If I put a Dell flat panel on my G4, will it support portrait mode?

Nope. But I hear Tiger supports swivel screens, so maybe it will circa this Friday :)

Damn, $699 (EDU) for a 20"... I would actually pay that to get one... Sell my Dell 19" and buy that 20"... But the 19" is only two months old...

I think I'll go put on the straitjacket now...

These threads are so painfully predictable.

"I have no life and did the math and Dells are cheaper"

"Yeah, but Dells suck and you get what you pay for. Maybe you can't tell the difference."

Once and for all people: YOU'RE BOTH RIGHT.

Some people pay for the very best, including components on the inside. Some buy the cheapest thing which serves 90% of the utility. You're both right, you're just different types of shoppers.

gee, i wonder if this means pricecuts on the forthcoming iMac G5 updates
even $100 off would be welcome.

would make sense. Kill the eMac, keep the Mini, iMacs at $1199, $1399, and $1799

time will tell...

What about this deal?

I love Apple products, but why would I buy a 30 inch monitor for $2999 when I can buy a Dell 42" HDTV built-in Plasma TV? Not only can I use it for a computer, but also have the luxury of watching tv on it too.

Apple should have added tv tuners to all displays

Ebay baby...

Better hurry to get in on this steal at ebay...
(and it's used)

Thanks,
Florio

Apple gives 10 days (I think) of price protection. So you just call Apple and they'll credit you the difference.

Sure, buy the plasma and have 1024x768 resolution stretched out over 42".

Dell UltraSharp Alternatives To Apple Monitors

If you must have the fixed aluminum frame without an elevator and pivot capability, the price may be worth the extra $300 over the Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW 24" WideScreen (1920 x 1200) that was $1,019.15 this past week. It's a plastic frame, but it has an elevator and the whole screen can pivot (supported in Tiger) 90°. So yes the price drop is a good thing. But I think that Dell's Monitors are still a better choice even now. List is only $1,199 and Dell puts it on the 15% discount block regularly.

I also chose a Dell UltraSharp 2001FP 20.1-inch 1600x1200 monitor that has the same stand features for only $561.75 after a 25% discount off $749 list. I won't miss the other 80 pixels wide that Apple's 20" wide has (1680) as much as I will be glad I have a full 1200 pixels of height instead of only 1050. Now that the OS finally - after far too many years - supports portrait mode, I am really glad I bought both these Dells. :p

Woohoo

I love my 20" ACD so much that I'm really glad I paid Apple an additional £150 for 2 months' use. A bargain for such crisy colourness.

Apple kit is in danger of becoming cheap and nasty. I want sky high prices back again. Stevie and the others deserve more of my hard earned cash. Please stop lowering prices Apple and devaluing the brand! Your products are worth more I tell you, MORE!

:p

Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW 24" Wide (1920x1200) Monitor Is Best

Wouldn't that make the price difference reasonable?

I need to know because I want to use Eye TV HD recorder.

Anybody out there that can educate me on the issue?

Thanks.

Any screen that can do high enough res can do HD right? so you need at least Xx1080 to do 1080I/p

I'm pretty sure the 24" does that
Yes it does. Moreover, in addition to analog VGA and DVI computer inputs, it has component, composite and s-video inputs. For TRUE HD on a flat panel you need MINIMUM 1920 wide. The 1080i high is less than the 1200 high that the Dell is. The Dell is the best kept secret in the video editing - TV watching world. I just bought the Dell specifically after studying the EyeTV 500 HD specs and requirements.

And it PIVOTS which is now supported in Tiger's Displays Preference Panel. Imagine, 1920 HIGH by 1200 WIDE for poster design work.

LCD displays are impacted by three different major performance factors: the panel, the driver circuitry, and, the backlight. While the widescreen Dells and the Apple displays use the same panels, each company uses its own unique driver circuitry, and their own CCFL backlights. And frankly Apple's utterly smokes the junk driver system in the Dell displays.

