This sentence is a little ridiculous,

... although it is encouraged by reports of at least some customers receiving machines free of the issue.

Some customers have always been receiving machines free of issue. In fact the overwhelming majority of the new iMacs shipped have been free of the issue.

Yes it is an issue, and yes it probably effects a lot of customers. A rate of 0.1% is a lot of customers. This article finds a way to label the 99% "some."

you do realize what you just wrote is steaming with hypocrisy, right?

These two sentences are ridiculous. For 1% (0.1% would mean the remaining would be 99.9%), Apple releases firmware updates and admits to the problem? Please....

thank you everyone who bought a 27 imac and have issues, you all have been so kind to participate in the beta testing program.

all future owner of 27 imac thank you.

I will think over the weekend to buy 27 imac or not.

Well given Apples track record with fixes I would wait until you see news from the users that the problem has really been fixed.

There are lies, damn lies, and official Apple press statements.

The "fix" is BS. I just don't buy it from what I've seen and heard so far.

And I don't buy it either. Apple must be relying on Steve's RDF to get them through this debacle.

I just returned my fourth 27" i5 to the local Apple store due to yellowing and dark banding near the bottom of the display. Useless for photo editing. The previous machines also had between them yellowing, poor color consistency, a noisy hard drive, a noisy PSU and a mouse that lost Bluetooth connection multiple times per day. One of them also scratched the heck out of every CD and DVD given to it.

Anyway, when I carried in this (week 05) machine, the store staff offered to swap for yet another one and I agreed on the condition that they let me check it out in store. We set it up and the yellow / cloudy white tint was still there in the lower right, with a very noticeable yellow blotch slightly to the left of screen center. It also had the horizontal grey band above the dock, even worse than the machine I'd just returned. It was a week 07.

Apple says they have addressed the problems? Since when? How are we supposed to know what's safe to buy? And what about existing units? Maybe they have fixed the issues on the very latest iMacs leaving the factory today, but buying a machine from store stock is still a crap shoot. And based on my experience, the odds of finding a truly good one are not good.

Those two patches they mentioned did absolutely nothing to help the tint problems. They only dealt with screen flicker.

My past post had indicated that Apple has switched Part number for the 27" LCD display, meaning they have replaced the LCD display with a newer revision. At least as service provider, we will not see the old LCDs being re-circulated as repair parts and cause problems at later dates

Whew, at the very least Apple Finally admits the problems are gone and is willing to take care of the first batch of adopters.

Still, I am still not too happy with the i7 17" iMac because it is extremely hot compare to the i5 model.

Apple's PR department have spent months on those sorry two sentences as a response to this debacle. Having "addressed" the issue can mean nothing more than having listened to complaints. They certainly haven't fixed it.

I know this because I just received my 27" iMac. It's an i5, manufactured in week 6.

It still has a slight yellowing in the centre of the screen. I say slight, as it is only obvious when you look at the screen using the grey bar test that you're all no doubt familiar with by now. Nevertheless, it's there. And if it gets worse, the Mac's going back. These are top-of-the-range machines, and Apple has a damn cheek putting them out with anything less than 100% performance. After all, I doubt they would be willing to compromise on retail price.

They're good machines, but a bit of integrity as part of the deal would give me a hell of a lot more confidence in the brand. If there is a problem, just tell people you are dealing with it. Don't stick your head in the sand and then admit it months later. That just makes you look like a coward. And a dishonest one at that.

So I rounded off a decimal place, sue me. The point still stands. This iMac is selling like hotcakes. Look at Amazon's best sellers list.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/pc/565098/ref=pd_ts_pc_nav

The new iMac owns it. Go sit in an Apple store for a day. You'll see 27" iMacs selling like crazy. This article makes it sound like you are extremely lucky if you purchase a 27" iMac without issue, when the overwhelming majority have purchased a new 27" iMac and haven't had a single complaint.

Anyone care to guess as to when the i5 and i7 27 inch Imacs will be available for sale as refurbished on Apple's website?

I've been checking almost every day expecting an avalanche of refurbs, but have only seen a handful since these 27" launched. They go very quickly so you and I are not the only ones thinking in that direction.

But still, given how much I've seen posted about this, it seems like there would be a TON of them hitting the refurb store.

And interestingly, just about every one that does appear there seems to be the stock unit. Is nobody upsizing the hard drive, ram or graphics card? Since those upgrades are relatively cheap (for Apple), I would expect lots of 2Tb refurbs with the highest end graphics card (update). But I haven't seen ONE of those yet.

I've been lucky not to have any problems with my i7 27" iMac - and I received it November 13th.

I've looked for the yellowing since I first heard of it being a problem and luckily it is not present. It runs cool and quiet too.

Yet the screen is not perfect. No display is ever perfect, especially one that size, even if it has LED backlighting. While Apple's quality control is not perfect, it is better than most. I've had very bad experiences with Dell and especially HP.

While the display problem is real, if one is looking for perfection, find another hobby because no computer, piece of software, or display is ever going to be perfect. Once one comes to terms with that fact it becomes easier to live with some minor imperfections.

