i dont know why everyone is complaining about the 20" "not being HD". 720p, which is higher percieved quality than 1080i (and 1080p isnt fully supported yet) can be edited on even the 20", actually even the old 17" 4:3. heck, my powerbook g4 15" at 1280x854 can view 720p HD video with pixels to spare if it wanted to (but i dont have any HD content). 1080p is another story, but chances are that if you're needing to edit 1080i or 1080p content and 720p isnt enough for you, and in that situation, you can probably afford a $5000 HD camera to shoot 1080 content with, and a $3000 powermac g5, then you can probably afford a $1500 23" or two or get a dell. stop complaining. the 20" is a great monitor, and apple isnt going to change the DPI, when 1080i on a 20" monitor wouldn't look that great anyways. sorry, had to rant.

but this is great news about the price drops. the 20" is becoming more and more of a reality for me to afford. and i'd be more than happy with 1680x1050 pixels.

Err sorry, I wasn't complaining about the 20" not being HD!! I was just simply asking if people thought it would ever happen and explain to me the technicals behind it!! Which people have! (Thumbs up guys!! :D ) Im actually wanting a screen so no convincing needs to be done on me!! I won't use HD anyway and dont mind that it isnt, just a curious question!
Im still torn between the Apple 20" and the Dell one, mmm, want Apple, but the Dell seems more logical!! Do I follow my heart or my head?!! Also, do people think the 23" would be worth the extra dosh for the extra vrooom?!!
(Linking to future 12" PB here for home office (ie: bedroom!) desk use!!)
But ye, great news on the price drops!!..the previous price drops first got me thinking about buying one, and with another one things are looking good tho!! Want a TV tho aswell, cant have TV and screen (space and money!!) hence why the dell lcd tvs are looking good and cheap!....Gutted!! if only I cud find a scart to DVI adapter to plug my digital set top box into the display!!!! :p
Ta!!

The price of the 30" ACD has not moved at all since it's introduction.
Not true. It originally was $3299 and has dropped $300 since then.

Something sticking in my craw is an item everyone has conveniently overlooked as they continue to piss and moan about price/value of the new G5 PowerMacs that came out today. The top of the line now comes with the video card needed to support one 30" display, essentially putting $599 back into your wallet (unless you need two 30" displays.)

Ye I noticed that too!! Ye I know the main specs cudve been updated more, but its these little things that do help and help make Apple the Apple we love. I truely hope tho that they do release something bigger and cheaper soon, I'm getting worried to say the least!

I'm just glad prices are going down. :)
(Apple, please make that happen more often)

btw. I have also read poor Apple 23 inch reviews, but maybe the newer models are better.

Since you didn't take the time to fully quote him, I will:

But the 20" looks to be the best deal.

Got mine 3 weeks ago too, but paid the full £699. How'd you get it for £600.

I'm a bit gutted.

Hee-hee - me too! Well, six weeks ago, and I did manage to get it for £600 instead of £699, so the new £550 price point doesn't sting too much...

Stings a bit, though... half way to an iSight...

Nice to see prices going down - now people can actually start affording these things! I won't be needing a new monitor until next year though, so hopefully by then the 30" is about $1000... ;)

still can't afford it

my liquid video LCD monitor is over a year old, and is already breaking. It randomly tints windows blue and goes back to normal after about 5 seconds. I can't afford a new monitor though, let alone a cinema display :( . I envy those of you who can and or have already purchased Apple's lovely monitor.

Is Dell 24" HD capable?

Maybe I'm not seeing it, but I don't see any note in Dell tech specs that 24" LCD is HD capable.

Wouldn't that make the price difference reasonable?

I need to know because I want to use Eye TV HD recorder.

Anybody out there that can educate me on the issue?

Thanks.

Are you sure your video cables are well connected, pins aren't dirty, etc.?
It could also be the video adapter.

I often find folks thinking the LCD is bad when instead it is something wrong with the cable or connection.

funked up monitor?

Thanks for the tip, I tried fiddling with the cables, but there is a possibility its not the monitor and could be caused by that since I only tried for about a second...haha :) . Either way, it rarely happens, and im just gonna suck it up for 3 years until i get my PB for college :) .. Hopefully it doesn't die by then if my LCD is funked up...

