Nope, we just need vendors sticking to the standard USB-PD charging profiles instead of coming up with these stupid custom ones.
If custom is supported under the USB-PD standard, it’s standard by definition. But I don’t see any indication that these are non-standard configurations...

the whole USB (3, 3.1, 3.2, 4 etc) and USB PD (I don't even know the different levels) are completely screwed up, and if you don't understand the details, you get hosed ... and the vendors (incl Apple) do not communicate clearly either.
it's a mess

What a **** show of a product.
Seems a bit harsh since most of the people here that bought one like it (anecdotal, I know). Yeah it’s overpriced and really should have come with a charging adapter, but it’s kind of a self selecting item, wherein if you think it’s worth over paying for then you don’t mind the caveats it comes with.
However, lack of clarity from Apple on adapter specs could have been so easily mitigated if they had just ponied up the paltry sum it costs them to make a 20W adapter and included it in the box.

Apple today shared a new support document explaining how to use the new MagSafe Duo Charger with iPhone 12 models and the Apple Watch, clarifying some details about the accessory following its release earlier this month.

Notably, the support document confirms that Apple's older 29W USB-C power adapter is not compatible with the MagSafe Duo, presumably because that adapter does not support the necessary 5V/3A or 9V/1.67A power ratings. As a result, when the MagSafe Duo is connected to the 29W adapter, it can only charge either an iPhone or Apple Watch, rather than both devices simultaneously.

Apple discontinued the 29W adapter in 2018, replacing it with a 30W version that is fully compatible with the MagSafe Duo.

The support document also notes that the MagSafe Duo's hinge area might wrinkle over time if kept in the folded, closed position, especially if the charger is left in a very hot environment, such as inside of a car on a hot day:As with the singular MagSafe Charger, the MagSafe Duo is limited to up to 12W of power delivery when used with the iPhone 12 mini. And when Lightning accessories such as Apple's EarPods are connected to any iPhone 12 model, charging with the MagSafe Duo is limited to 7.5W to comply with regulatory standards.

The rest of the document reiterates many details that Apple already shared about MagSafe charging, and is worth a glance for new MagSafe Duo owners.

The 29w dont work with the HomePod Mini either...just get an orange flashing light. I read about a specification change when they went to 30w so I assume that is the same reason why these dont work either.
I thought I was nuts. Used a Google 45W and it worked great. I guess we can toss the 29W adapter?

I get that some people may like it, but MagSafe to me will go down as one of the most useless products Apple has ever invented. Literally replacing a wire with a different wire and calling it "WIRELESS." Ridiculous.

I tried to use the 12W charging brick that came with my older iPad pro, with the older USB cable, and it didn't work at all. No charge to anything. On the plus side, the USB-C charger that came with my Macbook works just fine, so at least i didn't need to buy a 30W charger. Shoulda come with one though.

4-year old power adapter is incompatible. I do wonder why did they have to release 29W and not full 30W, that would have been compatible. They are really promoting use-and-throw mindset across the world.

I love Apple products to no end but this one confounds me. It looks like a nifty charger. But. It's. A. Charger. It shouldn't be a penny over 39.99. Ok... maybe 59.99 with the Apple tax, but 129 is actually pretty hilarious.

I won't knock anyone for buying it, as people I'm sure have thought my buying the $129 leather iPad sleeve was the height of hilarity and waste, but at the time it made sense to me and I'm still using that sleeve almost 4 years later. I just wonder how long until these are obsoleted by MagSafe 2 phones in 2 years or something...

It’s amazing that a charger doesn’t come with... gasp... a charger😂 Should be $129 for everything
$99 for everything and I might barely consider it. It's some cheap plastic wrapped magsafe charging + watch charging pad. Nothing else! The fact it's >$200 ($129 + $49 for the 30W charger + tax) is beyond ridiculous.

Then again they sell $550+ headphones and $1000+ monitor stands.

So Tim Cook thinks we're all idiots anyway

What a mess. And to top it off they made it out of that god-awful soft-touch rubberish material like the iPad keyboard folio.
