverer people out there are gonna call me stupid over that question and prove me all wrong!!

Nooooo! I just bought a 20"- cinema display three weeks ago!

Hee-hee - me too! Well, six weeks ago, and I did manage to get it for £600 instead of £699, so the new £550 price point doesn't sting too much...

Stings a bit, though... half way to an iSight...

The 20" is already HD. If you want to do 720p. Even more..the 17" iMacs are HD.

There's no way you can make a 20" Cinema Display become HD - it's lacking about 50px on the horizontal, so you'd just lose them. Having said that, don't let it put you off getting one - the picture quality is just amazing. I'm just a little miffed I bought mine 6 weeks ago, way before this price drop!

Nice price cuts, I wish they dropped the price some on the 30", because im thinking about buying that one for myself and giving my dad my 23". but i might just buy him another 23".

The 720p video resolution is 1280 X 720 pixels, which gives 921,600 total pixels and the 1080i video resolution is 1920 X 1080, which gives a whopping 2,073,000 pixels.

I bought the 20 inch when it was $1299 and I feel ripped the hell off.

I also bought it at $1299. I've been enjoying it for a long time now (8 months?) and I'm glad that I didn't wait all this time to buy. You never know what updates or price cuts are coming, and you have to buy at some point. Were you happy with your display when you got it? Well, it's not like this price cut did anything to either what you have or what you paid...

It has been hell (Dell) deciding between four options.

1) 30" Apple LCD (probably refurbed)
2) 23" Apple LCD (new)
3) 24" Dell

Or... crazy...

4) 2 x 24" Dell

I couldn't do the 30", because when I measure the spot in my desk, it would just not fit so at that point it was between the Dell and Apple.

While the features, size and price are all winners on the Dell, I just don't trust them.

The Apple price drop, combined with my corp discount made the 23" down around $1300 which was worth it for me for Apple look and feel, Firewire ports, one cord and Apple Quality. Since I bought it with a G5 and Apple Care it is covered for the 3 years (plus more with an Amex Card).

I will probably wait a year or two and throw on a second 23" used or refurbed.

Oh my God I am INSANELY excited because the 20" display is only 699 with the education discount. Now my master plan for August.

PowerBook G4 w/ RAM Upgrade (12" 1.5, 768) = $1,467
Apple Cinema Display 20" = $699

Total = $2166

Minus $1500 (parental grant for new computer in August)
Minus $350 (approx value of my iMac around August)

= $316 What I end up paying.

Oh my God I can afford this.
And if you wait till september i think you will be able to pick up the next generation PowerBook!
Odds are they will be introduced at WWDC in june or in september :)
I am thinking in the same direction, allthough i would like a 15"PB.
If they introduce new gen PB during this summer it will be a PB plus 20" Display, otherwise ill keep my iBook and by a PM 20" display.

Thems the ways it be, brother. Imagine when the 23" HD first came out at $3499 and then in a single day came down to $1999. What about those people who bought at the high price.

The only way Apple is able to sell the 20" now for $799 is because it has made enough money to justify the reduction. Competition plays a part. Lack of sales (perhaps) plays a part.

People on the fence about a whole new system will most likely jump on down from there now with new specs on the G5 and these price reductions.

Even the monster 30" will eventually come down to a more reasonable level -- those that bought at $3299 will just have to deal with it. They were not "ripped the hell off". No one put a gun to their head. They bought a product that they felt was a fair price at the time. And it was. It is one of the best displays on the market (if not the best).

Feel good about being a first adopter and knowing you've enjoyed your monitor longer than most people getting 20" displays now.

As my mother used to say:

"Get glad in the same pants you got mad in"

Where are some links to the forums? I just checked the first page of the forms and saw nothing indicating such a response. I've owned the 22", the old 23" and now the new 23" and it is by far the best monitor I've had. There is nothing wrong with it in any way. Just a few links would ease my mind about what you're saying.

i dont know why everyone is complaining about the 20" "not being HD". 720p, which is higher percieved quality than 1080i (and 1080p isnt fully supported yet) can be edited on even the 20", actually even the old 17" 4:3. heck, my powerbook g4 15" at 1280x854 can view 720p HD video with pixels to spare if it wanted to (but i dont have any HD content). 1080p is another story, but chances are that if you're needing to edit 1080i or 1080p content and 720p isnt enough for you, and in that situation, you can probably afford a $5000 HD camera to shoot 1080 content with, and a $3000 powermac g5, then you can probably afford a $1500 23" or two or get a dell. stop complaining. the 20" is a great monitor, and apple isnt going to change the DPI, when 1080i on a 20" monitor wouldn't look that great anyways. sorry, had to rant.

but this is great news about the price drops. the 20" is becoming more and more of a reality for me to afford. and i'd be more than happy with 1680x1050 pixels.

Must. Not. Buy.

*throws wallet into river*

How much was it before the price drop EDU? $1499? Just curious if the price dropped by $100 or $200.

Must.Buy.Now. Aww................

Here in the UK the price of Apples 20" display is now the same price as Dells 20" widescreen.......now there's no reason for anyone in the UK to buy a Dell :D :D
