Most bargain basement PCs barely have a version of Windows installed. The Mac software bundle seems ok to me, though the computers are indeed somewhat expensive.

Well, I think for lower priced Dells/Gateways you find lots of nice commercial software bundles. On my mac though, I've had a lot of success using shareware/open source software instead of paying a lot for commercial products.

Format>text>table

FYI, there is a help app for Textedit. Typed "table" in the search box and there it was.

Nope, no such entry under Format->Text (Align Left, Center, Justify, Align Right, --, Writing Direction>, Show Ruler, Copy Ruler, Paste Ruler); nothing in Help (urgh!) either (finds two matches, one about importing documents, the other about document formats (not formatting documents, document formats, eg. txt vs rtf vs doc)

The new Intel versions not only are dual core (obviously), but Intel now has PCI Express and this comes with the new Intel versions. Maybe it's just me, but PCI Express is awesome. Especially if you do video editing. Unless someone just absolutely wants a PPC or they get a screaming deal on one, wait and get the Intel version.
The last iMac G5 also has PCI Express graphics.

I need to run a program on Classic (which won't run on Intel) so ended up getting a 2.1GHz iMac G5. For $1350 shipped AR at Amazon, not a bad deal for the 20".

Wow!

Holy Cow...I was passing by the local univ. computer store during lunch today to see how the 20inch G5 are selling. It turns out that I can use my student discount too and its even CHEAPER than Apple. Its priced at 1299!!!! versus 1399 at apple. Unfortunately, they dont have a finance plan. Does anyone know if apple does price match? b/c for 1299 I am definitely buying an iMac G5!!! :)

You need to be on Tiger to get tables.

not all bad

I am glad to see the anandtech.com article accurately compare the current G5 iMacs to the Core Duo iMacs. So many of the benchmarks that I have seen previously were comparing the new Intel iMacs to the G5 iMacs from last spring rather than the G5 iMacs that were introduced in the fall. There were several improvements made between those models and it just simply is unfair to say that the Core Duo processor is x times better than the G5 based on a comparison of the latest Intel iMac and a 10 month old G5 iMac with slower memory, lesser video, etc.

The anandtech article is by far the best analysis that I have seen. It clearly acknowledges all of the difference in the systems rather than simply say that the Intel processor is better as other reviews have done. The anandtech benchmarks show that that G5 outperforms the Core Duo in various areas such as branch prediction, flops, etc. In other tests, the processors virtually tie.

Although the Core Duo obviously has a lot of potential and the upcoming Merom processors promise to be even better, the G5 is definitely not as far behind as Steve Jobs and others have suggested. The 1.9Ghz G5 used in these tests is not the best G5 that IBM has to offer. If Apple had chosen to build a new iMac with the latest G5 with a little more cache, the new Radeon GPU, the faster RAM, etc then who knows.

Anyway, Apple is going Intel and the future looks good...or at least it will Apple, Adobe, etc come out with their Universal Binaries.

apple used to have an educational component to its store that offered such discounts. you may want to see if it's still around

I'm not too suprised that Apple isn't bundling AppleWorks with the iMacs.

Dropping Appleworks is not new. My iMac G5 (iSight) came without AppleWorks.

The iMac G5 with iSight includes AppleWorks. If for some reason it is not installed on yours, you can install it from the system disk that came with your iMac.

Sales suck, platform is changing (again), the software with those machines will be obsolete this year (again) Why would you buy one? They would have to be at least half off and I still wouldn't buy one. It doesn't make economic sense.

This is another person that hit the nail square on the head, especially with the half off part. I LOVE Apple, but I could not buy the PPC versions of the iMac or even the PowerBook for that matter and still go to sleep at night. Like I said earlier in this thread, it is now all about Intel from now on.

Or (I'm going to get drilled for this) Apple contracts with Microsoft for a Mac version of MS Works 8.

I with you on this. It makes a lot of sense. But it would seriously cut into the sales of iWorks. My feeling is that iLife comes with all mac purchases so should iWork. The synergy makes sense.

The apple store is down

Been down for over 1.5 hours, just came back.

5 new 3rd party accessories. MacBook Pro still says "shipping: FEBRUARY".

This is pretty remarkable. This is the first time I recall where Apple waited so long to decreased the price of hardware even though newer systems were out. This shows that Apple is now selling to new people more often who are not informed about the value of the new systems.

Or does it show that Apple are selling to businesses and academia more, where standardizing on a few models and knowledge of failure scenarios matters more than having the latest and fastest kit?

...and they updated the price of the 20" iMac G5 to £1049 (was £1199) to now match the US price changes.

and comparing two exactly the same, iMac G5 20" models:

US$1399 (Apple US Edu) - (GBP £787)

or

GBP £985 (Apple UK Edu)

now there's a clear £200 difference there. that's not good! in fact, that's really making me angry. i know a lot of people that'd jump at one for £787, but can't afford it otherwise.

No surprise here...
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2006/01/23/intel_macs_25pc_faster/

Single core Intel barely faster than the G5... Even with the faster video card, RAM and 65nm fabrication process...

Yeah Apple should have stuck with PowerPC and not waste development time on X86

They turned OFF a core!! Who is going to do that when running daily tasks? The bottom line is they would have never been able to put a dual G5 in an imac or a powerbook. So who cares that one intel core is slower than a single G5 if the intel chips are duo cores?!?!

I agree with a few other posters who have said that iWork is not a good replacement for AppleWorks, at least at this point.

As far as a database, OS X already includes SQLite3, which is pretty effective as a command-line database. An access-like front-end for that should be pretty easy to create – there's really no excuse.

A spreadsheet would a little more difficult, but if Apple could manage to create something like a cleaned-up version of Mesa (The only currently available Cocoa spreadsheet), that would do. Of course, it's nothing flashy or spectacular, so knowing Apple, it's unlikely.

it shows what a Core Solo might do

You are right, nobody would normally run an iMacIntel with only one core.

But, people wonder about what a "Core Solo" would do in an iBookIntel or a MiniMacIntel.

Turning off one core of a Duo in an iMac is the best way to answer that question today.

So the "solo" stats aren't for the people who are looking at the iMacIntel today - the stats are for the rumourmongers thinking about the next Apple consumer systems....

But does it really matter if the core solo is a little bit slower than a single G5. It is not like the mac mini or ibook would have received a G5 update. I think the core solo should be compared to the G4, that is what it is replacing, right?