My 27" i7 runs hot as hell, especially under bootcamp. In fact, it appears the fan management doesn't work under bootcamp/XP, and if I play games it will overheat and crash/reboot within an hour.

I'm glad Apple takes this seriously though!

I hope you're being sarcastic.

Because Apple didn't even acknowledge screen issues until a massive complaint from many many many (can i emphasize many any more?) very unhappy paying customers. Up until today this issue from Apple was a a "public myth", keeping all of us in the dark and the rest quiet with discounts...

I held back for months from buying this beautiful beast and may hold now until apple quietly update the imac some time in june...

I have a mac, but win7 is actually a great OS. I was pleasantly surprised from MS. Probably their best OS since win2k, which is good because I needed to upgrade to keep my .net development going.

Dell monitors are actually pretty nice depending on which model you get.

And yes, Apples QA has gone completely in the crapper. So far on my SR MBP I've had the mobo replaced b/c of the Nvidia issue, battery replaced because of bulging and it still randomly drops keystrokes. Oh, and the keystroke issue was 'addressed' by Apple and claimed to be fixed over a year ago. Now they just delete threads from people who still have the problem that I'm guessing they can't fix.

I don't want my next machine to be a Mac, but since I'm also an iPhone developer I'm stuck for now. Sigh.

Well, I agree QA at apple stinks... matches a certain car company right now. Funny thing is, I read somewhere that there is a Dell monitor using the same panel as the iMac, so problem may occur there too.... I have a i7 27", but my core duo 20" I also have still drops airport completely when it goes into sleep mode requiring a reboot. This 4 years after its release and never fixed.... I've had lots of bluetooth problems, and none of my macs work with any of my cameras since snow leopard... so much for QA. If it weren't for their constant layoffs, I'd like to shape up their QA for them!

iMac matte display for my 24 inch is perfect and sexy as hell. Up until that point, most if not all products was top notch quality. Too bad they stop selling matte side plays though.

I've been looking to upgrade to the 27 Inch for a while, but Apple went from perfect to "lets keep everyone in the dark, and make the one's that complain look like fools and witch hunters" was really a kick to my nuts wake up call for me in the direction Apple has been going lately.

Apple's been pushing out products like if they're a cheap chinese rip off... wait, Macs are mostly made in China... hmmmm :D

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I purchased my i7 iMac and have had no problems. It's hard to understand how this can happen to some but not all of the Macs since they are made in the same plant.

This is a good news story for Apple. I shoot Canon cameras when doing photography. A couple of years ago Canon released a pro camera that had a horrible problem with focusing that affected a small minority of the population. However, this trouble made it into the news and made consumer level camera purchasers move to Nikon.
Didn't they also have problems with the 5D mkII when first released? Black spots next to bright lights in night shots? That hurt Canon's reputation, too. (That and the fact Nikon is making such good sensors and bodies these days.)

Also, the 27" problem of course underscores why it would be a gamble to rush out and buy an iPad before consumer feedback starts rolling in and production kinks are ironed out.

Good for you, now go play with windows 7 half ass made operating system.

and an dell tn monitor, I know you will be so much happier.

Last imac I had was the 17" round imac and it lasted until i gave it away with still no hardware or software problems. Not a gaming machine but for everything else it did the job apple quality has always had. :D

Wow, let's look at an OS erasing your entire hard drive. Which one did that now? Hmm? Well by golly.... it was SL that did it, an Apple product.

Do you actually think before you type?

Do you even bother to check your glass house before you throw stones???

Which computer OS erases the person's entire data because of a bug??? By golly, it was SL, an Apple product!

*major face palm*

I just received a new core i7 27 inch iMac without a single defect. No flicker,, no color issues... its flawless... I have Apple care otherwise.

The statement Gizmodo is making a big deal about says NOTHING we didn't know. Read it again...

"We've addressed the issues that caused display flickering and yellow tint. Customers concerned that their iMac is affected should contact AppleCare."

This should be read as:

We've addressed (A) the issues that CAUSED display flickering and (B) yellow tint.

The word "caused" relates to display flickering, not yellow tint. They have addressed the yellow tint issue only by exchanging the screens, not necessarily finding the cause.

Well done to Apple's pr department for a professionally-constructed statement that covers every angle. It's an old double-edged statement construction trick that pr, political and legal professionals use all the time. Only mugs fall for it, but it was sent to Gizmodo, so it's served the desired purpose of shutting them up.

I got one of the earlier i7s, a week 43 model. Luckily there weren't any issues and it has been a stellar performer so far.

Good post!

I'm still having financial issues so my 27 will have to wait a while longer. Hopefully by then they'll feature USB 3.0 and a GPU from this century. Just joking there, but a 4670 with 256MB of RAM looks really lame. 512MB is the bare minimum in the PC world with most mainstream (non-gaming) cards coming with 1GB now. Radeon 5xxx chips not only perform much better they do it with less power and heat, something rather important in a thin case like the iMac.