20" Dell widescreen is about $380 now with coupons.

Can you add coupons to the already discounted price of $486? I've tried a couple already and nothing has taken.

If I can get that display for $380 I'm getting one ASAP.

This article is a great breakdown on the tech inside each display and how each performs in real world tests. With the price drop on the Dell, I think I'm going to snatch one up.

Honestly I would stay the hell away from the 2005FPW. I went through three replacements. It breaks down as such.

Display one: Flawless display. No bad pix. The backlight was horrid. Bottom right of the screen the bleed was as big as my fist. (I have an average size fist.) Along with a bleed in the upper right and in the dead center. Playing a dark movie with the lights out it looks like the Milkyway on the screen. But when its a normal display displaying your typical desktop its the most beautiful display I've ever seen.

Display Two: Worse backlight then the first. 6 dead pix on screen.

Display Three: Nearly flawless backlight. 12 dead pix in the center of the screen. At that point I said screw it and shipped everything back to Dell and I’m still waiting on the refund from the final screen.

The 2005FPW is an OK display unless you are picky like I am. All I know is going from a 20.1" flat panel back to my 17" CRT is painful to say the least. I miss my baby. But frankly whatever my next display is going to be its got to last me until OLED's become mainstream which means at least another 2-3 years minimum.

PS- Portrait rocks. Let me find me previous pic…
Portrait.jpg

The picture doesn’t do it justice. Someone was complaining about possible stress on the eyes. Check the brightness and contrast settings. Dell's 2005 has almost twice the contrast ratio of Apple's and the 2405 is bright enough to burn out your retinas at 1000:1 ratio. OK so maybe not burn out but definitely you need your sunglasses if you don’t do some tweaking to the monitor settings.

yes sadly the dell screens are still better value for money, but at least apple have lowered the price a bit, it will stop scaring away buyers.

I'm just going to end up getting a Dell and putting an Apple sticker on it...I thought maybe the price drops would be competitive this time. Alas...

Fine... but his second sentence completely contradicts his first. He said that the price hadn't moved since the introduction of the product. WRONG. Why he bothered posting is a mystery to me. At least my post was informative, Frog3000.

Besides, he didn't bold that second sentence. You did. If he had, I might've just skipped it, but I had already hit the Reply button before even reading 2nd sentence. I continued to reply anyway for the benefit of the skimmers who problem would've missed his 2nd sentence, too.

Price drops are always a good thing. The 30" certainly looks very appealing.

After reading the prior post, I just had to go back to apple.com. Because I thought that I had misread the information. The higher priced card is still required.

I typed a whole response to this about how replying for the benefit of skimmers is foolish and seems like a cover for jumping the gun, yet I deleted it all, as there really is no purpose in continuing this discussion in this thread.

If you have anything else to say please PM me.

As for the displays themselves, I've ordered a 20" display for my dad as an early Father's Day present. After seeing how it is I'll probably end up with one myself. :)

Dell is spanking everyone in LCD monitors right now, Apple included. A 24" jaw dropper for less than 900 bucks?

I think the pm upgrades were so mild it still makes sense to buy a used one.

back when i bought my Cinema Display, it cost 4,000 smackeroos. you kids don't know how good you have it with your low cost, high def, aluminum enclosed gadgetry! now GET OFF MY LAWN!!
[/crogety old man voice]

thank god i had my employee discount (-$1k right there) and the dot.com i was heading to work for picked up the rest. i may actually cry when that monitor dies. i shudder at the thought of shelling out that kind of money from my own pocket b/c i KNOW i'll want the 30" by then...

I like how the iBooks come with 512 of ram. I know this is a forum for displays but whatever. It's about time they put everything to 512. next maybe the Mac Mini...

The iBooks come with 512Mb RAM?? Where'd you find this??!! Do tell!!!!! :p  ;)

I do think Apple are relying too much on their superb 30" model. Anyone else no of anyone else who sells one??...Even Dell beaten on this one?? (***stands back and waits for the onslaught of pro Dell posters with more information than he!!!***) By making something so spectacular the price tag is somewhat justified, (although lowering it is an eternal consumer hope!!) although the others are still a bit out. Getting closer mind you, but as a lot of you have pointed out the Dells are doing pretty darn good themselves and not doing Apple any favours!
