Fan is short for fanatic. You know, a crazy person. I think the gold iPod nano didn't sell very well and maybe Apple is a little gun shy. I had my doubts, but the gold iP5S looks very, very nice. I like it a lot and I hate gold.

i went to the Verizon store and asked if they had the 5S gold in a 128GB model. they said they were sold out

they're sold out of models that don't even exist

OH THE HUMANITY

if they announce on monday that they sold 6-8million units, will you still complain?
What number is acceptable for you guys?

Absolutely yes, Acceptable is 8%-10% of the customer base.

Based on subscriber numbers, ATT has about 107 Million, Verizon has 116 Million, Sprint has about 64 Million and T-Mobile has about 44 million customers (US Number only). Let's add that up ...331 Million customers. If they only sold 8 Million phones, that is only enough phones for 2.4% of the US Market. Really. I would take to guess that at least 10% of the US market would want the new iPhone. Let's add in the rest of the world and watch that % shrink even lower. So, this is all a Marketing ploy and a lot less about how many they can sell or want to sell.

I just hope their sales figures don't include the people waiting 7-10 business days to get their phones. But we will never know.

Long lines , longest lines ever.. Is not an indicator of short supply.. But high demand.. ...
Are u a samsung paid troll?
You must be kidding. I have an iPad and AppleTV and now ordered an iPhone 5s. There´s no reason at all to be in anyone´s "camp". Also, this is just what I think out of business experience, it doesn´t necessarily need to be your opinion.

So, you believe everything that Apple says? Then you don´t have any idea what marketing is there for. To make even the worst things look good. Or to show you the most optimal conditions in every case. So even if it would be true that Apple has low supply, they would not come out and say "Yes, we have problems with supply, sorry guys", so they say "incredible demand".

iPhone 5 user: "Hey Phil, my black iPhone 5 has bad quality, it already looks dated out of the box, production issues?"

Phil answers (original quote):

"Alex

Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal.

Phil"

But believe what you like, it´s a free world.

US population is only 314 million, and that includes babies. Looking at the sources behind those numbers that includes not only retail phones, but also wholesale business, cellular enabled tablets, laptops, hotspots and even 3G kindles. My sister-in-law counts as four subscribers based on that, and she's certainly not in the market to buy any more than one iPhone. Come back with a number that is just phones, okay?

How honest are you? You made up your own question for Phil's answer. The actual question is here:

Apples to Oranges. Previous models had pre-orders. This year was different. In previous years most if not all available phones were sold out on the first day. This year, it's mostly the gold model which, apparently, was supplied in scarce quantities.

There will always be a shortage at the beginning... They would have to buy enough manufacturing capability at the beginning for the massive demand then have it sit there the rest of the time.

They do this every release to save money.

I casually strolled into my local Verizon around lunch time and purchased a space grey 5s, like I wanted. They had a few left out of about 250 (of various storage sizes).

They were sold out of silver (not sure how many they got in) and never received any gold.

They said there were about 50 people in line when they opened at 8am.

Not having enough stock makes "incredible demand" headlines, drumming up excitement for more sales.

It also means lost sales, and that I'm sure is a bigger worry for them than not having enough "Apple released a new iPhone and they've run out" headlines - you do realise that if people think they're out, they will buy something else, right?

The conspiracies in this regard ignore completely how companies actually operate.

Predicting day 1 demand is not quite the easy task you'd think, with all the countries, all the retail outlets, all the telcos, all the colours, all the storage options, no one retail outlet wants to stock too much or not enough, Apple has to start producing these products months in advance and then they have to put them in a warehouse and let them sit, spending 10s or 100s of millions of dollars, only to be perhaps wrong (like Microsoft recently) so it's a balancing act where they decide not to overestimate demand while trying not to underestimate demand at the same time, spend money to try and meet demand without having stock sit idle for too long, which is a very bad investment too (one Wall Street slaps you on the wrist regarding). There is no conspiracy here, they don't purposely sell more than they have, because every additional one they could have sold is a lost sale, and that's worse than any potential "missed PR opportunity claiming unmet demand day 1".

This is the same thing critics said last year, with the iPhone 5. Only to find out that Apple sold five million units, the most iPhones ever sold in a single day.

Let's see the numbers this year.

I'm sure they will sell at least last year's numbers and probably a bit more. This is to be expected due to delayed purchases in anticipation of a new model.

Apple just knows how to "Play The Game"

Apple is just an excellent company at marketing, simple as that. They release an "S" version with nice hardware upgrades, but instead of leaving you your regular two colors, they add a new color in the mix, attracting more attention to the phone. IMO, Apple just knows what to do. The make a solid phone and continue to improve upon it, drawing in people with ease of use across all iOS devices and the reputation of a great OS.

I think there are different areas where Apple can improve, but who am I? Im not w worldwide billion dollar company who continues to sell phones and make huge headway in the market. That being said, I think most of us have very little clue on how to run a huge company and continue to make it so successful.

My two cents...:D

Every time I read about 50 people in line at 8 am or even 1300 at the NY flagship store I weep a little inside ;)

I've been to my closest Apple Store (Oberhausen, Germany), arrived there at 5:30 AM and did not get a phone. The press reported 2.6k people waited in line at that store.
And online stores showed 7-10 day since early morning and october since afternoon for all models of the 5S.

So my subjective feeling is that there is an incredible demand :D

I ordered my 32GB Silver 5s online this morning when AT&T.com estimated shipping to be 7-10 business days. I got an email about an hour ago saying that my order had been shipped and a FedEx tracking number saying it should arrive Monday. im wondering if that's the phone itself or just the SIM card. On the fedex site it says the package's weight is 2lbs so fingers crossed.

OH THE HUMANITY

AT&T didn't have the iPhone 7s in 512GB, I was furious!

WTF... I ordered mine yesterday at 3 am, when it was 1-3 days and still no updates...!

Interesting that Gold is so popular. I cannot imaging Steve Jobs allowing Apple to make and sell a Gold iPhone. But maybe I'm wrong. Is their a Gucci® Logo on it too?

I will fess up to complaining on these boards after downloading iOS7 but will admit that now after a few days of using it, it's not too bad and I am getting used to it. Still don't "love" all the white but there are some pretty cool new features.

I ordered a 5s last night for my mom to replace her 4s so she's happy and I was able to see/touch a 5c today at the mall and I am now thinking about selling my 5 and getting a "c" as it's pretty awesome and I like blue:) It reminds of the 3g iPhone with its curved edges and there's just something very cool about the 5c!
