Just had an appt with my cardiologist and was showing her the apps. It was all new to her. It would great if they publish in the medical journals and get wider interest and acceptance. I am participating in both studies. Looking forward to Series 4, didn’t think the Apple Watch would be something I upgraded regularly lol

Well that’s a bummer, I was waiting for the new watch to come out this fall to replace my original Apple Watch, was looking forward to entering this as I’ve got afib.

It's interesting. Google collects way more personal data than Apple could dream of in most areas, but Apple collects health and physical activity data that Google could only dream of. They have an unmatched advantage in that field.

But, somehow it thinks that I'm female... No idea why, and apparently no way to fix it.

It’s frustrating that when you restore your phone you lose this. It should only need to reconnect you to your existing study. Instead it thinks you’re an entire new request. And now that it’s closed doors. SoL.

I have the study going on three different iPhones. I managed this by restoring my 6S+ backup onto my 7+ and 8+. Now, no matter what phone I use to pair my watches with, it continues the study on that phone. Since my backup restored everything identical to the 6S+ the Apple study app uses the same email address so the number of contributions stay the same on all three phones. I have 6 watches so there are times I have a watch paired to all three phones.

My backups are encrypted so maybe that is why I was able to restore the Apple study to all the phones. Screencap shows my 7+ and 8+ with the app showing the current stats and start date. The stats are just a bit different because I wore the watch with my 8+ today so they haven't quite synced up yet to show the same stats.

Yes, that's very interesting. I am not surprised why several European countries do not allow a close integration of Android devices in their healthcare systems. I wouldn't trust a data hooker with data either. She'll sell them right on down the street. iOS, on the other hand, is authorized in healthcare here.

I wish Apple continued wisdom in expanding this area. There are an infinite number of uncultivated fields.

Man you must be a lot more active than me. Or maybe you’re dying.

Mine thinks I’m a female though, I guess I entered it wrong when signing up. I called Apple about it when I noticed months ago and they said there was nothing they could do about it.
I just saw mine says I'm female and called the hotline for support to ask - sounds like its a known bug that it's flipping genders both ways and should be resolved by the next app update.

The article states "I called them." Does anyone know what number he called?
My guess: (844) 606-1609 from the study website

They generally announce a new study during the new iPhone keynote. Likely closing this one out in preparation for the next to be announced in September.

Stuff like this could be really helpful. Though I wonder if when I watched Infinity War would've messed up my results if I were part of the study.

They generally standardize the data. So spikes from specific events don't cause issues. A single movie wouldn't mess up your data, or a friend jumping out and scaring you. Now, if you watched the same movie every day at the same time and had the same spikes during those times (like regular exercise each day at the same time) then it would be part of the greater data collection. But singular spikes don't cause issue and are managed for.

I wonder if apple would consider adding Heart Rate Variability (HRV) detection in future apple watches. It's actually a better indicator of heart health than HR is.

That’s if you do a backup/restore. Restoring the phone ‘as new’ wipes it from the study, apparently. I get “as a new phone” but it should be looking at the AppleID (user) not just the phone. Which in my case is still the same phone, even! Meh!

Thank you!!!

809 contributions in 235 days. I've been in since the beginning but will probably be out if I get a new phone this fall. If you have to sign up as new I imagine they will lose a lot of participants prior to the stop date.

371 contributions in 89 days. I have routine arrhythmia that is not detected by the study (because it is not A Fib). I have no idea if that has any effect on the rate of contributions or not. Not sure if the app even picks up on it, maybe it just ignores things it does not recognize.

I'm also one that the app alerted for an abnormal rhythm - afib. First bout of it that I have had, that I know of. Since then I rarely take the watch off.
I would like to clarify a few things that were stated in that quote. First, the "doctor" that contacts you (not sure if it is a doctor) makes it clear that you need to see your own doctor. They are not calling to diagnose. I also wore a heart patch they sent (not really state of the art - a common thing for heart patients to wear); they want to see if there is another episode in that record, and how it correlates to watch data. While they do send you the records at the end, they again made it clear that they were not providing a diagnosis and to share the records with your own doctor (who was happy to have them).
I think this is a great alert device, and my doctor certainly agreed. However, I wouldn't put too much faith in the staff conducting the study to serve as your proxy physician as that quote implied. But if you are of that age or of risk, the watch certainly can bring a little piece of mind.

Mine is much more inline with yours than with BigMcGuire's. Crazy.

I wonder if it closed because they needed additional hardware requirements. It could be the case they were comfortable with the results, but I suspect they had too many false positives, or need more accurate measures this study might open up to people with the Apple watch 4, which is rumoured to have updated heart detection.

Either way, Apple watch 4 will be exciting :). The most amazing thing would be if they opened it up to andriod, and opened the Apple watch eco system to the most widely used plateform in the world!

I'm dreaming, but still would be cool