I bought one of the 20-inch Dells and have compared it side by side with both 20 and 23 inch Apple units. There are a variety of subtle but quite noticeable differences between the two. The colors are more washed out on the Dell. The contrast and black depth are visably inferior. Max brightness is lower on the Dell. All of these differences are, admittedly, very subtle on brand new units. However, the price differences between the Apple and Dell displays aren't from Dell's charity or Apple's stupidity. The prices reflect extreme cost cutting decisions that Dell made in the design of their product.

In economics, there is an age old principle that goes, "There Is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch." Anybody silly enough to think that they are getting a "deal" on one of these Dell displays is just being irresponsible with their cash, similarly to people who think they are getting a "bargain" when buying a $39 DVD player at Wal-Mart. Brand new performance is okay. But, you look back 2 or 3 years later and wonder how you could have been so stupid to have tried to save those few dollars... as you recall the day your "bargain" spit its guts out and died... or, as you suffer with horribly degraded performance.

In electronics products, there is a reason why premium brands charge premium prices, and junk brands charge junk prices. I would have thought anyone experienced enough to be participating on this forum would have long since learned that lesson.

When I invest in an LCD display (and, personally and through my company, I own about 20 of them), I expect to enjoy top notch performance from that product for several years into the future. My Apple displays have reliably delivered on that expectation.

Spend your money any way you wish. But, for the love of Pete... please realize the trash you are buying when you spend it on a junk price product from a discount brand like Dell.

20" being as cheap as this price, less and less ppls are expecting a cheaper 17 inch widescreen, right?
so will apple still plan to produce 17"? i doubt.

anyway i like ADC. i still think that it is the worse designed monitor ever in Apple's history.

This is just great !

Wow this is totally amazing, I have been thinking of getting four 30" Cinema Displays for me and my girlfriends studio, (to complement my powermac G5 (dual 2.3)) so I have just placed my order on the apple site
God I'm so happy, but how do you hang them all on the wall ? Don't the stands get in the way or do they fold up behind ? I guess I'm going to scrap that 20" Apple display now, maybe ebay if anyone fancies it...
See ya, I'll keep you updated when I get them !

John

Congrats on your very first post here on this website, Johnny! Way to stir the pot! Be sure and take some neato photos of all 4 of your displays hung on your studio walls for all of us to see, drool over and be envious of...

But we won't hold our breath.

But what about the 24" Dell?...

If your goign to be buying a 3000$ powermac, the machine is half of the experience, The displauy is the other half, if u have huge power, then its useless with a crappy dispay, yes there expensive but ur spending huge money on the machine, and yes power is important but its useleess without a display.

This post is being typed as i milk wifi from some place in southstreeet seaport nyc.

Ill be purchasing a 2.3ghz and 23" about 4 gran within the year, the full deal, just got my working papers i start on monday!

Anandtech answers your questions

Did nobody actually read the Anandtech article? Allow me to quote for those too lazy to read the entire article.

"As you can see, even though both images are conveyed over the DVI cable, there seems to be some discrepancy on the actual tones. The more muted colors of the Cinema display were slightly off according to OptiCal, and we needed to correct the curves via software."

There you have it. These sites exist for a reason, to provide objective and subjective analysis of hardware so that we need not rely upon entirely baseless speculation.

Suspension of Disbelief
An elegant aluminum enclosure, advanced hinge technology and peripheral support give you flexibility to place your display anywhere and adjust it effortlessly. The optional VESA mount lets you put a flat panel in surprising new places. So you can make your Apple display a seamless part of a museum kiosk, mount it on a wall in a office lobby or swivel changes to a client via an articulating arm.

Apple has a picture of the Vesa monunt on the link below.

The 30" ACDs are just beautiful! I saw it at my local reseller. One customer had the audacity to say "It's too big". I was about to slug him for that comment. My next LCD will definitely be a 30" or larger. Especially the next round of price cuts will drop the price of the 30" down to $2599.
